messy bun autumn winter hair trend

My favourite hair trends for Autumn/Winter 2017

I have a confession to make.  I’m not that big a follower of fashion.

I tend to fall back on clothes and styles that are familiar and that I feel suit me, rather than following what is trendy each season.

The problem with that is that I can end up stuck in a rut, still wearing the same clothes and the same hairstyle that I wore ten years ago.  Actually, my hair is pretty much the same now as it was on my wedding day ten years ago, just a little bit longer.

So maybe it’s time to mix things up a bit.

I’ve been taking a look at the hair trends for Autumn/Winter 2017, with some help from Ellisons, and here are my favourites.

Side partings.

Ok, this is a bit of a cheat, because I’ve been wearing my hair in a side parting for years.  But it’s lovely to feel like I’m on trend with it!

Some of the partings on the runways this season were really deep, so I think I might gently start mixing things up a bit by moving my parting about a bit and seeing how I like it.  It might not seem like much, but just wearing a parting on the other side to normal can change up your look.

Up-dos.

I think Autumn/Winter is often the season of up-dos, as everyone gears up for Christmas party season.

For me as a busy mum there is something very appealing about a messy bun.  Or for days when I want to feel a bit more polished then a sleek ponytail like those shown by Oscar de la Renta would be a great option.

I’ve also been saying for ages that I want to learn how to do things like french plaits for Nerys, so this winter might be the time for me to get practising on my own hair and trying out some different braided looks.

Acid hair.

Multicoloured hair has been a huge trend this year, and the Autumn/Winter twist is for really bright colours.

Oh I wish I was brave enough to go for a style like this!

I dye my hair a lot thanks to the greys that started appearing when I was eighteen, but I tend to stick to nice safe browns and auburns.  Maybe it’s time to try something a bit bolder!  But remember, no matter what, take care of your hair using organic products like these conditioners. It’ll be much healthier!

These looks have all been noted by Ellisons as being key trends for Autumn/Winter 2017, and they’ve also put together their picks for the key trends for eyes, lips and nails.  From romantic neutrals on the eyes, to bright red lips and festive gold nails there are trends to suit everyone.

What I love is that soft, pretty neutrals are trends for both eyes and nails this season, which is great for an everyday look.

But for anyone hitting the party scene this Christmas there are some much bolder options to go for, like metallic grunge on the eyes and fun chequerboard nails.

Which trend will you be trying out this season?

Living Arrows 2017 – 47/52

Twice last week Nerys asked if I could walk to pick her up from school, because she wanted to walk home instead of going in the car.

She’s getting clever this one.

The way she asked on Monday morning it really seemed like she just liked the idea of walking home.  Then a few minutes later, as if it had just occurred to her, she mentioned that maybe we could stop at the park on the way.  A few minutes after that, she told me she’d had a great idea.  That I could bring her baby and her buggy with me, so that she could push her home and take her for a play at the park too.

I couldn’t really say no after all that!

So on Monday and again on Friday, I left the car at home, and carried baby and her little buggy to school to collect Nerys.

Then we walked home, with a stop at the park on the way.

And it was lovely.  It really was.

There’s something a bit special about slowing down, and going at a three year old’s pace.  Some days I want to get home quickly, so I can put the next load of washing on or get a quick bit of work done while Nerys plays.  Other days though, I relish this slower pace.  Nerys is such great company these days, and so much fun, I love having these times when I have nothing to distract me, nothing to focus on but her.

September will roll around before I know it, and she’ll be in school all day like Rhys.  These afternoons that we have at the moment just the two of us will be gone.  And while some days there are jobs that need to get done, other days I will slow down and relish this season of life before it’s gone and we move on to a whole new way of doing things.

#ShowYouWereThere round up

‘Show you were there’ round up

It’s Sunday, which can only mean one thing around here – time for another round up from my lovely little Instagram community #ShowYouWereThere.

In case you’ve not heard about it before, #ShowYouWereThere is all about getting more parents in more photos.  So any photos that feature you, or your partner, in some way, shape or form then just tag them with #ShowYouWereThere when you share them on Instagram to join in, and potentially be featured in one of these little round ups!

Now, on to my four favourite photos that were shared in the last week.

My first pick is from Amy at The Smallest of Things.

There’s just something about the way her daughter is looking at her that makes me smile!

My second pick is from Vicky at Team Triffic (Ted Wears Organic).

I love this picture so much, twinning is most definitely winning!

Next up is this lovely photo from Kirsty at Kirsty Ralph.  Kirsty has captured such a sweet moment in this photo, I love it!

Thank you so much to everyone who is using #ShowYouWereThere, I love seeing your photos popping up over on instagram, they always bring a huge smile to my face!

Now, my turn.

Last Sunday we braved the cold and went for a walk along the seafront, not long before the sun disappeared for the day.

I took some photos of the children together for this month’s siblings project post and then handed the camera over to Steve so that I could jump in a few pictures too.

show you were there

I still have to make a conscious effort to loosen my grip on the camera and hand it over, but I’m hoping that the more I do it, the more it will become second nature, and the more photos of me with my children there will be!

If you’d like to join in with my little community and possibly be featured in my next round up (with a nice link back to your blog!) then just share a photo of yourself over on instagram using #ShowYouWereThere.  It’s all about getting more parents in more photos.  And if you’d like to take part in my guest post series ‘The photo I’m thankful for‘ then take a look at this post or email me at thisgloriouslife@gmail.com for more information.

date night

Five tips to avoid relationship burnout

If you and your partner have been together for a few years, you might be stuck in a routine.

If you have kids, you will be waking up early, taking them to school, going to work, and coming home late. You will have little or no time to sit down and spend some quality time together, discuss your plans, and enjoy activities you both like.

Relationships without special events and occasions, or date nights are often doomed to be dull and miserable.  Find out below how can you prevent getting too used to each other, and learning to appreciate your partner below.

arrange a date night1. Arrange date nights.

We all need some time off family routines and duties. If you book a day off work together, you can arrange a romantic dinner. If you have kids, opt for a day out in the park followed by a lunch. Whenever you can take a break, try to do something together. Visit a museum, do a pub run visiting different venues in the neighborhoods, or just meet up for a coffee once a week in your lunch break.

2. Take a trip.

If you have kids, get a babysitter or family member to look after them for a few days and go on a trip. Simply jump in the car and explore new places, or check out the deals of Bolsover Cruise Club to arrange a memorable holiday. Depending on how much free time you have, you can take a city break, a cruise, or a day trip without the kids. If you don’t have children yet, you can plan long weekends in romantic destinations every few months to break your routine.

3. Meet up with adult friends.

It is important that you socialize with other people, as well as your partner. Meeting up with friends regularly can help you get a better perspective on your relationship, and discuss issues that bother you, while de-stressing. Go for a dinner, meet up for a coffee, or take a river trip together to catch up on grown up issues and let your hair down.

4. Volunteer together.

If you have children in school, you might decide to volunteer at their school together. You can do anything, from arranging charity events to helping out with school trips. You can bond together better if you are required to work as a team. If you don’t have kids yet, you can look for charities that interest you both and start donating your time together.

go for a walk together

5. Take on a shared hobby.

While a lot of couples don’t share many interests, and there aren’t all that many women who are genuinely interested in motorbikes and football, you can find a hobby you are both passionate about.  Take on walking, go out playing Badminton in the local sports club, or sign up for a cooking class together.

Make sure you are not stuck in the routine of family life and maintain the excitement in your relationship by socialising, arranging trips and date nights, taking on a shared hobby, and listening to each other’s needs.

Living Arrows 2017 – 46/52

When Friday evening came around last week we looked at the weather forecast and realised that we would most likely have a stay-indoors sort of weekend.

It looked like we were due a full weekend of wet and windy weather.

Luckily our only plans were taking Nerys to the doctors on Saturday morning for her flu vaccination and Rhys to his swimming lesson on Sunday.

And, honestly, I would quite happily stay in for a weekend.  I’m a real homebody and love spending time just pottering around at home with my family.

Nerys though, she has this need almost, to get outside.

living arrows

So luckily for her, the rain blew through by Sunday afternoon and we were able to go for a walk along the seafront.

It was getting close to sunset by the time we got down there and man alive it was chilly.

I really don’t think she noticed though.

She never once mentioned that she was feeling cold.  She just loved being outside.  Running on the sand.  Looking out to sea.

She did mention at one point in our walk along the front that she was hungry.  What made me and Steve laugh was the fact that she said it so innocently as we walked past a cafe.

It was brilliantly done.

“I’m really quite hungry”.  Then a minute later, “Oh look, here’s a cafe”.

Yes, what a coincidence!

She is bright this little one, and wicked too, in the best possible way.

self-care tips winter

7 self-care tips to get you through the winter

I’m writing this with the heating on and a hot cup of tea by my side as it is really starting to get chilly now.

Winter is well and truly on its way and if you’re the type of person who struggles a bit when the days get colder and shorter then hopefully this post will help.

Here are 7 self-care tips to help you feel a bit brighter and get you through the winter.

7 self-care tips to get you through the winter

1. Head outside.

Try and get out in the daylight as much as you can.

If you work 9-5 it can be really hard feeling like you’re leaving home in the dark and getting home in the dark.  So try and get out in your lunch break, even if it’s just for a 10 minute walk around the block.

The natural light will give you a boost in Vitamin D that really helps fight the winter blues as well as boosting your immune system.  It might be worth taking Vitamin D supplements if you find you can’t get out in sun enough.

2. Hit the gym.

Or make that walk on your lunch-break a longer power walk.  There was a study carried out at Harvard University back in 2005 that found that simply walking fast for half an hour a day, 5 days a week, or an hour a day, 3 days a week helped to improve feelings of depression.

If the weather is really against you then hitting the gym might actually provide even more benefits, if it’s a brightly lit gym that you visit.  Another study has been done that found that people who exercised under bright lights had better general mental health and vitality.

3. Try dry skin brushing.

Adding a few minutes of dry skin brushing to your daily routine can be a great way to give yourself a little lift.  Using a dry skin brush is a really effective way to get your circulation going in the mornings, and it can also boost the lymphatic system.

To really feel pampered treat yourself to an extra moisturising body lotion to use after your bath or shower.

4. Cosy up with a warm drink.

There’s nothing better on a cold day than a nice mug of something warm and comforting to drink.

Taking a few minutes to curl up and enjoy a hot chocolate, a horlicks or a spiced milk drink can feel lovely and indulgent when you’re feeling a bit blue in the winter.

5. Get creative.

Whether you enjoy sketching, baking or knitting, spending some time doing something creative can really improve your mood and keep the winter blues away.

If you’re not feeling particularly inspired then spend an evening browsing Pinterest, you’re bound to find a creative activity on there that you fancy trying.  And getting in to a state of ‘flow’ where you are completely absorbed in an activity has been shown to improve our sense of well-being.

6.  Eat the right things.

Choose delicious, warming, comforting foods to see you through the winter.  Things like soups and casseroles are great as they feel soothing but generally also contain lots of nutrients.  Bonus points if you add warming spices like garlic, ginger and black pepper which help boost the immune system, boost circulation and add extra antioxidants.

On a slightly less healthy note, make sure to treat yourself to some chocolate too.  After all, it has been shown to help relieve anxiety and make us feel happier.

7. Slow down and head to bed.

Sometimes the best way to take care of yourself in winter is to sort of give in to it.  When the evenings draw in, just allow yourself to slow down.  Rest, read, just hibernate a little.

And if you can, try to go to bed an hour earlier than normal.  The shorter days in winter mean we’re exposed to less daylight, so our bodies produce more melatonin (the sleep hormone that makes us feel tired and ready to sleep).  This means we tend to feel tired earlier in the evening than we do in the warmer months.

Rather than fight that urge, sometimes it’s best to go with it, and head to bed earlier.

What are your favourite things to do to take care of yourself in winter?

2 easy and fun Christmas tree crafts #BostikBlogger

Halloween and Bonfire night are behind us.  The nights are drawing in.  Decorations and festive treats are filling up the shelves in town.

I think it’s about that time of year when we can safely start talking about Christmas.

Which is good because that is the theme for this month’s Bostik Bloggers craft activities!

I’ve kept it simple and fun with two quick Christmas tree crafts – a super easy card idea and a festive felt activity that the children can play with again and again over the festive period.

2 easy and fun Christmas tree crafts

First up is the ridiculously easy Christmas tree card, perfect if you like to add the homemade touch to your Christmas greetings.

They are so quick you could easily make a whole pile of them in an evening in front of a festive film.

To make this super simple Christmas card, you just need 2 things:

  • A card blank (or just a piece of card folded in half)
  • Some washi tape

simple-washi-tape-christmas-tree-card

I’m almost ashamed to write this as a how-to because honestly it’s so easy.

But here’s what you do:

  • Cut a piece of tape to be the trunk of the tree, then stick it down.
  • Choose which order you’ll use your different tapes in, aim for an alternating pattern if you only have 2 or 3 rolls.
  • Cut a length of your first roll of tape and stick it down at the bottom of the tree.
  • Cut a slightly shorter length of your next roll and stick it down above the first piece.  You can overlap them slightly if you want to.
  • Keep on doing this, with slightly shorter pieces of tape each time until you complete your tree.

And that’s it!

So simple, but really effective don’t you think?

simple-washi-tape-christmas-tree-card-002

If you don’t have washi tape then you could cut strips of patterned paper out and stick them down with glue or double sided tape instead.

My second craft activity is this easy felt Christmas tree.

I made mine to be around A5 size, so that we can use it for a Christmas-themed busy bag.  I think it will be great to keep Nerys occupied if we have to sit and wait anywhere during the festive period.

Here’s what you need if you’d like to make one:

  • Pieces of felt in various colours, including brown and green for the tree.
  • Scissors

simple-felt-christmas-tree-craft-supplies

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Cut your green piece of felt into a Christmas tree shape.  I went for a very basic triangle for mine, but you could cut out a more fancy tree shape if you wanted to!
  • Cut a small rectangle of brown felt for the tree trunk.
  • Cut out some strips of felt, then snip into the sides, cutting out little pieces.  This will be your tinsel.
  • Cut out a little star to go at the top of the tree.
  • Cut out various shapes for your other decorations.  Again I kept mine really simple with little circles for baubles but you could get much more creative here.
  • Cut out some squares and rectangles for presents, and thin strips of felt for ribbon.

simple-felt-christmas-tree-craft-activity-decorations

Once you’ve cut out all the different pieces your child can have fun decorating their very own Christmas tree.

Who knows, it might keep them busy while you decorate the real tree this year!

simple-felt-christmas-tree-craft-activity

If you want to go one step further with this you could get some big sheets of felt and create a huge version to stick up on the wall for your child to decorate again and again.

So there you go, 2 Christmas tree crafts to start getting you in the Christmas spirit in next to no time!

Do you like to get crafty and creative at this time of year?

I was sent a box of craft materials to create this post, but all words, opinions and creations are my own.
