Living Arrows 2017 – 51/52

You know it’s been another funny old week when you get to Sunday evening and realise you’ve not really taken any photos for Living Arrows that week.

And so, just before the children go to bed you ask one of them to let you snap a quick photo.  And you get this.

living arrows

Pretty standard for a six year old at bedtime I suppose!

We actually had a pretty busy week last week, as we gear up for the end of term and for Christmas.

Both children had their Christmas concerts at school and they both really did us proud.  I would love to have photos from the concerts to share for this week’s post, but I didn’t manage to get any of just them.  I also made a conscious decision this year to spend more time just watching the concerts, rather than trying to record them.  To be more present and just really enjoy the moment of seeing my children on the stage, giving it their all!

Rhys’ concert was all about Christmas around the world and it was so much fun.

He chose to be an angel, and got to be the centre of attention at one point, pulling numbers out of a box to decide which countries they would visit as part of the play.

Nerys’ class kept things a bit more simple and sang a collection of Christmas songs while their teacher narrated the nativity story.

There were almost 90 children, all aged either three or four and they were amazing.  Not a single child cried, no one had to be taken off stage for cuddles, they all just sang their hearts out.  I think half the mums in the audience were in tears though, what is it about little ones performing Christmas concerts that makes us get so emotional?!

Now we’re in the final countdown, the last week of term before a well-deserved break for Christmas.

The children have worked so hard this term, they are so ready for a bit of time to just relax and have some fun!

things to do after shouting children

3 things to do after you shout at your children

I would love to say I never do it.  That I am a constantly calm mum, who never ever raises her voice at her children.  But that would be a complete and utter lie.  So here’s the truth.

I shout.

I try so hard not to, and I feel awful every time I do it.  But I do shout at my children.  And from the conversations I have with my friends outside the school gates I know I’m not the only one who does it.

The thing is, we’re all human.

We slip up, we get frustrated, and we shout.  And part of me thinks it’s good for our children to see that we’re not perfect and that we do lose control at times.  What really matters more than the shouting itself, is what we do afterwards.

So there are 3 things I try to remember to do in the moments after I’ve shouted.

3 things to do after you shout at your children

1. Say sorry.

This is always the first step for me.

I take some deep breaths, get down to my children’s eye level if I can and say I’m sorry for shouting.

Then I’ll explain why I got so angry and why I ended up shouting.

I think it’s important to explain what it was about their actions that led to me shouting, to try and avoid the same thing happening in the future.  But it’s also important to explain the emotions I was feeling at the time.  To let them know that we all feel these big emotions, and to give them the words to be able to discuss their own feelings of anger and frustration.

The apology bit is really key for me though.

As well as letting them know that I’m sorry for shouting, it also lets them know that I’m human, that I don’t always handle things perfectly.

2. Reconnect.

If my children are upset after I’ve shouted then I’ll give them a big hug to reassure them that everything is ok.

Studies have found that children need 5 positive interactions for ever 1 negative one, so it’s important to reconnect with them after shouting.  You don’t have to do anything huge, just give them your time and attention.  Put down your phone and have a chat with them about their day.  Get down on the floor and play with them for a bit.  Sit on the sofa together and read a book.

Just do something positive to balance the scales a bit and get your day back on track.

3. Let it go.

I don’t mean forget it ever happened exactly, but forgive yourself for doing it and move on.

None of us are perfect as parents.  We all slip up and make mistakes.  We all have days when we’re tired and stressed and we snap.

Don’t let it taint the rest of your day with your family.  Take a minute to calm down, talk it over with your children, have a big hug and then let it go.

So, next time you reach boiling point and shout, don’t beat yourself up about it too much.  Just say sorry, reconnect and let it go.  And remember that we’re all just doing our best as parents.

Do you shout more than you like, or are you generally a calm and in-control kind of parent?  What do you do to put things right with your children if and when you do shout at them?

cancer care parcel

Thoughtful gifts from Cancer Care Parcel

When someone you love is diagnosed with cancer it can be so hard to know what to say and what to do.

Quite often our natural instinct is to buy them something, a present of some kind to show that you care and that you’re thinking of them.  But it can be really tricky to know what exactly to send.

This was exactly the issue that Dr Shara Cohen set out to tackle when she set up Cancer Care Parcels.

Thoughtful gifts from Cancer Care Parcel

Dr Cohen was diagnosed with cancer back in 2013, and having gone through treatment herself she understands some of the needs of cancer patients.

She created cancer care parcels both as a way for those living with cancer to bring a bit of calm back into their lives, and also as a way for friends and relatives to buy gifts for loved ones going through treatment when they might otherwise have no idea what to get.

There are various hampers available on from Cancer Care Parcels, so no matter who you’re buying for, or what stage of treatment they’re at, you’ll be able to find something suitable.

I was very kindly sent the little monkey mighty big hamper, for childhood cancer patients, to review.

This huge box is jam packed with lovely gifts for children to give them a bit of a boost while they go through treatment.

The hamper includes:

  • A snugly soft blanket.  Perfect for wrapping up in during treatment when little hands and feet can get cold.  It’s also perfect for creating a cosy spot to rest in either in hospital or at home.
  • A fun monkey pillow.  This is really great for adding a bit of comfort to a hospital bed or a sofa at home, and is also a fun little friend to play with!

  • A handwarmer.  With its cute little fox design, this reusable handwarmer is great for using during treatment to warm up little hands.
  • Soft and snugly gloves.  If they really feel the cold then these lovely soft gloves will be a real treat for them to slip on.

  • A fun monkey backpack.  For carrying all their things to appointments and for hospital stays, this backpack is a great size for keeping everything together.
  • A monkey water bottle.  Children don’t always want to drink as much water as they should, but this monkey water bottle makes the process much more fun!  And what’s really great about it is that is collapses down when it’s empty so it’s really easy to slip in a bag.
  • A woven cool bag.  Perfect for taking small meals and snacks along to appointments, or for keeping things fresh and cool by their bedside.

  • Card game.  Perfect for slipping into a bag to keep children entertained in waiting rooms and while stuck in bed.
  • A bouncy ball.  For when they’re feeling a bit more energetic and want something to chase around.
  • Picture rub art.  A lovely quiet craft activity to keep them occupied when resting at home or in hospital.

cancer care parcel fun and games

  • A notebook and coloured pencils.  For doodling, drawing, and writing down their thoughts and feelings.

  • A powerbank.  For charging various electronic devices, perfect for hospital stays or for keeping them entertained at home.
  • Gold earphones.  Whether they like listening to music or watching random videos on YouTube, with these they can do what they like without disturbing other people in waiting rooms.

  • Sea bands.  Cancer treatment can often leave people feeling sick, and these acupressure wristbands are brilliant at relieving nausea.  They’re also useful for travel sickness if you have to go any distance in the car to get to appointments.
  • Vaseline.  For soothing dry lips.

The hamper also contains:

  • A battery operated bedside light.  This is so pretty and soothing, as it’s a clear bottle shaped lamp with star-shaped lights inside.  There are batteries included in the hamper too, so there’s no need to worry about that.
  • Catch-able bubbles.  For a bit of fun, these bubbles don’t pop, and instead stay on your hands and clothes.  They’re a great way of distracting young children.
  • Glow stick.  Another little item that’s just for fun, to lighten up a stay in hospital or for playing with under blankets at home.
  • Peppermint teabags.  Great for easing feelings of nausea during treatment, and also soothing for parents and carers.
  • Tissues and wipes.
  • Wind up mini fan.  On hot days and on stuffy hospital wards this little fan is great for cooling down.  It’s powered by a handle on the side, and is surprisingly effective!
  • USB light.  Plugs straight into the USB port of any device, or can be plugged into the power bank from the hamper.  Perfect for a spot of reading in bed.

This hamper really is packed with things to bring a bit of comfort and joy to a child going through cancer treatment.

It costs £119.99, while the contents all together are worth £139.38.

I really do think it would be appreciated by any child living with cancer, as there are so many lovely and useful items included.  The mix of practical and fun pieces is just right, and everything included is really lovely quality too.

All the hampers by Cancer Care Parcel have been so well thought out, they really do take some of the worry out of knowing what to send to bring a bit of comfort to loved ones after a cancer diagnosis.

personalised books librio tree key and me

Beautiful personalised books from Librio

Back in September I took a deep breath and headed off to London for my first big blogging conference – BML17.

It was a really great experience for me; I learnt a lot and, possibly even more importantly, I met some really lovely people.

One of the people I got chatting to was Ed from a company called Librio who create personalised books for children.  He talked about these books with so much excitement, it was contagious, and so when he offered to send me a book for each of my children to review I said yes straight away.

Beautiful personalised books from Librio

As soon as I opened the box I could see why Ed was so passionate about the books Librio make; they really are stunning.

It sounds a bit strange to say, but they feel really nice in your hands!  So as soon as you pick them up you can tell they’re quality books that will stand the test of time.

One thing that really stood out to me with Librio’s books is the fact that you can really personalise the illustrations, so the child in the book actually looks quite similar to your child.

Here’s what Nerys and Rhys look like in their books.

librio personalised books

Other than the fact that Rhys’ hair is a bit lighter in real life I think the likeness is really pretty good!

When you go to create your own book on the Librio website, you can choose the child’s gender, skin colour, eye colour, hair style and hair colour.  So you really can create a character that looks as much like your child as possible which I think is such a nice touch.

Once you’ve made your choices to personalise the book with your child’s name and appearance you can see a preview of how the finished book will look.  If you’re happy you can go ahead and place your order.  It’s a really quick and easy process but the end result is such a thoughtful present that any child would absolutely love.

Coming back to the illustrations in the book, they are all just gorgeous, I really love the style they’ve gone for.

They’re vibrant and colourful, but have a sort of gentleness to them that I find really appealing.

librio personalised childrens books

The story itself is great too.

It’s called “The tree, the key and me” and it’s a great adventure story for little ones, about a magical forest that is losing all its colour thanks to a witch who keeps getting her spells wrong.

Your child gets to be the hero of the story and help bring the colour back and put everything right.  I do really love this idea of your child being the hero of their own story, rather than always reading about other people saving the day!

This is part of the philosophy behind Librio.  In fact there’s a great little poem on their website that tells the story of how the company came about, and one of the verses reads:

If your child looks at books on their shelves,
they see stories of dragons and elves.
Imagine the joy
of your girl, of your boy
if the hero is their little selves.

There seems to be a real passion behind what Librio do.  It’s not just about making books, it’s so much more than that.

They’re committed to promoting a love of reading in all children, and so for every book they sell they give £1 to further literacy in local communities in the UK, Australia and Europe.  They also plant a tree through Trees for the Future for every book they sell, which I think is such a lovely idea.

And the gorgeously tactile paper that the books are printed on?  It’s 100% recycled FSC certified paper.

If you’re looking for a personalised present for a child in your life, I would highly recommend one of these books from Librio.

The story is great, the illustrations are beautiful and you can feel good buying from them knowing that you’ll be helping them to do a lot of good around the world!

save money Christmas

Saving money in the run up to Christmas

This time of year it’s so easy to spend (a lot) more money than we planned to.

There are so many presents to buy, cards to post, decorations to replace and food to stock up on.  It’s all too easy for costs to creep up and get ever so slightly out of control.

There are still some things you can do though, to save a bit of money in the run up to Christmas.  Even with just a few weeks to go, it’s not too late to make some savings.

save money at christmas

  • If you’re planning on posting Christmas cards to friends and family you can save a bit of money by getting them all ready to post before the 20th December and sending them 2nd class instead of 1st.  It might not seem like much but if you’re sending a big stack of cards then those pennies do add up.

  • You could even go a step further and send email cards instead, if you know that your friends and family won’t be too bothered by not receiving a physical card from you.

  • If you’ll be travelling by train to visit people this Christmas then get online and book your tickets as soon as possible.  You should still be able to get cheaper prices on advance tickets.  Even better, think about taking the coach instead, it’s quite often a fair bit cheaper.

  • Set a budget for presents.  If you have a lot of nieces and nephews to buy presents for then it’s a great idea to set a budget for how much you and your siblings will spend on each other’s children.  You could also arrange to do a Secret Santa with the adults instead of buying presents for each individual person.

  • As much as we know Christmas is coming each year, it so often seems to catch us off guard.  And sometimes, no matter how prepared we are, something will happen that we just can’t be prepared for.  Like the boiler breaking down, or the oven dying when you have a huge turkey to cook.  When something like this happens you can still save some money by using websites that find the best deals for you.  Whether you need a cheap tumble dryer to relieve your laundry woes, or a great deal on a microwave to make cooking easier over Christmas then these sites are a great place to start.

  • For anything you do buy this year, check around to get the best price first and see if there are any offers for the item on cashback websites.  While getting cashback on the things you buy won’t save you money exactly, every little helps and you can always put the cashback money into a savings account ready for next Christmas!

Hopefully there are some ideas here that will help you keep your spending under control this Christmas.

It’s really all about taking a little bit of time to check out all your options before you buy anything, making sure that you’re going for the best value option and thinking about what you actually need to buy.

Living Arrows 2017 – 50/52

Nerys is going through a bit of a funny phase at the moment.

One minute she’ll be telling me what a big girl she is, and how she can’t wait to be a grown up like me.  Then the next minute she’ll be pretending to be a baby, speaking gibberish in a high pitched voice.

As part of this ‘baby’ game, she’s started playing with the washing basket, climbing in there with a cushion and her blanket and calling it her crib.

living arrows

To be fair, she looks really quite comfy when she’s in there!

I think maybe she is just feeling a bit uncertain at the moment.  She really does want to be a big girl and do big girl things.  But at the same time I think she still wants to hold on to her role as the baby.

The last few months have been a big adjustment for her as she’s settled into the nursery class at school.

She’s learning how to write her letters and her numbers.  She’s learning all sorts of social skills and how to behave in the school environment.

She’s coped with it all so well, but I think at times she needs to step back from that all and just be the baby again for a bit.

I think we can all relate to that a bit can’t we?

I know there are times when I just want to curl up with a cushion and a blanket and have someone else take care of me for a while!

Christmas crafting with Vision Direct

We love getting crafty in our house.

There’s a big cardboard box stashed under a table in the lounge that is almost overflowing now with art and craft supplies, and the children love pulling it out and getting creative, making whatever they fancy from the contents.

So we were all rather excited when this box arrived from Vision Direct with new supplies to get creative with for Christmas!

vision direct christmas craft competition

Vision Direct have got a really fun competition running at the moment, where you can get crafty turning old boxes into Christmas trees for a chance to win £250 in Amazon vouchers.

They sent us this little box of crafty bits and pieces so that we could have a go and see how easy and fun it is to do!

vision direct christmas craft competition 2

There was a postcard in the box with templates for the Christmas tree, but you can also download templates in a few different sizes from the Vision Direct website.

I didn’t want to cut up my postcard (in case I wanted to photograph it again – blogger problems!) so I traced the templates on to a piece of paper and then cut them out.  Then I flattened the box a bit and drew round the templates on part of it, then cut the tree shapes out.

vision direct christmas craft 3

Then the fun part started!

I found the perfect green mulberry paper in my craft stash, that was just the right shade of green and even had strands of gold running through it.  I covered the tree shapes in glue and stuck the paper to each side, then trimmed around the edges and left them to dry.

vision direct christmas craft 4

Once the glue was properly dry we gathered the materials we wanted to use to decorate the trees.

Nerys and I decided to keep our trees quite simple, and just used some glitter glue, little pom poms and shiny Christmas confetti pieces.

vision direct christmas craft 4 (2)

I thought it might be a little bit fiddly for Nerys at times, but she actually did really well sticking the little pieces on to the trees.

If you’re making a tree yourself to enter in the competition, then you can get as creative as you like at this stage.

You can keep your tree on the minimalist side like we did, or you can go all out and cover it in glitter and sparkles and stickers and all sorts!

vision direct christmas craft 6

The hardest part of making these with Nerys was keeping her distracted while the two halves were drying, because she was just desperate to put them together and see the finished tree!

Luckily the kind people at Vision Direct had slipped a few chocolate treats in the box with the craft supplies, so I made use of those to keep Nerys happy.

vision direct christmas craft 7

The final stage of making our Christmas creations was slotting the two halves of the trees together.

This was nice and easy to do thanks to the lines marked on the templates.  And here are our end results.  Not too shabby!

vision direct christmas craft 9

Our trees are now standing proudly on our mantelpiece, and they look great alongside our other decorations!

If you’re feeling inspired now and fancy having a go yourself you can head to Vision Direct and download the tree templates from there.  Once your tree is complete you just need to share a photo of it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtags #christmascrafted and #visiondirectuk.

Have fun and good luck!
