Living Arrows 2017 – 39/52

Around this time every year two events happen.

The Swansea bay 10k takes place, and all the students arrive for the new year at the university.

And for some unknown reason, these two events always take place on the same weekend.  So all the students are trying to get to their accommodation when various roads around Swansea are closed for the 10k.  There must be some logic behind it, but it just always amuses me that the two things happen on the same weekend, as if the organisers just want to make arrivals weekend a bit more of a challenge for all the students!

The 10k this year was held on this Sunday just gone.  And for the 3rd year in a row Rhys and his Nana ran in the children’s 1k race before the main event started.

It’s something that Rhys seems to really enjoy, and this year he even ran ahead for the last little bit, sprinting towards the finish line on his own.  I think that was what we were all most proud of, seeing him feel brave enough to go for it on his own.

He was so proud of himself at the end of the race, and was really excited when we told him that he had finished it a lot quicker than he did last year.  Next year we think he might be ready to run the whole thing by himself, and Nerys has said all day that she wants to do it too next time.

So watch this space for two excited children with medals this time next year!

incontinence-after-childbirth-how-common

How common is incontinence after childbirth?

If you’ve experienced incontinence during your pregnancy you’ll know that it isn’t the best feeling! You may be worried that it could continue after childbirth. Though there are plenty of options such as incontinence pads to help deal with that eventuality if it happens, it’s not ideal, especially with a new baby.

how-common-incontinence-after-childbirth

Let’s look into how and why incontinence may or may not continue after childbirth, and how you can manage the issue.

In what circumstances is incontinence likely to continue after you give birth?

There are two types of incontinence that you may experience – stress incontinence or urge incontinence.  Stress incontinence is when you experience a leak during even a small physical exertion such as coughing, running, jumping or laughing. The leakage occurs due to the pressure that the physical activity, small as it may be, puts on your bladder.

Most women who experience stress incontinence also often have to endure urge incontinence. Urge incontinence is the result of an overactive bladder, and you will find yourself feeling the need to go and leaking even when your bladder is empty.

Incontinence is more common in pregnant women who are over 35 or obese. It is also more likely to continue after childbirth for those who have had a vaginal delivery. Those who have had a C-section are less likely to experience it.

If you’ve gone through a labour where there has been the use of forceps, this is very likely to result in incontinence after childbirth as your pelvic muscles get affected. This can be rectified somewhat by specific exercises which will be discussed in further detail below.

Is there a way to prevent your incontinence carrying on after childbirth?

It’s important to note that the answer to preventing incontinence after childbirth is not a C-section. There is no guarantee that a C-section will completely prevent it.  C-sections also pose various other risks which require serious consideration, for both mum and baby.

Often, ongoing incontinence is a condition that has been passed down genetically. Our recommendation is to perform Kegel exercises to start getting your pelvic muscles in shape. These are not as effective during pregnancy, but after childbirth they can help to reduce both types of incontinence.

Kegel exercises will help by strengthening your pelvic floor muscles. These muscles support your uterus and bladder. Kegel exercises can be done anytime and anywhere, though it is recommended that you do them lying down. It is a quick and easy exercise, with the simple steps as below:

Tighten and hold your pelvic floor muscles for five seconds and relax the muscles for five minutes. As you do more repetitions, try and progress to 10 seconds of contraction at a time. We’d recommend doing the Kegel exercises around 3 times a day, in sets of 10 repetitions.

Some women choose to hire a personal trainer after their birth, once recovery has taken place of course, so that they can get their bodies back to normal after carrying another person inside them for 9 months. While trainers may not be in everybody’s price bracket as they are paid by the hour to the tune of £25, there’s no harm in seeking one or two sessions where you can find out specific exercises related to pelvic floor muscles and then continue on your own free of charge.

If you can’t reduce your incontinence, how do you deal with it?

If you still find that your incontinence is persisting and disrupting your life, it is possible to be fitted for a pessary. This is a tiny ring made of silicone which can be placed inside your vagina to prevent leakage through the day. Some women may choose to use this only when embarking upon physical activity.

If you’re finding that the situation is really affecting your life negatively, surgical options are available. There is ‘bladder sling’ surgery which has a high success rate. It is only valid if you are not planning on getting pregnant again. Within this surgery, your doctor will insert a sling inside you to offer support to your urethra.

If you’re not yet at the stage where you feel you require surgery, there are a range of other incontinence support products available for women such as incontinence pads and pants.

Hartmann Direct offers an extensive range of incontinence products and supplies, in different absorbencies and sizes. Find out more online or call 0800 028 9470.

#ShowYouWereThere round up

‘Show you were there’ round up (week twenty nine)

Here we are again!  Another Sunday and another round up of my little Instagram community #ShowYouWereThere.

Every week I go through all the wonderful photos that have been shared over on Instagram and choose my four favourites to feature here on the blog.

Most of the time I pick the photos that jump out or speak to me the most, with no real theme or anything behind my choices.  This week though, I seem to have managed to chose photos that do sort of fit a theme.

This week’s picks all seem to celebrate different elements of being a parent, photos that are a bit different from my usual picks but that are wonderful all the same because they show something of who the people behind them are.

So here they are!

First up is this brilliantly fun photo from Jax at Jax and Joseph.  People often say that one of the great things about being a parent is getting to see the world through a child’s eyes again, and surely that then extends to being able to play around like a child again too!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BY_XeH7AoU_/?tagged=showyouwerethere

My next pick is this lovely photo of Louise from Mummy Miller.  Not only is it a fab photo of Louise (anyone else in love with her pinafore dress?!) but I love that it was taken to celebrate a child-free day out with her mum.

As much as we all adore our children, we all need some time to just be with other grown-ups sometimes, don’t we!

My third choice this week is this photo from Louise at Fizzy Peaches.  I love how this photo really shows a lot about what is going on in Louise’s world right now, without actually showing her at all.

Last but not least this week is this exciting photo from Jaymee at The Mum Diaries.  I can only imagine how amazing it must feel to pick up a magazine and see your words in print, well done Jaymee!

Thank you so much to everyone who is using #ShowYouWereThere, I love seeing your photos popping up over on instagram, they always bring a huge smile to my face!

colic-awareness-month-you-are-not-alone

Colic – you’re not alone

There’s been a story in the news recently about a midwife who has been pleading with couples to stop having sex at Christmas, because every September the labour wards are pushed to their limits with the amount of babies being born.

So with more people becoming parents in September than any other month, it’s the perfect time for raising awareness of something that one in five of them will be likely to face.

Colic.

Colic-you-are-not-alone

Colic is when babies cry uncontrollably for hours at a time.

It tends to be diagnosed when a baby cries for over three hours in a row, on three or more days a week for at least three weeks.  Doctors still don’t know exactly what causes colic, and there’s no one treatment that will help all babies.  It’s one of those awful things that you just have to ride out.

Colic normally goes away when the baby gets to around 4 months old.  Now, in the greater scheme of things, 4 months doesn’t sound that long.  But when you’re right in the middle of it, with a baby that just will not stop crying, 4 months feels like an eternity.

That’s why Infacol and Cry-sis have teamed up to launch Colic awareness month.  To let parents of colicky babies know that they’re not alone, and to offer support and advice on how to cope.

Infacol is the number one colic remedy in Britain.  It can be used from birth to help sooth the discomfort babies feel from wind and griping pain that comes along with colic.  You can put a few drops in your baby’s bottle or directly in their mouths, using the dropper that’s built into the bottle top.

We used it with Rhys when he seemed to be suffering with trapped wind and it really did make a difference.

Cry-sis is the only parenting charity that is dedicated to supporting parents who are trying to cope with excessive infant crying.  Their website is a great source of information for parents, and can help you to work out why your baby might be crying and suggest some ideas to help calm them.

They also have a phoneline that you can call to speak to a trained volunteer who can offer you advice or just listen when you are struggling to cope with excessive crying.

I think this is invaluable.

We all know how hard it can be to cope when babies don’t seem to stop crying.

And if your baby is crying non-stop for hours at a time, leading to lots of sleepless nights, it can put a huge amount of strain on you, and your relationships.

Research carried out by Infacol found that just over half of British mums feel that lack of sleep has affected their relationship with their partner, and 38% feel that it has affected their relationship with their children.

colic-not-alone-awareness

For the first year of Nerys’ life I had sleepless night after sleepless night, as she would wake every couple of hours for a feed.

I remember all too well how the lack of sleep made me feel.  I found myself eating way too much junk food, I was foggy-headed and very emotional.  And that was just the start of it, sleep-deprivation can have a whole heap of effects on us.

It’s been suggested that sleep deprivation, and by extension colic, might be linked to post-natal depression which makes complete sense to me.  This is an area that really does need to be investigated, so that parents can get the help they need if they are affected by either colic or PND.

This is part of what is behind the creation of Colic awareness month.  To make more parents, and parents-to-be, aware of what colic is and the impact it might have on them.  At the moment, one in three British mums say that before their child was born they didn’t know anything about colic.

The more we can talk about colic the better.

So that parents dealing with it don’t feel so alone.  And so that they can get the help and support they need.

If your baby does have colic, then there are several things you can try to help calm them down:

  • Try a change of scenery.  If you’ve been sat at home with them, try putting them in their buggy or baby carrier and heading out for a little walk.  On the other hand, if you’ve been out and about all day then heading home for some quiet cuddles might help.
  • Give your baby a warm bath and then try some baby massage.
  • If they seem to be suffering with tummy pains then try lying them on their backs and gently bending their legs in towards their tummies, or round in a cycling motion.
  • Give white noise a try.  Babies aren’t used to silence, so white noise like a hairdryer or a fan can be really soothing to them.  You can get apps for your phone that play these kind of noises.

If nothing you try helps to stop the crying then remember it’s ok to ask for help.

Ask your partner, a friend, a relative, or even your next door neighbour, to hold or sit with your baby for a little while to give you a break.

Listening to a baby cry, and feeling helpless to stop it can be exhausting and incredibly stressful.

If you feel that it’s all getting too much, then put your baby down in their cot and walk away.  They’ll be completely safe while you go into another room for a few minutes, or even take a quick shower.

Then reach out for help.

Speak to your family, friends, or health visitor about how you’re feeling.

Most of all, know that you’re not alone in this.  And that, while it might not feel like it at the time, this will pass and things will get better.

#ShowYouWereThere round up

‘Show you were there’ round up (week twenty eight)

It’s Sunday, which means it’s time for another round up from my little Instagram community #ShowYouWereThere.

In case you don’t know, the community is all about us parents getting in more photos both with and for our children.  Any photos that feature you, or your partner, in any way please do share them and tag them with #ShowYouWereThere over on Instagram.

Every week I pick my four favourites to feature in my round up, and here are my picks for this week.

First up is this lovely photo of Louise from Mummy Miller.

It’s such a feel-good photo, especially with the caption that goes with it about how much Louise has done in the last five years!

My second pick is this sweet family photo from Sabrina at The Mummy Stylist.

I think we all have family pictures like this don’t we, when we’re the only ones actually looking at the camera and smiling!

My next choice is from Donna at What the Redhead Said and is such a lovely family photo (taken by The Littlest Darlings).

I also now really want some dungarees again after seeing Donna in hers!

My fourth and final pick for this week is another whole family photo, this time from Susie at This is Me Now.

This photo is just such a sunny, happy one to finish this round up with!

Thank you so much to everyone who is using #ShowYouWereThere, I love seeing your photos popping up over on instagram, they always bring a huge smile to my face!

Now my turn.

I’m sharing this photo from a trip to the beach last weekend, where Nerys was trying out some yoga poses for me for my review of the book ‘Kids Yoga’.  She was trying to do tree pose, and had a bit of trouble balancing to start with so Steve was helping to keep her steady.

I just love the way she’s looking at him in this photo!

Yoga and ducks – fun with ParkLives in Swansea

If you live in Swansea you may well have noticed banners and signs for ParkLives up in the local parks.  And you might have wondered what they’re all about.

Well, ParkLives is an initiative that was launched by Coca-Cola back in 2014.

They work in partnership with local authorities across the UK to offer all sorts of free activities to encourage people to get out and enjoy their local parks and green spaces.

Swansea is one of 10 cities that is involved with ParkLives and it’s been amazing this summer seeing all the different sessions that are going on in so many of our parks.

We had a great time at the family fun day in Brynmill Park last week and we’ve also been along to a family yoga session and an arts and crafts session that were both so much fun.

yoga-ducks-parklives-swansea

The first activity that we tried out was a family yoga session in Cwmdonkin park.

The ParkLives website said that the session was suitable for children aged 5 and over, so Nerys stayed home to do some gardening with Steve and Rhys and I walked over to the park to give yoga a try.

parklives-swansea-family-yoga

I was really pleased when I first saw that family yoga was available with ParkLives, because it was something I had mentioned to Rhys at the start of the summer holidays that maybe we should try.

He is such a high energy child I thought that yoga might be a great activity to try, to see if it could give him some skills to use to calm himself down and focus when he needs to.

When we got to the session we were given a lovely friendly welcome and then we spread out our blanket and got to it.

I have to admit I was a bit nervous before we went to the session because I’m not the most flexible person and haven’t done that much yoga before.  But I really shouldn’t have worried.  The session was really relaxed and fun, and it really didn’t matter if we couldn’t quite do the poses as well as some of the other people there.

yoga-children-family-parklives-swansea

Part of the session involved the children choosing cards with poses on them for their parents to try out with them.

Rhys chose the down dog card. which is one of the few poses I know so I was pretty happy with that!

family-yoga-parklives-swansea-cwmdonkin-park

The session lasted an hour which felt just about right and I was really proud of Rhys for staying focused on what we were doing the whole time.

I really enjoyed every aspect of the family yoga session, and best of all as we walked home Rhys told me he really enjoyed it and would like to do it again.  So I’m pretty sure we’ll be heading back for more sessions, it is just such a lovely thing for us to do together.

The other session we have been along to this summer was a fab arts and crafts activity in the discovery centre in Brynmill park.

The session was listed on the ParkLives website as a ‘design a duck’ activity, and honestly we were a little bit intrigued as to what it would actually involve!

When we got to the park we found that it was a lovely simple craft activity that involved using all sorts of materials to decorate a picture of a duck.

design-duck-brynmill-park-swansea-parklives

As soon as we sat down we were handed crayons and tinsel and tissue paper and felt in all sorts of colours.

Rhys and Nerys couldn’t wait to get started, and I loved sitting back and watching their different approaches.

Nerys went down the creative route, and made a beautifully bright and colourful duck.  It even had 2 googly eyes on its tummy, which added a nice little picasso-like touch of abstractism to her creation!

parklives-swansea-duck-art-crafts-brynmill-park

Rhys, on the other hand, decided straight away that he wanted to design a duck that actually looked like a real duck.

I find it fascinating to see how my children work and think in such different ways!

Rhys worked really hard on his picture, and was so proud of it when he had finished.  Especially when the judge came along to choose their favourite duck and his won!

duck-craft-art-brynmill-park-swansea-parklives

He couldn’t quite believe it to start with, I really don’t think he was expecting his picture to be chosen.

That little toy duck means really quite a lot to him and he was so excited to show it to Steve and then to his grandparents when he saw them the next day.

Our experiences with ParkLives in Swansea have been really positive so far.

The sessions have all been really well organised, and run by lovely welcoming staff.  What I really love is the variety of activities that are available.

The options in Swansea include:

  • Tai Chi
  • Scooters and skateboard sessions
  • Dodgeball and endball
  • Parkour
  • Walk and talk sessions
  • Circus skills

There are so many sessions available, there really is something for everyone.
