Me and mine – March 2017

I did it, I finally did it!

After writing last month about how annoyed I get with myself for leaving taking our family photo until the last minute, I made a point this month of taking one when we had the chance.

We were at Brynmill park, just a standard weekend trip out for a scoot around and a breath of fresh air.  It was dry, the sun was even out.

So we set the camera up on a wall and took a quick family photo.

me and mine

I’m so happy we did it!

And I really love that this month’s photo is from the park, because it feels like March has been all about the park!  We’ve not really been to the beach at all this month, choosing instead to pop the scooters in the boot of the car and head to Brynmill park.

I’ve felt really proud watching the children scoot around.  Nerys has got such confidence on her scooter, it’s brilliant.  And Rhys has just tried so hard with his, he’s really perservered with learning how to balance on it and pick up some speed.

The thing that makes me smile about this photo though, is that Steve and I both said afterwards that we didn’t feel self-conscious taking it.  In the past I’ve felt really quite shy about setting the camera up in public and posing for pictures.  I’m not sure why, because so many people do it!  But this month we just went for it, and you know what?  No one batted an eyelid.  Shows how much of our worries are just in our heads!

Now, having moved past that concern, and broken the cycle of leaving family photos until the last minute, what are the chances I can be this organised again in April?  And I wonder if maybe we’ll get a shot of us outside without winter coats and hats on!

The Me and Mine Project
Every day of your life is a special occasion

Every day is a special occasion

Back when I was a teenager, a boy gave me some chocolate truffles.

It was Valentine’s day, and he left them at our front door.  It was the first time anyone had ever given me a valentine’s present.  And they were the posh truffles too, so it was extra special.

So I put them to one side.

I felt they deserved to be savoured so I waited until the perfect time to eat them.  The thing is, I waited too long.  By the time I went to eat them they were way past their best.

The memory of it still makes me sad.  That disappointment that the thing I had held off enjoying was ruined.  I was so irritated with myself for not just eating them straight away and enjoying them in that moment.

Yet, I still find myself doing it now.  I wait for the perfect moment for things.  I save things for ‘special occasions’.

And it really bothers me!

I’m working on it though.  I’m trying to make this quote one of my mottos:

“Don’t save something for a special occasion. Every day of your life is a special occasion”

“Don’t save something for a special occasion.  Every day of your life is a special occasion”

Not every day is perfect.

Some days are utterly miserable.

But still, I do think we can always find something in each day to celebrate and be grateful for.  And so maybe we should crack open that bottle of wine that’s sitting in the fridge.  Maybe we should wear our ‘special’ jewellery on the school run.

I was handed a box of rather posh looking chocolates this Mother’s day, and there’s no way they’re being left to go bad!

Living arrows 2017 – 13/52

Do you ever have those times when you look at your child and realise they’ve suddenly grown a few inches?!

We had that recently with Rhys.  One day I realised that his school trousers had become ankle-swingers, seemingly overnight.

He really is growing up, this boy.

He’s realising that there is a whole world out there that he can learn about and he is soaking up all the knowledge he can.

He’s been reading about the solar system, and every now and then he’ll excitedly tell me about one of the planets.  He’s just like his dad, storing information away.  His memory is way better than mine!

He’s getting bolder too.  We had another chat the other day about not giving up.  About how some things can be really hard when you first try them, but the important thing is to keep on trying.

living arrows 13

This photo sort of represents that to me.

He was working his way across the climbing wall at the park, and was so determined to do it, even though it was hard.

Even though he fell off several times, he just got back up and tried again.

Those little things, they make you rather proud don’t they!

Liked and loved – March 2017

Another month almost done, how is it almost April already?

I’m really enjoying writing these posts at the end of each month, taking some time to think about the good things that have been going on.  I’m quite looking forward to reading them all at the end of the year and being reminded of everything.

So, on to this month’s list; here are the things I’ve liked and loved in March.

Trips to the park.

It may not be the most exciting of activities, but after weeks and weeks of illness and rainy weather I’ve really loved taking Rhys and Nerys out to the local park this month.  They’ve whizzed around on their scooters, fed the ducks and swung way up high on the swings!

Sometimes those simple things really are the best aren’t they?

Using my new straighteners.

I was sent some Lee Stafford straighteners to review a few weeks ago, and I’m really loving using them.  I’ve gone a long time without really doing anything to my hair, other than dying it every other month.  But recently I’ve felt like making a bit more of an effort, so these straighteners have come in really handy.

There’s a full review of them here and at the bottom of that post you can enter to win some if you like the look of them!

Cutting my hair.

Sticking with the same theme, I really quite like my new hair cut!  After straightening my hair for the first time in months, I realised quite how dry and unhealthy the ends of my hair were.  So I chopped them off!

I took a good few inches off in the end, and really love how much healthier it feels.  Now I just need to get some heat protection spray to keep it healthy if I’m going to be straightening it regularly.

Working on my #ShowYouWereThere project.

This is the 3rd year I’ve set myself the challenge of getting in a photo every single day in March, and I think it’s something I’ll keep doing for years to come.  It is hard some days, but I absolutely love the end result.

This year though, is the first year that I’ve worked to spread the idea a bit more.  I’ve started an instagram community using #ShowYouWereThere, which is meant to encourage more parents to get in more photos.  And I’m thrilled that people are starting to join in!

I’m also starting a guest post series on the blog with the same theme.  I’ll be sharing people’s stories of their favourite photos of themselves, or the photo of a loved one that they’re really grateful/happy to have.  If you want some more information on taking part please do email me at thisgloriouslife@gmail.com.

Spending time on my photography business.

I’ve put so much time and energy into this blog over the last year that my photography business, Madeline Littlejohns Photography, has been rather neglected.  I moved my website over to wordpress from weebly a while ago but it still needs a lot of work.

But I’ve taken the little hiatus to really think about where I want to go with it.  What sort of photos do I want to take, what sort of clients do I want to work with.  And it’s been really quite exciting.  I’m still not quite there yet, but I’m much closer to what feels right for me.

I love seeing photos of newborns all posed and styled, but that’s just not what I’m personally after.

What I want to capture is people’s stories.  Those natural moments that occur between people who love each other.

My tagline over there is ‘Your life.  Your love.  Your story’ and I’m still really happy with it.

I want to help people tell their stories through the photos I take.  Starting with families, and then I would really love to start working with creative small business owners, bloggers, crafters and the like.  It would be so much fun to work with them on headshots and behind the scenes photos for their websites.  I have big plans for it!

So there we have it.

That was March.

And I’m feeling quite fired up for April now, lots to be getting on with!

bakerdays cake review

I live quite far away from my family, which can make it pretty tricky when it comes to buying presents that I can send in the post for birthdays and special occasions.  So I am always on the lookout for websites that sell fun and interesting presents that I can order to be delivered straight to them.

I was intrigued then, when I came across bakerdays.

bakerdays review featured image

They sell cakes that you can personalise and order online, to then be delivered straight to your loved one’s door.  Who wouldn’t be happy with a cake arriving at their front door!

There is a huge choice of cakes available on their website, for all occasions from birthdays and christenings to graduations and mother’s day.  The hardest part of ordering is chosing which design you would like.

Most of the cakes are sent by courier, but if you order one of the letter box cakes then it will be sent via Royal Mail because, surprise surprise, it fits through letter boxes.

I was recently asked if I would like to try one of these letter box cakes and I said yes please straight away.  Well, I do love a good piece of cake.

And I have to say, I’ve not been disappointed.

The cake arrived in a really sturdy cardboard box, that did indeed fit nicely through our letterbox.  I was really impressed with how well it was packaged, it felt very secure and the cake was kept in perfect condition.

When I opened the box I found a lovely little tin that was the perfect size to keep the cake from shifting around in transit.

And it’s really quite funky too, I know I’ll be using it to store bits and bobs in the house.

bakerdays review cake tin

There are handy instructions for getting the cake out of the tin, so you don’t end up smooshing it in your eagerness to tuck in.

Once I’d got mine out of the tin and out of its wrapper I was able to really get a good look at it.  I’d chosen a cake just for me, a little early Mother’s day treat!  And I had it personalised with a photo of Rhys and Nerys.

I really like the way the cake looks.  The colours are lovely and bright and I think the photo I chose works really well with the design.  The photo itself is a bit blurry, but I’m not sure if that’s just the way it is with photo cakes.

bakerdays review size of hand

As you can see from the photo above, the cake is pretty small.  I can just about hold it in one hand.  So bear that in mind when you’re ordering, if you want to send a cake that can be shared between several people then you might want to go a size up.  But this letter box cake is perfect as a little treat, and will be enough for me to share with my husband and children.

bakerdays cake review

My cake came with a few extra bits that I wasn’t expecting – a party blower, 2 candles and 3 balloons.  I thought that was a nice little touch that adds a sense of celebration to the whole thing.

When you order a cake from bakerdays, first you chose the design you want and then you have to make the even trickier decision about what type of cake to send.

The options are: traditional sponge, rich chocolate chip, red velvet, gluten wheat free sponge, dairy free sponge and fruit cake.  There really is something for everyone.

I chose red velvet for my cake, because I can’t think that I’ve actually tried it before.

bakerdays cake red velvet review

I was really impressed with the quality of the cake when I tried it.

I think I was maybe expecting it to be a bit dry, but it really wasn’t.  It was beautifully moist, with a good  balance of cake and icing.  I had a small piece while I was home alone, purely for the purpose of writing this of course!  And now I’m really looking forward to having another bit tomorrow with my family.

I would be so happy if someone sent me another of these cakes in the post, and it’s definitely something I’m keeping in mind next time I want to send a little treat in the post to someone.

Bakerdays have a huge range of cakes available, head over to their website and take a look – www.bakerdays.com

You can also find them on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with their news.

Living arrows 2017 – 12/52

We were all set to head out for walk on the beach this Sunday, but woke up to another wet and windy day.

So we went for plan B.  The classic back-up plan of a trip to the local park, when the rain eased up a bit.

We met up with family friends who were in Swansea for the weekend, and it was really lovely.  Their children are almost the same ages as Rhys and Nerys, and while they don’t see each other very often they get on so well when we’re together.

This was Nerys on one end of the see saw, with one of the girls on the other end.

She had so much fun, especially as they were pretty evenly matched weight-wise, so they were able to work the see saw by themselves.  Another one of those little milestones I suppose, the first time they don’t need you to help them balance and push up and down!

Lee Stafford Academy Hair Straightener – Review and competition

Back in my twenties, before I got married and had my children, I used to go out to bars and clubs pretty much every weekend with my best friend.  I know, I can hardly imagine it now!  But we used to have such a good time together on these nights out.

Honestly though, quite often a lot of the fun was in the getting ready, and that always involved straightening our hair.

Now, my hair has always been pretty straight anyway, but I loved the sleekness you can only really get from using straighteners.  And there was just something about having shiny straight hair that made me feel ready for a night out!

Fast forward, ooh, about 13 years though, and those kinds of nights out just don’t really happen any more.  So I’ve not really done anything with my hair for a while.  Most of my ‘getting ready’ now is getting ready for the school run, and my hair is mainly, sadly, neglected in the rush to get out the front door.

The thing is though, lately I’ve been feeling like I want to make more of an effort.  I bought some new mascara recently and actually really like taking a few seconds in the morning to put it on, it makes me feel just that bit more together.  I’ve started fitting some exercise into my days, because I want to feel healthier and honestly, I want to lose a few pounds too.

So when I was offered the chance to review some new straighteners from Lee Stafford I jumped at the chance.  I really like the idea of taking just a little bit of time to ‘do’ my hair, rather than just letting it do its own thing every day!

After giving them a good try out, here are my thoughts on the Lee Stafford Academy straighteners.

lee stafford academy straighteners in box

I love how quickly they heat up.

Like I said, I don’t have much time to get ready in the mornings.  So the fact that these straighteners heat up, ready to use, in just 10 seconds is amazing.

There is a useful little guide in the box to help you choose what heat setting is best for your hair, from 80 degrees for thin, fine hair up to 230 degrees for really thick hair.  I’m somewhere in the middle so around 120 degrees is probably best for me.

Anyway, the fact that it heats up so quickly is a bit selling point to me.  No waiting around, you can just get straight on with it!

They look good.

Now, I know this shouldn’t really matter, but I’m trying to be honest here!  I really do like the way these straighteners look.

The box they come in is really nice in itself.  It’s lovely and sleek and black on the outside, and then you open it up and get this amazing bright pink on the inside.  There are little notes inside too, which add a bit of a personal touch, making them feel just a bit more special.

The straighteners inside are mainly black which is just classic and always a good look.  But they’re not just black, they’re matt black which really adds a little something.  And actually does make them easier to use, they’re a bit more grippy in your hand than ones I’ve used in the past.  And to add just a bit of fun to the design, there’s a little pop of that bright pink here and there too.

They don’t snag.

I’ve used straighteners in the past that have sort of snagged and pulled on my hair which is just really not pleasant.  These Lee Stafford Academy straighteners felt so smooth moving through my hair, thanks to the nano silver titanium plates.

They really do just glide through, with no catching or snagging, which makes using them a really quite pleasant experience.

They leave my hair really shiny!

I’ve always liked how my hair looks when it’s been straightened.  It’s always just looked and felt sleeker and shinier.  And these straighteners haven’t disappointed me on that front at all.  They generate negative ions, which apparently make your hair “frizz-free and manageable”.  I’m not sure on the science behind that, but it works for me!  My hair definitely looked really shiny after using them, and still feels smoother the next day.

The controls are on the inside.

Now, I had a bit of a baby brain moment when I first opened these.  I couldn’t find how to turn them on.  Then I took off the heat protection guard (which is fab, by the way) and opened the straighteners up.  Then I found the power button and the temperature controls.  They’re tucked away on the inside, so you can’t accidently whack the heat up as you’re using them.  Which, by the way, I used to do a lot with my old straighteners, it used to drive me mad!

There’s a 5 year warranty.

I didn’t realise this at first, but the Lee Stafford Academy straighteners come with a 5 year manufacturer’s warranty.  I don’t think you can complain about that!  That’s real peace of mind for me, to know that I’m covered if anything does go wrong with them in the next 5 years.

My overall thoughts.

Honestly, I’m really impressed with these.  They feel really lovely to use, heated up super fast which is important for me, and left my hair looking straight and shiny and feeling really nice to the touch too.

Here are my before and after photos.

lee stafford academy straighteners before and after

There might not seem to be a huge difference between the two, mainly because my hair is really quite straight to start with.  But it is so much shinier after using the straighteners, and feels really lovely too, which you can’t really tell from a photo!

I will definitely be adding these to my routine, maybe not every day, but a few times a week, to start to feel a bit more polished and put together.  And I’m hoping to master curling my hair with them too, youtube here I come, bring me your best tutorials!

Competition

If you’d like to win a pair of Lee Stafford Academy straighteners of your own, then here’s your chance!  There are 11 different ways you can enter, so get clicking and good luck.  The competition closes on the 29th March so hurry!
