#ShowYouWereThere round up

‘Show you were there’ round up

It’s Sunday, which can only mean one thing around here – time for another round up from my lovely little Instagram community #ShowYouWereThere.

In case you’ve not heard about it before, #ShowYouWereThere is all about getting more parents in more photos.  So any photos that feature you, or your partner, in some way, shape or form then just tag them with #ShowYouWereThere when you share them on Instagram to join in, and potentially be featured in one of these little round ups!

Now, on to my four favourite photos that were shared in the last week.

My first pick is from Lucy at Mrs H’s Favourite Things.  It’s such a sweet mother/daughter photo, but more than that, I really admire Lucy’s openness and honesty in her captions.  CBT is something I’ve been looking in to, as I think it might help with my anxiety, so it’s really good to know that Lucy is finding it helpful.

My next pick for this week is from Alex at That Butterfly Effect.

Well done to her son, this is such a gorgeous photo, and I love how Alex wrote in her caption that when she looks at it what really shines through for her is happiness, because that’s what I see too.  I love photos where there’s a real connection between the person in front of the camera and the person behind it!

Slight change in pace with my third pick for this week!  This photo from Elaine at Entertaining Elliot just really made me laugh.  I think we’ve all been there haven’t we, trying to get a ‘nice’ photo with our children!

My final choice this week is from Wendy at Naptime Natter.

What can I say, I really can’t resist a photo of a baby-wearing mama!

Thank you so much to everyone who is using #ShowYouWereThere, I love seeing your photos popping up over on instagram, they always bring a huge smile to my face!

Now, my turn.

Nerys and I went out for a quick trip to Cwmdonkin Park yesterday, and ended up staying and playing for nearly 3 hours.  She pushed her Elsa doll on the swings, went on zip wire and whizzed down the big slide.  We went to the little cafe and ate welsh cakes and brownies.  We played hide and seek in the play park that has very few good places to hide in it.  And we took photos.

show you were there round up 5 november

So often I get too nervous and self-conscious to take these kinds of photos, using the timer function on the camera to run into the frame.  But I’m so pleased I got over it and grabbed this picture yesterday!

If you’d like to join in with my little community and possibly be featured in my next round up (with a nice link back to your blog!) then just share a photo of yourself over on instagram using #ShowYouWereThere.  It’s all about getting more parents in more photos.  And if you’d like to take part in my guest post series ‘The photo I’m thankful for‘ then take a look at this post or email me at thisgloriouslife@gmail.com for more information.

keeping home and garden safe

Keeping your home and garden safe

Whether you own your own home or rent it, home security is quite likely to be a big concern.  None of us like to think that we’ll ever be the victim of a break-in or burglary, but the truth is these things do happen.

And it’s not just our homes we need to think about, burglars often target gardens too, as more and more people are buying gorgeous garden furniture and accessories.

There are several things we can do though to make our homes, and gardens, more secure.

keeping home and garden safe

Rattan Direct have put together a really useful guide to home and garden security, designed to help all of us protect our properties and feel safer.

The guide is really in-depth, revealing some interesting facts and figures that I didn’t know before.  Like the fact that most burglaries actually take place between 10am and 3pm, when people are most likely to be out at work.  For some reason I assumed most were carried out at night, not during the day.

Most importantly though the guide provides loads of advice on how best to keep our homes and gardens safe and secure.

They even offer tips on how to keep pets safe, because as awful as it sounds, there has been a rise in the number of dogs in particular being taken from back gardens.  There are some simple steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of this happening to your dog though, and these are clearly laid out in Rattan Direct’s guide.

With the clocks going back and the evenings getting darker earlier, now is a great time to really think about how secure your home and garden are.  And to start taking steps to improve things if they’re not as secure as they could be.

If you’re not sure where to start, then head over and have a read of the home and garden security guide for some great tips to get you on the right track.

Exploring Croatia: Europe’s newest tourist hotspot

When people think about going on holiday to Europe, their minds will often be instantly drawn to well-established tourist destinations like Italy, Greece, Spain and France. But a country that has been experiencing a tourism boom in recent years is Croatia. With miles of coastline to be explored and interesting historical attractions up and down the country, there is plenty to enjoy in Europe’s newest tourist hotspot. Let’s take a look at a few of them here.

Zagreb

The capital of Croatia is nice and small, so you can easily walk around to see many of the top attractions in a single day. As well as the historical churches and statues, one of the main sights that has been drawing people in recent years is the Museum of Broken Relationships, a sometimes sad and sometimes funny look at break-ups of all kind. Overall, it is a friendly place and a good starting point for a Croatian holiday.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

With cascading waterfalls set against green hills, there is a lot to marvel at and enjoy in Plitvice Lakes National Park. There are plenty of easy walking trails that take in much of the scenery, so decide how much time you have and how far you would like to go. There are also boats that ferry you around so you can cover the distance in a quicker and very scenic way.

Split

Croatia’s second city is in a lovely coastal location, and it has a wonderfully Mediterranean feel when you are wandering by the sea. In the heart of the town, the mighty Diocletian’s Palace dominates the area. Rather than just being a historical landmark, it is still a working town where there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Just outside of the centre of town, you can walk up hundreds of steps to get a stunning view over the city and surrounding area.

Hvar Island

croatia tourist hotspot

While you are in Croatia, you will certainly want to visit at least one of the islands, and you could do so with a company like The Big Sail. And if you are only going to go to a single island, Hvar is the most well-known, though it has become something of a haven for the super-rich. There is still plenty to enjoy on a budget, including sailing out to some of the smaller surrounding islands by water taxi.

Dubrovnik

The setting of King’s Landing in the hugely popular TV series Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik is fast-becoming one of Europe’s most popular tourist towns. And with its historic walled city set against the rocky coastline, it is no wonder it has become so popular. Still, you shouldn’t let this put you off coming and there is still plenty to enjoy, particularly if you visit in the colder months when it is a lot less crowded and you are more likely to find a little corner of the city all to yourself.

There is a whole lot to love in Croatia, and these five places give you a good starting point if you are planning a holiday here.

Appy kids company – fruit juice drinks review

I’ve been quite lucky really, in that both my children have always been good at getting enough to drink.  They’re even both pretty good at drinking plain water, which is really great.

They do enjoy fruit drinks as well though.

Especially when they come in fun cartons or pouches it seems!

They were so excited when a parcel arrived from Appy Kids company recently, and they opened it up to see various pouches of fruit juice drinks with some of their favourite characters on.

We were given a few different flavours to try – mixed berries, apple and orange.

The mixed berried juice drink comes in a box of five pouches, all of which are bright pink with pictures of Dora the Explorer on it.

The apple and orange juice drinks also come in packs of five, but these have pictures of the characters from Paw Patrol on them.  Both my children like both Dora and Paw Patrol so were really excited to see the characters on the drinks.

I was most excited by the fact that the drinks have all been created to be a healthier option for children.

The Appy kids company mission is to be the number 1 healthier choice for families, and they have spent a lot of time making sure their drinks not only taste great, but are lower in sugar too.  The drinks we’ve been trying are all sweetened with Stevia which is a plant-based sweetener, that is about 200 times sweeter than sugar so you don’t need to use much at all to get that sweeter taste.

The drinks are also all fortified with vitamins A, C and E which is a real bonus to me.  Anything that gets a little extra goodness into my children is good in my book!

Nerys in particular has been absolutely loving trying out the different drinks we were sent.

I may be slightly regretting my decision to put them into a cupboard that she can get into easily!  Although to be fair she does always ask before going and grabbing one, and she can’t actually open them by herself anyway because it is a little bit tricky to pierce the pouches with the straw.

I just love the fact that she feels like she’s getting a real treat when I let her have one, while I know that they’re actually a pretty healthy option for her and not jam-packed with sugar.

The pouches are a great size and feel nice and sturdy so I think they would hold up well if they were put in a lunchbox for school.

With them being so sturdy they stand up well instead of toppling over when the children put them down, and they’ve been able to hold them quite firmly without the juice being squeezed/squirted out of the straw.

All in all, we’ve been impressed with the drinks we’ve tried from Appy Kids company, I have a feeling it’s something we’ll be popping in our trolley in the future!

‘Show you were there’ round up

Time for another round up from my lovely little Instagram community #ShowYouWereThere.

Now, on to my four favourite photos that were shared in the last week.

First up is this incredibly sweet photo from Katy at Hot Pink Wellingtons.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a bit of a sucker for baby-wearing photos and I just couldn’t not include this one in this week’s round up!  How great does Katy look, and how pretty is that ring sling?!

Next up is this beautifully autumnal photo from Kerry at Kerry Louse Norris.

It’s such a sweet photo, made even sweeter by the fact that her daughter took it.  She really is a little photographer in the making!

My third pick for this week is from Donna at What The Redhead Said.

Doesn’t this photo just make you smile along with them, they all look so happy!  Such a gorgeous capture by Colette of We’re Going On An Adventure.

My last pick for this week is this lovely photo from Laura at Life With Baby Kicks.

Well done to Laura’s husband for pushing through and completing the marathon, and more importantly well done to her son for doing such wonderful writing on the signs!

Thank you so much to everyone who is using #ShowYouWereThere, I love seeing your photos popping up over on instagram, they always bring a huge smile to my face!

Now, my turn.

Last week in my round up I admitted that I hadn’t been getting in front of the camera that much, and I pledged to make a point of doing it at least once a week from now on.  Well I’m off to a good start, with this windswept photo taken at Swansea bay with the wild winds of storm Brian whistling past me!

show you were there my turn

Did anyone else venture out in the stormy weather, or did you choose the more sensible option and stay inside?!

Living Arrows 2017 – 42/52

The half term holidays are edging closer, and I for one am ready for them.  The children are definitely ready for the break too.  You can see that they are both starting to get tired by the end of the week, and could really do with a week of not having to rush out the door every morning.

They’ve both settled into school really well so far this year though.

Nerys had one day a few weeks ago where she had a wobble and cried going into her class, but every other day she has given me a hug and a kiss at the door and then happily strolled in.

Rhys was really quite nervous about going into year 2, but so far he seems to be doing well.  I think the long break from school over the summer holidays did him a lot of good, and he seems much better able to cope with his big emotions and stay calm.

And on Friday he came out of school with a big smile on his face, hiding this little trophy behind his back.

living arrows

Throughout the week his teacher gives out what they call dojo points to the children.  They’re handed out for things like being determined, trying really hard, being quiet and ready to learn and generally being nice, helpful members of the class.

At the end of each week, the child with the most dojo points gets given this little trophy to take home for the weekend.  And last week must have been a good one for Rhys as he was the one clutching that trophy on Friday.

He was incredibly proud of himself, it was such a lovely way to end the school week.

I really quite like the concept behind these dojo points.  What I like best though is that Rhys’ teacher must be doing something right when she announces the winner each week because every other week up till now Rhys has been nothing but excited for the child who had the most points.

There has been no jealousy, no upset that he didn’t win.

Just pure excitement and happiness for the person who did win.

And from chatting to the other parents, it seems that the other children in the class are the same way.  So I get the impression that, while there is a prize each week, the whole thing isn’t being presented as a competition.  It seems to be much more about encouraging everyone to try their best and, to celebrate those who try their hardest each week.

Does your child’s school use dojo points?  If they do, what do you think about them?

Let the fairies take your worries away – Irish fairy door company worry plaque review

I’ve written a few times on this blog about how Rhys is a sensitive child, who quite often feels anxious and worried about different things.  The other day I was watching Bake Off, and he got really upset when he realised that it was a competition and that someone had to leave each week.  I had to reassure him that it was ok, that they were happy to go back and see their families and that they all got to come back at the end to see who won.

That gives you a sense of how sensitive he is though.  He really takes things to heart, and I think all sorts of things play on his mind that might not bother other people in the slightest.

I’ve mentioned before that we try to encourage him to talk to us about his worries, and this does help him to work things through.  I’m always looking for different things that might also help though, so was really pleased when I was asked if we would like to review a worry plaque from the Irish fairy door company.

Let the fairies take your worries away

The worry plaque is a really wonderful idea, from a company that specialises is bringing fairy magic to the lives of children.

It is designed as a way to help children to let go of their worries, rather than holding on to them.  The way it works is lovely and simple.  Your child places their hand on the plaque and thinks of the thing they are worried about.

The hand imprint glows red as the fairies listen to the worries, and then glows green to let your child know that the fairies have heard the worry and taken it away.

worry-plaque-irish-fairy-door-company-review

As soon as the plaque arrived I was impressed.

The packaging is bright and colourful; I really love the rainbow design that gives that impression that this is something a bit magical from the start.

Inside the box is the plaque, along with screws to fix it to the wall and a nice little information booklet.

What’s worth noting is that the 3 AA batteries that you need are not included, so make sure you have some at home if you want to be able to use the plaque straight away.

One thing I did think was really useful though, is that the information booklet can be used to help you if you want to hang the plaque on the wall as it has guide holes marked on it at exactly the right distance apart for where you want the screws to go in the wall.

After I’d taken the plaque out of the box I was able to take a good look at it.

worry-plaque

The plaque is made of plastic, but it’s designed to look like a piece of wood cut from a tree trunk, which I think works really well.  In the middle of the plaque is the hand imprint, which is the perfect size for children (it’s just a teeny bit too small for me to comfortably fit my hand in).

There is also a little rhyme written around the plaque that I really love:

“A fairy’s magic, changes red to green, gone are your worries, never to be seen”

It’s a nice little reminder for Rhys that when the light changes from red to green it means his worries have been heard and taken away.

As soon as we had put the batteries in Rhys was keen to give the plaque a try.

irish-fairy-door-company-worry-plaque

Rhys seems really taken with the idea behind the worry plaque.  Although he’s a bit confused about the fact that it lights up, and the light changes colour, even if he’s not thinking of a worry at that time.  So I think we’ll keep the plaque somewhere out of reach and get it out for him when he actually has something he is anxious about.  Hopefully that way he’ll keep his faith in it, and it’ll work its magic to help take his worries away.

I think the worry plaque is such a lovely idea.

For younger children who still believe in fairies and all things magical, it’s a wonderful idea for helping them to let their worries and anxieties out.

And in case you’re wondering, the fairies use the energy from the worries they take to grant wishes for children around the world!

You can find out more about the worry plaque and the Irish fairy door company on their website – www.theirishfairydoorcompany.com

Also over on the website is a whole host of videos for your children to watch, to help reassure them even more after they’ve used the plaque and given their worries to the fairies.  The videos cover a wide range of common worries, from spiders and insects to worries about friendships at school.  So whatever your child is worried about there should be a quick video for them to watch to help them feel a bit better.
