Right place, right time

Around this time every year I find myself thinking about the summer of 2003.  I had just graduated from Swansea Uni and me and my best friend had decided to stay here for a year, see what jobs we could find and generally see what the next year brought us.

Finding ourselves in quite urgent need of work, we both headed to the temp agencies in town and signed up.  The first job that came up was a temp job with Lloyds bank.  They were taking on a ton of young people to process all the applications for student bank accounts that were coming in over the summer, and we were among the lucky ones selected to be part of the fun!

The job actually wasn’t that bad, and we met a great group of people that really helped ease us into life outside of University.  And among that group of people, who I met on my very first day in that job, was my future husband.

It took about 3 months, my break-up with my uni boyfriend (his doing, not mine, and by text by the way, very classy!) and talk of me and Jo moving to London for Steve and I to start going out.  A few months after that we were living together.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

I really do believe that things happen for a reason, and that people come into our lives at the right moment.  It never crossed my mind when I walked into that temp job 12 years ago that I would meet my future husband that day.  That the man I would have children with, and spend my life with, would be in that room.  That my whole life would never be the same.

But I tell you what, I’m damn glad I took that job!

Have you had a moment in your life where you’ve ended up at the right place, at the right time?  I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Someone still needs a nap every day (Wicked Wednesdays)

I looked after my friend’s two kids yesterday, which meant my house was that little bit busier and louder than normal.  So Nerys didn’t have a nap at around midday like she normally would.  I naively thought she might be able to last till bedtime, but about 2 minutes after sitting down with her dinner she just lay down on the living room floor and went to sleep.

So apparently she really does still need a nap every day!

Never stop being silly

Rhys was playing the other day, being noisy, generally just being 4, and, because I was trying to concentrate on something else and getting wound up by the noise, I told him to stop being silly.

And I can’t stop thinking about it.

Because I don’t ever want him to stop being silly.

I grew up surrounded by silly.  My parents are some of the silliest people I know, and the friends of theirs that were around when I was little were just the same.  For years I struggled to remember how many days were in each month because every time I tried to recite the ’30 days hath September’ poem it morphed into this silly version that I learnt from one of their very good friends.

Picture

That friend sadly passed away at the start of the year, and while it’s extremely sad, there’s some comfort in remembering the gloriously silly things he used to say.  Who wants to be remembered as boring and serious?!

I would much prefer to leave behind a legacy of fun and laughter, and I think he would be happy that I remember him in that way.

Life can be so serious if we let it.  The news is full of stories of pain and hardship and misery.  It’s easy to believe that that’s just what life is.  Especially as we get older, we’re led to believe that we need to put away childish things and get serious.

Well I say yah boo sucks to that!

How boring would life, and the world in fact, be if we did away with silliness?

So, Rhys, you be silly as much as you like, and I’ll do the same.  Let’s sing nonsense songs, dance round the kitchen and do things back to front.

After all, life’s too long to be boring!

Do not regret growing older

A quote about growing older.

It’s my birthday this week.  On Thursday I turn 33, and that is absolutely fine by me!

I was chatting with a friend a while ago and we ended up talking about how we felt when we turned 30.  She told me she had the almost stereotypical response to it.  Not quite Joey from Friends panic levels about it (Why God, why?!?!), but she wasn’t very happy about it.

I, on the other hand, was quite happy to turn 30.  It just didn’t feel like a big deal.  Maybe because I felt happy with where my life was at that stage.  I mean, of course there were pieces of the life puzzle that weren’t quite in place yet (ha, there are still pieces missing now), but the main elements were there.  I was happily married, with a much longed for baby.

And now, 3 years on, I have a wonderful baby girl as well and I feel like I’m slowly getting my act together in other parts of my life.  So I feel happy to be where I am in my life at this age!

I have also learnt over the years that there are some things in this life that you just cannot prevent or change.  You can’t stop the rain from falling.  You can’t change another person if they don’t want to change.  And you can’t stop time from passing.

Simple fact is, you will get older.  You can’t change that, so why not embrace it.  In fact, be thankful for it.

Do not regret growing older

I’m getting older, and that is fine by me.  My age sometimes catches me by surprise (I think I’m still about 23 in my head), I don’t always feel like a ‘proper grown up’, and yet there are other times when I’m caught out and suddenly feel really old, but that’s just life isn’t it!

So on Thursday I will celebrate another year lived.  Most likely there will be cake, and I’ll eat the lot.  No regrets here!

Not so worried second time around (Wicked Wednesdays)

I never thought I was one of those people who was really bothered by mess, but when Rhys was a toddler I was a bit, well, precious, about him getting wet and mucky.

Second time around though I’m feeling a little more relaxed about it all.  So when Nerys climbed up on the Logan stone at the middle of the Gorsedd stones in Singleton Park and got straight down on her knees to splash her hands in the puddles up there, well, I just laughed!

The perfect cleaning philosophy

It’s the summer holidays.

My in-laws have been away and therefore I’ve had no child-free time for the past week.

So, in short, not a lot has been done.

Well, we’ve been to the park, we’ve baked, we’ve played.  We’ve been busy.  But there’s not been a lot of time for much housework to be done.  So today I’m taking comfort in this quote from Sarah Millican.

This summer I will be apologising for not having cleaned my house.  The actual cleaning can start in September.  Maybe by then I will have found a cleaning routine that works for my family!

Slow cooker sweet potato, carrot and leek soup

Ok, I know it’s nearly August, and not really soup season, but it’s been so un-summery the last few days that it felt ‘right’ to be making soup!

I normally make mycarrot and lentil soup but this week fancied something a bit different.  So I had a dig around in the fridge and found some leftover sweet potato and some carrots and we had some leek in the freezer.

So I thought, well, they should all go nicely together!

Picture

Here is the recipe I came up with:

What you need:

2 small sweet potatoes
1 medium carrot
1 leek
1 litre vegetable or chicken stock
Black pepper

What you do:

1) Peel the sweet potatoes and carrot and chop into small chunks.

2) Slice the leek into discs about a centimetre wide.

3) Pop all that into the slow cooker.

4) Add a litre of stock.

5) Give it all a stir then add a good dose of black pepper.

6) Pop the lid on and cook for about 8 hours on low, or 4 hours on high.

7) Once it’s all cooked, blend it up to your preferred consistency.

8) Enjoy!

A few things to note:

  • This soup is quite sweet, so you might want to add some more black pepper once it’s cooked to balance out the flavours.
  • If you want a thicker soup you can always add some lentils when you’re putting everything in the slow cooker.

  • As is the way with soup, this is pretty adaptable, so you can easily change the amount of each ingredient that you put in depending on what you’ve got in the fridge!
