Binge-watching – why we do it and how to do it right

Picture this.

It’s the weekend, the kids are in bed and you’re curled up on a big comfy sofa.  You’ve got a super soft blanket wrapped round you, a big mug of coffee in your hand (or a big glass of wine depending on how long a week it’s been!) and a pile of snacks within arm’s reach.  In front of you is a beautifully sleek Panasonic HDR 4k tv, perfect to transport you away to whatever fictional place takes your fancy.

If you’re after a bit of fantasy escapism then you might head to the seven kingdoms, or if it’s comfort you’re after then maybe you’ll choose Stars Hollow.  Wherever you decide to go, chances are you’ll be there for more than one episode!

Why is that though?  What is it that makes binge watching shows so appealing?

Binge watching

I can still remember the first time I really binge-watched a tv series.

It was before we had the children, and were still living in a little one bed flat in town.  We used to watch CSI every week, and then after a while we splashed out on the dvd of the first series.  We put it on, only meaning to watch one or two episodes.  But we just kept watching.  Before we knew it, hours had passed and we had watched what’s probably an unhealthy amount of episodes.

It was just too easy to keep watching, as each episode started playing automatically after the previous one finished.

Since then I’ve binge watched loads of different series.  When I was breastfeeding Nerys I watched so much tv, I used to watch things during night feeds as well as during the day when she fed.

More recently I watched Game of Thrones in its entirety in an alarmingly short amount of time.

So what exactly is behind this?  Why are so many of us unable to stop watching after just one episode?

There are several reasons that I can think of.

  • It’s just so easy

I honestly think this is a big reason why I watch more than one episode at a time of my favourite programmes.  I watch a lot of things on Netflix, and it’s all too easy to just keep watching when the next episode autoplays before the credits have finished rolling on the episode before!

  • We don’t want to be left behind

When everyone else is all caught up with the latest must-watch programme, we want to be too.  It’s as simple as that, we don’t want to be left out of conversations.  I know for me personally, I started watching Game of Thrones from the start so that I was up to speed with it when season six aired.  After resisting watching it for so long, I finally gave in and decided I would give it a go, but I didn’t want to be seeing spoilers all the time, so felt I needed to catch up and then watch the new episodes as soon as I could.

  • It makes us feel good

Watching tv is, generally, a relaxing and enjoyable pastime.  A study by Harris Interactive found that three-quarters of the people they asked who regularly binge-watched shows on Netflix, had positive feelings about doing so.  Studies have found that when we’re really drawn into a tv programme we show a lot of empathy towards the characters.  This then causes us to produce more oxytocin, the cuddle hormone, which makes us feel good.  So, of course, we want to keep watching more to keep feeling good!

  • The writing has adapted to get us to keep watching

Now this is interesting.  The way programmes are written has changed to make us more likely to watch more than one episode at a time.  Think back to the days before on-demand tv.  When you had to wait a whole week between episodes of Friends.  Each episode worked as a stand-alone piece.  Yes, there were longer running story arcs, and occasional cliff-hangers, but most episodes were pretty self-contained.  Now though, the writers are going for much more detailed story arcs, and creating worlds that we want to immerse ourselves in.  You can’t just dip in and watch a single episode of these programmes the same way you could with Friends.  I’ve not seen Breaking Bad, and I know if I tried to watch an episode from partway through the series I wouldn’t have a clue what was going on!

  • It gives us somewhere to escape to

If you’ve had a really busy day and are feeling stressed out and worn out, watching 2 or 3 episodes of your favourite show back to back lets you really get engrossed in it and forget your own bad day.  Cultural anthropologist Grant McCracken carried out some research on behalf of Netflix and found that 8 out of 10 viewers felt that binge-watching something was more enjoyable that just watching one episode.  His conclusion was that our non-stop lifestyles aren’t leading us to want to zone out to mindless tv, instead we’re drawn to these shows that tell in-depth stories and create alternative worlds for us to lose ourselves in.

So now we know why we do it, what’s the right way to binge watch something?

Well firstly, you want to make the experience as enjoyable as possible, so try and create a great environment to watch it like I described at the start of this post.

Choose something to watch based on the mood you’re in, or the mood you want to be in.  If I want to really get engrossed in something for a bit then I’ll go for a programme like Game of Thrones or Prison Break.  If I’m feeling a bit low and in need of some warm and fuzzies then I’ll put Gilmore Girls on.  And if I’m a bit fried then something easy to watch is in order, like How I met your mother or Charmed.

On a more serious note, take a minute to think about why you might be binge watching.  If it’s just that you’ve had a long week and want to get lost in something for a few hours then I don’t see the harm.  If, on the other hand, you’re using it as a way of procrastinating or of trying to forget something that’s hanging over your head and stressing you out, then that’s not so good.  Your worries and your to-do list will still be there when you step away from the tv.

So maybe crack on with that niggling job that needs doing.  Get those things ticked off your to-do list.

And then you can really relax and properly enjoy your binge watching session.

Do you prefer to watch just one episode of your favourite programme?  Or do you find it really hard to stop after just one?!  What’s your current tv obsession?

The siblings project – April 2017

After writing in last month’s siblings post that it really wasn’t feeling like Spring yet, things have definitely turned more Spring-like in Swansea!

We’ve had some gorgeous days with blue skies and sunshine.  Which has meant that we’ve been able to get out and about a bit more.

So this month’s photos are from two different days.

The first few are from a week or so ago when we went for a little walk on the beach, and then went the long way round the Guildhall to get back to Victoria park for a quick play on the swings.

Following on from being so organised with my family photo for last month’s me and mine project, I took the opportunity to get some photos of Rhys and Nerys together, knowing that I would be writing this post soon!

Siblings project April

You can tell that these photos were taken towards the end of term, because both Rhys and Nerys look so blooming tired!

I love how their personalities show through in this.  Rhys is still performing, still busy, still lively even though he just needs a rest!  Nerys on the other hand, is a bit more like me I think, and is giving in to her tiredness a little bit more.

The next set of photos were taken last weekend, at the start of the Easter holidays and I think you can see a change in the children already!  Knowing they’ve got a break from school, they have both just seemed to relax a bit.  The sunshine has helped as well though I think.

The Easter holidays mark the end of Nerys’ first half term of doing half days at school.  And it’s been really lovely seeing how well she’s settled in there.

What’s especially nice though is when I pick both her and Rhys up at the end of the day and they excitedly tell me that they saw each other in the yard at playtime.  Or ‘the ard’ as Nerys calls it.  No idea why, but I don’t think she’s ever said it with the Y at the start.  Anyway, it’s just lovely to hear that they’re so happy to see each other like that!

These two are typical siblings.

They know how to wind each other up, and sometimes seem to go out of their way to do so.  But then, at the end of the day I’ll hear them in their bunkbeds, chatting away about Pokemon, or playing Doc Mcstuffins.

And it makes my heart so happy.

why are dreams suddenly vivid

Why are my dreams suddenly so vivid?

I love dreams.  I find them fascinating, and really enjoy trying to work out what various elements of my dreams could be linked to in my waking life.

Over the last week or two though, my dreams have become particularly vivid.  Nothing especially interesting happens in them, but they are just so real.  In particular the emotions I feel in the dreams are so powerful.

I felt really quite low one day last week, after waking from a dream where I just felt down and unmotivated.  The whole dream was so vivid, and I felt the emotions so strongly, it just stuck with me all day.

And I just feel that there has to be a reason why, all of sudden, my dreams are like this.

Why are my dreams suddenly so vivid-

We can rule one thing out straight away.  I’m not pregnant!  Pregnancy can do very weird things to your dreams, I had some very strange dreams during both of my pregnancies, but that’s definitely not a factor for me right now.

So what is behind my suddenly vivid dreams?

Netflix binges.

It could be as simple as the fact that I can often be found lying in bed with the ipad next to me, watching Netflix as I fall asleep.  Now we all know that the things we experience in our day to day life can crop up in our dreams.  so it makes sense that falling asleep while watching a particular program can mean that elements of what we watched appear in our dreams.

What’s interesting though is that we can take elements that resonate emotionally with us, even on a subconscious level, and incorporate that into our dreams.

Stress and anxiety.

I think this is more likely to be one of the reasons behind my suddenly vivid dreams.  I’ve definitely been feeling quite anxious and stressed lately, and it’s thought that we work through feelings like these during REM sleep.  So my vivid dreams could just be my subconsious mind trying to process and deal with these feelings of anxiety.

Lack of sleep.

Now that might sound odd to start with, but hear me out.  After a few nights of poor sleep, or not enough sleep, we tend to sort of ‘make up’ for it when we do have a full night’s sleep, by having more intense bouts of REM sleep.  And more intense REM sleep equals more intense, and vivid, dreams.

I think a combination of anxiety and a run of bad nights are the culprits in my case.

Which is quite good to know, but also a little scary how much a few nights of bad sleep can affect the sleep you then get when you have a good night!

For the record, some other things that can make dreams really vivid all of a sudden are eating spicy foods too close to bedtime, coming off medications like antidepressants, and having sleep apnea.  Generally what it comes down to is things messing with our REM sleep and, one way or another, making it more intense.

Pretty fascinating if you ask me!

Living arrows 2017 – 15/52

We’ve had a glorious weekend of sunshine this weekend.

And this little one has spent a good chunk of her time out in the garden, helping Daddy clear out the flower beds and pull out the weeds.  Last year our friends picked out a gorgeous little gardening set for her, as part of our review of the Wicked Uncle website, and Nerys couldn’t wait to get it back out of the cupboard and get to work!

living arrows 15

She was as happy as anything out there, digging in the soil and filling up the garden waste bags for Daddy.

We did joke though, that she looked like a little old lady in her sun hat and spotty gardening gloves.  But seriously, how cute are her spotty gardening gloves?!

She is such a little character now too, and has a brilliant sense of humour that catches me off guard some days.  I have a feeling this one will keep us on our toes as she gets older!

The garden is looking so much better already after all their hard work this weekend, but there’s still a fair bit to do which I think Nerys will be quite pleased to hear.  We used to have raspberry plants at the top of the garden but they have all but disappeared now.  So I’m going to do a bit of reading to see what we can plant there instead, hopefully we’re not too late to start planting things!

Do you grow things to eat in your garden?  What would you recommend we try?

For the longest time Rhys was obsessed with Angry Birds.

He loved playing all the different versions of the game on whatever device he could get his hands on.  He’s got books about them, has seen the film quite a few times, and has a rather impressive collection of Angry Birds soft toys.

But then, a little while ago, he seemed to move on a bit.  He discovered Minecraft and Pokemon, and the Angry Birds got sidelined a little bit.

This past week though, he seems to have remembered how much he loves them!

He’s been playing his own live action game of Angry Birds epic.  He’ll spend ages finding things from around the house that can act as helmets and shields for his birds.  Then he’ll act out battles with them, moving them around the house to different levels of the game.

It’s fascinating to watch him play in that way, with that much imagination.

Living arrows

At the weekend we actually had nice enough weather for him to be able to move his game outside to the garden, which he absolutely loved.

Our garden is a little on the wild side, which I would imagine makes it quite fun for children.  He definitely enjoyed clambering around the place and setting up his little action scenes with his toys.

It really was nice to be able to be out in the garden with the sun out (even though there were still dark clouds threatening to make their way over to us!).  With the clock change it meant the children could play out there quite late into the afternoon, something I think they’ll be wanting to do a lot now that Spring is here.  I can see a trip to the shops being on the cards soon, to pick up a new sandpit.  The one we had last year really hasn’t survived the winter!

a month of photos

A month of photos 2017 (#ShowYouWereThere)

So that’s it.  We’ve reached the end of March, which means I’ve reached the end of my month-long challenge to get in a photo everyday.  I started the project in 2015, and then did it again last year.  Each time pushing myself to be in a photo every day for the whole month.

I chose March mainly because that’s when Mother’s day is, and this seems like a nice way to celebrate that.  Making sure I exist in photos for my children.

I’m really pleased that I’ve managed to do it again for a third year, and that there’s quite a nice bit of variety in the photos that I got this time round.

So here we go, prepare yourself for a whole bunch of photos of me:

a month of photos 1

a month of photos 2

a month of photos 3

Every time I do this challenge, I find that is just that, a challenge.

Some days I really struggle with it, trying to find different photos to take, when our daily routine is pretty much the same day after day.  I want to keep things interesting, and not just take the same selfie over and over again.  And honestly, it can be hard work at times to find a new way to get in a photo, or an interesting moment to capture.

Looking back at the photos I’ve got from this month though, I’m really pleased that I pushed through.

It’s interesting though, how different these photos are from the ones I took back in 2015.  That first year the photos were much more ‘real’ I think.  Most days I set the camera up somewhere, started the timer then just jumped in to the scene and captured a real moment.  This year, there are some like that but also a lot more posed portraits and detail shots.  I think I like the mix I have this year, but maybe next year I’ll try and get a few more of those documentary style photos again.

#ShowYouWereThere

Now that March is over, I won’t be pushing myself to get in a photo every single day any more, but I will be aiming to do it at least once a week.  I’ve finally properly started a little instagram community aimed at getting more parents to be in more photos.  And I’m really thrilled that it is slowly starting to pick up.

People have been beginning to use #ShowYouWereThere on their photos and I’ve been featuring my 4 favourites from each week in a round up post here on the blog.

Going forward, I want to make sure I have a photo with me in it to share in my round up post too.  It means so much to me that my husband and I both exist in photos for our children.

Will you join me?

Push yourself to get in more photos with, and for, your loved ones and then share them with me on instagram using #ShowYouWereThere!

Blogs I’ve loved this month – March 2017

At the end of February I shared a few blog posts that I loved reading that month.  One of the things I love about blogging is how supportive the community is, and so I want to carry on showing my support for the amazing bloggers out there by sharing the posts that I particularly enjoy reading each month.

So, here are a few of the blogs I’ve loved in March:

Blogs I've loved this month

The six words every Mother needs to hear

This lovely post from Mummy Wales really resonated with me.  In it she talks about those early days of parenting, when everything is overwhelming and exhausting, and how 6 magic words can help get you through it.  And how those same words can help you through all the other times as your babies get older, that feel so tough when you’re right in the middle of it.

Head over and take a read of the post to find out what these magic words are!

Confessions of a third time mum

This post from Confessions of a crummy mummy really made me smile.  We would love to have a third child, and this post gave me an insight to the chaos we could expect if we go for it!  If there are any parents out there feeling far from perfect, then go and have a read, it’s a brilliantly honest post that will make you feel much better about not having it all together.  I mean honestly, does anyone really have it all together all the time?!

DIY yarn Easter eggs

I love a good craft activity, and so do Rhys and Nerys.  This idea for making eggs from wrapping balloons in yarn is one I’ve seen a few times in the past, but it’s always seemed a bit tricky for me to do with the children.  This post from Mudpie Fridays makes it look do-able though!  And the end result looks fab too.  I think we might give this a go in the Easter holidays.

5 mistakes I made in my first year of blogging

I love reading posts like this, and getting to learn from other people’s experiences.  I read this one from Mum in Brum this month and found myself nodding along to all of the points she made.  There is so much to learn when you start blogging, I think a lot of us make these same ‘mistakes’ in the beginning.  It’s funny though, I think working through these things was the best way for me to learn!

Things ten years of motherhood have taught me

When you have young children it’s easy to get just really caught up in that stage of parenting.  And so I really enjoy reading blogs from parents of older children, to get a bit of insight about what I can expect in the future and gain some perspective on these early years.  This post from wellies on the school run was a really great read about the things she’s learned from ten years of motherhood.  Go and have a read, it’s just lovely and comforting and sort of bitter sweet and is what parenting is all about.

So there we have it.

Hope you find something new in there to read and maybe some new bloggers to check out!
