cat sleeping on bed

Should you let your pet in your bedroom?

There was a bit of a debate going on in our house the other day.  Rhys said that he really wants to move house soon, so that we can get a pet dog.  The thing is, Nerys is really quite scared of dogs at the moment, so she wasn’t too happy with him saying that!

At the moment we don’t have any pets, but Rhys really would absolutely love to have a dog one day.

My family have always been more cat people than dog people, but Steve is allergic to cat hair, so if we are going to get a pet one day it most likely will be a dog.  Hopefully Nerys will be less scared of them by the time that day comes!

If we did have a dog though, it would have to be kept out of our bedroom because I’m pretty sure that, while it’s not as bad as cat hair, dog hair wouldn’t be great for Steve and his asthma.

As a general rule though, do you think pets should be let in our bedrooms or not?

Fitted bedroom specialists DM Design has analysed the arguments both for and against this decision:

cat sleeping on a bed

For some people it’s a definite yes.

A lot of the time people get pets for comfort, and for company, so it makes complete sense for them to be allowed into the bedroom.

I can completely see how nice it would be to have the weight and warmth of your beloved dog on the foot of your bed as you sleep.

The Mayo Sleep Clinic in Arizona carried out a study that found that the people who let their pets sleep in their bedroom with them felt safer, more secure and more relaxed.  They also had a better night’s rest.

The author of the study, Lois Krahn, explained:

‘Many pet owners view companion animals as family members that they wish to incorporate into as many aspects of their life as possible. Because humans spend considerable time sleeping, a pet owner’s desire to have animals close at night is understandable.”

She also mentioned that people who, for whatever reason, slept alone mentioned that having their pet in the bedroom or on the bed at night gave them a reassuring feeling of companionship.

A further study involved 40 healthy adults having their sleep evaluated with a dog in the bedroom, over a five-month period.

The results of this study showed that they slept better when their pet was on their bed, although not really surprisingly their sleep quality did deteriorate when their pet actually slept under the covers with them.

Dr Krahn thinks that part of the reason people choose to sleep with their pets in the room is down to how our relationships with them have changed over the years.

She commented:

“Today, many pet owners are away from their pets for much of the day, so they want to maximize their time with them when they are home. Having them in the bedroom at night is an easy way to do that. And, now, pet owners can find comfort knowing it won’t negatively impact their sleep.”

So far, so much in favour of letting pets sleep in our bedrooms!

There is though, another side to the argument.

The researchers at the Mayo Clinic have suggested that people who already have difficulty sleeping should think about keeping their pets out of the bedroom.

Another of their research surveys found that 53% of pet owners suggested that their sleep was disrupted by their pets to some extent every night.  Snoring seemed to be an issue for quite a few of the pet owners!

The medical director of the sleep disorders centre has this bit of advice for pet owners:

“Every patient has to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of sleeping with pets and make a personal decision about the sleeping arrangements in the household. Some people are very attached to their pets and will tolerate poorer sleep in order to be near them at night.”

The other thing to consider before letting your pet sleep in  your room is whether either you or your partner have asthma or allergies.

If that’s not an issue at all though, then according to the research it really is just a matter of personal choice if you want to sleep with your pets or not.

What are your thoughts on this?

Do you sleep with your pets in the room or is your bedroom a pet-free sanctuary?

me and mine november family photo

Me and Mine – November 2017

Sometime I feel like I’m just a big old ball of contradictions.

I’m a photographer, but I don’t always feel comfortable taking my camera out and about with me.

I want to document my children’s lives, but I don’t want them to feel that they’re constantly being recorded.

I don’t know if it’s tied in with my anxiety and my OCD, but there are often multiple thoughts whizzing through my mind, arguing, debating and contradicting each other.  It can be hard at times, to find the voice of reason and common sense amongst all that noise.

I’m trying to push through it though, to quiet the noise and focus on what it is that I really want, and what I need to do to get it.

What I really wanted this year, was a photo of our family every month.  We’re one month away from achieving that, and I am honestly so proud about it.  Focusing on this desire for family photos has meant letting my want for it drown out the niggling thoughts that might have tried to stop me doing it:

“I don’t want to be annoying to my family, making them take a photo every month”  “People will think we’re really odd if we set the camera up outside and in public for a photo” “We won’t be organised enough to take nice pictures outside so we’ll have to make do with doing it indoors, and it won’t be the same so lets just not bother”

This year, I’ve tried to push past those thoughts.  To stick my fingers in my ears and sing, “la la la I’m not listening”.

So I’ve started carrying the camera round with me more.  And this month I even remembered to pop the remote trigger in the bag so, honestly, taking these family photos was beyond easy.  I’m hoping that the more I do this, focusing on what I want and fighting against all the negative thoughts that try and stop me getting it, the easier it will become to silence them once and for all.

It’s worth the fight, if it means I get photos like this of my family.

It might not seem much, just a little family snap, but this means the world to me.

On a slightly lighter note, have you seen the photos that pop up every now and then of a women with her children, spelling out a word with sparklers or with their arms?  The mum always thinks they’re spelling out the word ‘love’, but the children change the letters to make, well, something not quite so sweet!

I have a bad feeling that mum will be me one day.

Just look at this picture.  I had no idea I was the only one aiming for a ‘nice’ photo of the four of us.

Honestly though, just like last month, I think this outtake is possibly my favourite out of all the photos we took for me and mine this month.

And you know, Steve and the children were happy to take these photos.  No one even walked past where we were doing it.  And while we were organised enough to get them done out in the lovely natural light this month, I know from last month’s experience that even if we’d done them inside I would still be really happy with them.

With each passing month (week, day) I’m letting go of various ideals that just aren’t me.  I’ve said before that our family photos will never feature us in perfectly coordinated clothes, in picture perfect locations.  But they will always be perfectly us.  Dabbing and catalogue poses and all.  And that is worth fighting for in my book.

The Me + Mine Project - Dear Beautiful
creating an adult only space

My dream adult-only space

Most parents know that feeling when your children are finally in bed, and quiet, and you can breathe a sigh of relief as you sink into the sofa.  The problem in my house is that the sofa is in the lounge, which also doubles as a play room for the children.  So the view from the sofa into which I’ve sunk is often of toys, and half-finished drawings and school bags and so on.

Not quite as relaxing as I would like.

I dream one day of having enough space in our house to have an adult only room.  A lounge completely free of toys and games and crayons and the like.  Well, that was the dream, until Boo Roo and Tigger too planted the seeds for an even better dream.  They’ve teamed up with Tiger Sheds and challenged bloggers to dream up their ideal adult-only space based around the gorgeous sheds and cabins available from Tiger Sheds.

My child-free lounge dream seems like nothing now, compared to the idea of a whole wooden cabin in the back garden, decorated to be a completely adult-only space to relax in.

So now I have this new and improved dream for my child-free space – a Bengal corner cabin from Tiger Sheds in the garden.

wood cabin

I love the idea of it being tucked into a corner of the garden.  It just feels extra cosy, which is the vibe I would go for with it.

With this being a completely child-free zone, I would furnish it with nice things that just wouldn’t be safe around the children.  Luke Danes was right, children always have jam hands, even if there’s not any jam in the house.  So my adult-only space would have gorgeous furniture like this patchwork knit chair.

‘Bevis’ Patchwork Knit Chair by Melanie Porter at not on the high street.

It just looks so soft and comfortable, and in a colour that just wouldn’t be safe around jam hands!

To really cosy things up I would have a blanket box overflowing with throws and blankets.  Although I would have one old faithful that would be used more than the others, like this gorgeous crocheted blanket that my friend has for sale in her etsy shop.

Crocheted blanket by JoJoDesignsOnline at Etsy

I love the idea of filling this little space with things like that, one of a kind pieces that make it all a little bit special.

Now, I would love to claim that this little cabin of mine would be a place I would go in the evenings to read and be all highbrow.  But really, I would set it up with electricity so I could put a tv and dvd player in and spend a few hours out there watching old boxsets like Gilmore Girls, or Alias, or even Dawsons Creek.

This would be a place for me to really switch off and those kind of shows that I have seen over and over again are just perfect easy viewing.

To create the extra cosy vibe to relax in I would have soft, low lighting from a couple of simple table lamps and some fairy lights draped around the place.

These fairy light orbs from not on the high street would be absolutely perfect dotted around the cabin, giving off that pretty little glow.

The last thing I would add is either a coffee machine or a kettle for making plenty of hot drinks to last me the evening.

Now, I’m aware that I’ve not mentioned Steve in any of this.

He would of course be welcome to come and relax in my cabin with me, but as this is my dream space I really am imagining it as MY cabin!  He would most likely have one of his own in the other corner of the garden, hooked up to the wifi so he could work on his 3D design projects undisturbed and with a fridge full of different ales for him to enjoy while he worked.

What would your ideal adult-only space be like?

keeping safe roads winter

Keeping safe on the roads this winter

Sponsored post.

The weather is definitely starting to turn colder and winter will be in full swing before we know it.

With Christmas coming up lots of people will be planning long drives to visit friends and relatives.  Even if you’re not planning on driving that far, it’s still really important to start getting prepared for potentially tricky driving conditions.

Here are some things you can do to make sure you stay safe on the roads this winter.

Keeping safe on the roads this winter

Prepare the car

  • Make sure there is plenty of fuel in the car.  You never know when you might get held up due to the weather conditions, or have to sit with the engine running to warm up the car and clear the windscreen.
  • Keep a set of supplies in the car that includes an ice scraper, some de-icer, a torch, a warm hat and gloves, some water and a first aid kit.  If you are travelling further afield then also pop some blankets, some snacks and a flask of something warm to drink in the car.
  • Consider taking the car for a safety check if you’re planning a long journey.  At the very least check your tyre treads and the fluid levels before you leave.  You might also want to check your wiper blades and replace them if necessary.  You can find a useful how-to guide for this on cars.com, along with some other helpful guides on car maintenance.

Prepare yourself

  • Make sure your mobile is charged before you head out.  If you can, take a charger with you, either one that plugs into the car or a portable power pack.
  • Check the weather forecast to make sure you’re up to date with the driving conditions you’ll be dealing with.
  • Plan your journey and make sure you allow extra time to get to where you’re going.

Winter driving advice

  • Keep an eye on your speed.  When it’s icy out go that little bit slower than you normally would, and keep more of a distance between you and the car in front.
  • On really cold days be aware that the roads might still be icy, even if the surrounding paths and buildings seem to have thawed out.
  • If you’re on a long journey tune into local radio stations as you go to keep up to date on weather and travel news.

The most important thing with Winter driving is to just be aware, and be careful.

Keep an eye on the weather forecast and if conditions are really bad then only drive if you absolutely have to.

Living Arrows 2017 – 48/52

I’ve written before about one of the differences between my two children.

Nerys likes to get outside as much as possible, she seems to have a real need to get out of the house and into some fresh air.

Rhys on the other hand is quite happy to stay in.  He loves days at home, when he can stay in his pyjamas if he wants to because we don’t have to go anywhere.

It can be a bit of a challenge at times, trying to keep them both happy.  Although, what I’ve come to realise is that while Rhys may put up a fight and complain about going out before we go, once we’re actually out he has a great time.

So yesterday, despite his protests that he wanted to stay at home after his swimming lesson, we wrapped up warm and headed out to Swansea bay for a walk on the beach.

And surprise surprise, he didn’t complain once while we were out!

living arrows

He dug in the sand with his stick, fascinated to see the water rising up the surface as he wiggled the sand around.

He spent ages searching along the tideline for interesting rocks to add to the collection he’s started building.  I think we have a budding geologist on our hands, he’s fascinated by it all at the moment.

Not once did he complain about being cold, or bored, or wanting to just go home.

A lot of the time my approach to parenting is to be led by my children, to follow their lead, to allow their interests and personalities and needs determine what we do and how we do it.

There are times though, when I know that we actually know better than they do what they need and what they want.  So some days, like yesterday, we will insist on things like all of us going out for a breath of fresh air together.  Because despite the claims to the contrary, Rhys really does enjoy being out.  He just sometimes needs a bit of a push to get out there!

christmas markets uk

The best Christmas markets to visit in the UK

I’ve been in denial about it up till now, but Christmas really is coming.

It will be here before I know it, and I think it’s almost time to start getting into the festive spirit.  One of my favourite things to do to start feeling Christmassy is to head into Swansea town centre and wander round the Christmas market that pops up every year.

All around the UK Christmas markets are appearing, with amazing things to buy to get your presents for everyone sorted, as well as delicious food and drink to get you feeling all festive.

If there’s not a market close to you then there’s no need to worry, Stagecoach offer cheap bus fares to all sorts of towns so you don’t have to miss out.

Here are some of the best Christmas markets to visit in the UK.

The best Christmas markets to visit in the UK Newcastle upon Tyne

Starting up north, there’s the Christmas market that hits Grey Street and turns Newcastle upon Tyne into a festive wonderland.

This market welcomes stall holders from all across Europe so there’s a fab range of things to buy, perfect for everyone on your present list.  There’s always a great festive atmosphere and you can even test out your skating skills at the ice rink in Times Square.

Open: 11th December – 17th December

Birmingham

Birmingham has been home to a brilliant German Christmas market for 12 years now.

It’s held in Victoria Square, with Christmas lights illuminating the fountain creating the perfect festive home for the 180 stalls that pop up every year.  You can get everything from beautiful jewellery to handmade toys, and enjoy browsing all the stalls with a marshmallow-topped hot chocolate in your hand.

Open: 17th November – 29th December

Exeter

You can’t miss the Christmas market in Exeter, just head for the Cathedral and you’ll find all the wooden huts selling products from all round the world.

This year there’s an extra something on offer too.  The Exeter Christmas market is adding a bandstand where local bands, singers and choirs will entertain the crowds in the evenings.

In case all that’s not enough for you, there are also Christmas markets in Castle street and Fore street, so if you’re a really big fan Exeter might be the perfect city for you to visit.

Open: 16th November – 17th December

Lincoln

If you fancy combining a festive market with some historic culture then Lincoln is a great choice.

There are over 280 stalls that are overlooked by the iconic castle and the cathedral, which combine to make this a really magical place to visit for the whole family.

What’s really lovely about the market in Lincoln is that new, seasonal stalls are put up and the established shops along the cobbled streets also come outside to sell their products too.  To really make a visit here fun you can take a ride on the big wheel or one of the other fairground rides.  But be quick because this market doesn’t stick around for long!

Open: 7th December – 10th December

London

If you really want to go all out this Christmas then head to London and visit the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park.

There is so much on offer here from ice skating, to the circus, to Cinderella on Ice.  There really is something for everyone.  But it’s always worth booking in advance to make sure you don’t miss out because all the attractions are always in high demand.

Open: 17th November – 1st January

So there you have it, some of the best Christmas markets to visit in the UK this year.  Which market are you planning on heading to?
