child eating rustlers chicken burger

Trying new flavours with the Rustlers burger hacking challenge

In their own different ways, both my children can be quite picky eaters.

They have their favourite foods that they would quite happily have for every meal.  For Rhys it’s sandwiches and for Nerys it’s a plate of cheesy pasta.  If you ask them what they would like for dinner, you can pretty much guarantee that those will be the foods they ask for.

For a long time it was hard to get Rhys to eat different foods, but we’re coming out the other side of it now.  He’s started to ask to try new things which is just amazing for him.  Even if he does still pull the same ‘new food’ face that he’s pulled since he was a baby.  It’s brilliant, he looks slightly disgusted when he tries something new, but will then smile and tell you he really likes it!

The most recent thing he’s asked to try is burgers in buns, so it was great timing when we were invited to take part in the Rustlers burger hacking challenge recently.

rustlers southern fried chicken burgers

The challenge is all about finding fun ways to ‘hack’ your Rustlers burgers, to make a quick and easy meal for your family that’s perfect for busy weekends.

We got some southern fried chicken burgers for the children to try for lunch on Sunday, after Rhys had his swimming lesson.  I also bought some beef burgers for me and Steve, with the idea being that Rhys and Nerys could then try a bite of those as well, seeing as we were trying new things that day!

One of the things that can be really frustrating if you have a picky eater is spending a lot of time cooking a meal, just for your child to take a tiny bite and then refuse to eat any more.

So what I really loved about taking part in this challenge was the fact that the burgers cook in just over a minute in the microwave.  No fuss.  No feeling like I’ve wasted a lot of time if the children didn’t like them.

You can put the burger in the bun and cook it all together in the microwave, but I tend to find that the bun feels a bit soggy when you do it that way.  So I cooked the burger on it’s own in the microwave and popped the bun in the toaster for about 30 seconds to warm it through.

We did find that the chicken burgers were a bit on the tough side, so I’m not sure if I adjusted the cooking time quite right, or if our microwave is more powerful than standard.  Either way, the children didn’t seem to mind at all.  I might just try adjusting the cooking time a bit more if I make these burgers again.

rustlers southern fried chicken burger hacking challenge

The southern fried chicken burgers come with a little sachet of black pepper mayo, which we left off as the children don’t really like peppery things yet.  But we didn’t want to just give them plain burgers so we offered them some healthy toppings to put on them.

We put little bowls of iceberg lettuce and cucumber on the table so that the children could add as much or as little as they wanted to their chicken burgers.

Rhys is a big cucumber fan so put a couple of slices on his burger, along with a good handful of lettuce.  Nerys is like her dad and doesn’t like cucumber at all, so she chose to just put some lettuce on hers.

Rustlers burger hack lettuce cucumber

We also decided to add some tasty sides to our burgers to fill us up nicely ready for a chilly afternoon at the park.

I kept things quite classic with some ready made coleslaw and some homemade sweet potato fries.

Rustlers burger hack coleslaw sweet potato chips

My husband in particular really loves these sweet potato fries, and they’re nice and easy to make and are a great alternative to normal oven chips.

If you want to try them yourself at home, here’s how I make them:

  1. Preheat the oven to about 180 degrees.
  2. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut the knobbly ends off.
  3. Cut them into chips or wedges.  Try and make them all a similar size if you can.
  4. Boil them in a pan of water for about 10 minutes.
  5. Drain the chips and then pop back in the saucepan.
  6. Add some oil and mixed herbs and give the pan a shake to coat all the chips.  We also like to add some sweet chilli sauce to ours at this stage, but left them out when we made them for the children because neither of them are really fans of spice/heat yet!
  7. Tip the chips onto a baking tray and cook in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes.
  8. Enjoy!

Overall, the whole challenge was a huge success for us.

Rhys declared his burger, complete with cucumber and lettuce, the tastiest thing ever.  So I think we’ll be adding chicken burgers to the menu from now on!  He even tried a few of the sweet potato fries and said he liked those too, although I think he still prefers normal chips at the moment.

Nerys ate about half of her burger, with some lettuce on it and a bit more on the side, which Steve and I were quite happy with as she quite often will only eat a small amount of new foods that she tries.

Rustlers southern fried chicken burger hack

For those busy weekends when it feels like you don’t have time to stop between swimming lessons and birthday parties and football matches and so on, these little burgers are a great option for a quick family meal.

They’re made with good quality chicken, and marinated with a tasty southern fried breadcrumb and can be really easily personalised with toppings to suit different tastes.

And for us they were a perfect way for the children to try out some new flavours and discover some new foods.

Snuggly Rascals children’s headphones review

As a general rule we’re quite relaxed about screen-time in our house.

We don’t really set any strict limits for the children, knowing that they tend to naturally move on to another activity after a while.  So both children do spend time each day playing on the ipad or the computer, and watching videos on YouTube.

I’m quite happy for them to watch random videos of other people’s children opening blind bags and playing with toys, but honestly I don’t always want to hear those videos.  Especially if I’m trying to get some work done, or watch a bit of Sunday Brunch on the tv!

So I was really pleased when we were offered the chance to review a pair of comfy children’s headphones from Snuggly Rascals.

Rhys has got a pair of pretty cool headphones that he wears when I’m not up for listening to the gaming videos he watches on YouTube, but Nerys didn’t have any of her own.

So she was so excited when these arrived in the post, and luckily she was happy with the Unicorn design that I chose for her.

There were eight designs to choose from: unicorn, monster, penguin, cat, plane, giraffe, piggy and chicken and it was actually quite a tough decision to make!  They’re all really cute designs, and a nice variety to suit different ages and tastes.

snuggly rascals headphones in box

The headphones came in a sturdy little box with a window so you could see the cute unicorn design straight away.  The main thing I noticed when I first picked up the box was how light it was, which was a great sign of how comfy they were likely to be.

snuggly rascals headphones in open box

Once we opened the box and took them out we were able to feel quite how soft and snuggly the headphones are – they really do feel lovely.

They’re made from a fleecy material which is machine washable, always a bonus!  You just take the little headphones out of the headband and the pop the headband in a normal wash, so there’s no need to worry about your child getting them grubby.

The headband secures in place around your child’s head with velcro which is great as they’re completely adjustable and can be used by any child of any age really easily.

When Nerys first tried them on to watch a video on my ipad she did complain that she couldn’t hear anything to start with.

I tried adjusting the band a bit but that didn’t make any difference, but then I realised that the little speaker parts of the headphones can move about inside the band as well as come out completely to wash the band.

So it was just a case of feeling for the speakers and moving them to just the right place by Nerys’ ears and then she could hear her video perfectly!

I really love the fact that the volume is limited on these headphones, so there’s no way she can turn them up too loud.  I think it’s great to have that peace of mind that her hearing is protected.

You can also feel good buying these for your child because Snuggly Rascals donate 10% of their gross profits to charity.

Nerys has been loving having her very own special headphones to wear when she plays on the ipad at home, and I think they would be really great for her to use in the car too if we go away anywhere.  They’re so light and because they’re made from fleece they can fold up nice and small too, so would easily fit in her backpack for a trip away.

I think we’ll be getting quite a bit of use out of these cute and cosy little headphones!

You can buy Snuggly Rascals headphones directly from their website – www.snugglyrascals.com – as well as from places like Amazon and Argos.

Disclaimer: we were sent a pair of Snuggly Rascals to test out for the purpose of this review, but all words, opinions and photos are my own.

Living Arrows 2018 – 6/52

After what seemed like endless rain throughout January, the first weekend of February brought a very welcome dose of sunshine.

We spent a quiet morning at home on Sunday, then after Rhys had his swimming lesson we popped out for a much needed blast of fresh air.  We only went as far as Victoria Park, and only for a short time, but the kids had a lot of fun.

living arrows

Nerys had a pretty good weekend all round actually, with a trip out to the park on Sunday and a fun few hours at a birthday party for one of the boys in her class on Saturday.

They had a bouncy castle in a hall for his party, which all the children absolutely loved.  It was so nice to watch Nerys running around and playing with her friends from school, like getting a little glimpse into what she’s like when I’m not there!

We did have a few tears though, when someone dressed as Spiderman appeared to entertain the children.

Nerys was happily bouncing away when she turned and saw him nearby and she just ran to me screaming, and wouldn’t get down from my lap again until he had moved a safe distance away.

There were one or two other children there who didn’t seem too keen on him either, and it does seem to be the way that children either adore seeing these characters in real life or they’re terrified of them.

Nerys wasn’t too sure about Father Christmas when we went to see him in December so I wasn’t too surprised by her reaction to Spiderman.  And to be fair, I’m not sure how I would react if I was happily playing on a bouncy castle and turned round to see someone in a costume like that, with their face hidden, standing behind me!

Are your children scared of things like this too, or do they love seeing their favourite characters in real life?

Valentine’s day gift guide 2018

Valentine’s day is just around the corner.

But if you’re feeling a bit stuck for something to buy the woman in your life this year, don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time to get her something she will love.  And there’s no need to spend a day wandering from shop to shop to find the perfect gift, you can just head straight to Debenhams to find everything you need.

I spent a fair bit of time browsing their huge selection of Valentine’s gift ideas and have chosen some bits that I personally would love to receive, to feel special and a bit more ‘me’ than ‘mummy’ for a change!

Valentine's Day Gift Guide 2018

A new handbag

I’m pretty sure that you can’t go wrong with buying the lady in your life a new handbag.

If she’s the type of girl who already has a big collection, then she clearly loves bags and would be thrilled with another one to add to the collection.  And if she’s more like me and only has one or two bags, then chances are she’s had them for years and would really appreciate a brand new one!

I really love this cross-body bag from Mantaray.

valentines day gift idea handbag debenhams

The navy is pretty classic and will go with most outfits, but the floral trim adds a lovely bit of extra colour and prettiness.

It’s a great everyday bag, with plenty of room for everything you need without being too huge.

Take a bit of time though to work out what sort of bag to buy for your partner.  If you’re still in the change-bag stage of parenting then a bigger shoulder bag could be a great option, as it could hold all her essentials and a few nappies and wipes for the baby.  If on the other hand she likes to head out in the evenings then a pretty clutch bag might be better, for her to relish the freedom of only needing to take her purse, phone and keys out with her!

A wallet

Along the same line, a smart or pretty new wallet would make me very happy.

It’s something I don’t think of replacing very often, so my current wallet is looking a little worse for wear now.  There are options here as well, from a wallet big enough for all her cash and cards and photos of the children, to a really pretty purse just big enough for a debit card and some cash for a night out.

Extra points will be given if you can manage to get a handbag and a purse that go well together!

A bottle of perfume

This is a classic Valentine’s day gift and one that has the potential to really make her feel special.

If you know she has a signature scent that she loves then this is an easy one, just stick with what you both know.  If you’re feeling braver you can pick out something new for her to try.

I’m wearing Gabrielle from Chanel at the moment and absolutely love it.

If you’re really not sure what type of perfume to buy for your partner then I would be tempted to spoil any potential surprise and just take her out shopping with you, so she can try a few and see what she likes.  Perfume can smell different on a person’s skin than it does on the little sample sticks you get in shops, so it’s normally best to let her spray a bit on her wrist and then let it sit for a bit before deciding which she likes best.

Lingerie

Another classic gift idea, this is really likely to be appreciated by any mother who has spent time recently in not-so-pretty nursing bras or who’s wearing bras that don’t quite fit her properly after having babies.

valentines day gift idea lingerie bra debenhams

If the idea of visiting the lingerie department gives you Father Ted flashbacks and makes you a bit nervous, don’t worry, because the best thing to do is go with your partner so she can be properly measured by the experts to make sure you then buy the right size bra for her.

Just put a bit of thought into the sort of lingerie you get.  Whether it’s a pretty t shirt bra for her to replace her current ‘everyday’ bra, or a complete set of sexy pieces for you both to enjoy on Valentine’s night, make sure you think about what she would like most!

A scented candle

If you’re just after a little something for Valentine’s day then a scented candle is a great option.

valentines day gift idea scented candle debenhams

There’s definitely something romantic about candlelight, so you can use this gift idea as a way to set the mood if you’re having a Valentine’s date night.

Or you can wrap a couple up with some bath bombs or a bottle of bubble bath and really spoil her by letting her shut herself away in the bathroom for a while with a few magazines or a good book!

Make up

I think most mums will tell you that they often feel tired, and feel like they look tired too.  So make up can be a bit of a necessity to feel a bit more human on the school run.  It can also be hard as a mum to treat ourselves to nice make up, so buying your partner a few bits for Valentine’s day would be a lovely idea.

valentines day gift idea make up debenhams

This touche eclat is a bit of a cult classic, and is a great way to brighten up her complexion and cover up those sleepless nights a bit.

And even if she doesn’t have much time in the mornings, just a quick swipe of eye shadow from this gorgeous palette will make a difference in her feeling a bit more put together.

I hope that this guide has given you some inspiration for finding the perfect gift this Valentine’s day.

And if there’s nothing on here that seems quite right, remember that you can’t go far wrong with a box of chocolates and a heartfelt message in a card!

Living Arrows 2018 – 5/52

Has January been a bit of washout for everyone, or is it just us here in Swansea that seem to have had rainy weekend after rainy weekend?

Even for a pluviophile like me it’s been a bit much to be honest!

Although that’s mainly down to the fact that it’s really restricted my photo opportunities, because I really don’t want to risk taking my big camera out in the wet.  So I was a bit cheeky and got Rhys to stay out in the rain after his swimming lesson yesterday for a few seconds, while I stood in the shelter of our hallway to snap a few photos for this week’s Living Arrows post.

living arrows

For a spontaneous and speedy photo session, I’m really happy with the results!

It feels like he’s shown three different sides of his personality in the pictures, which I love considering the fact that they were taken in quick succession.

More than anything though I just love the fact that he doesn’t look in the slightest bit bothered by the rain.  Last week I shared some photos of Nerys from our rainy walk in the park, and mentioned how she really quite likes being out in the wet.

Rhys on the other hand is often a bit more reluctant to go out when it’s raining.  But this weekend it was as if he didn’t even notice how soggy he was getting.

It’s a good thing really, that as a family we all quite like the rain, when we have months like this when Wales lives up to its reputation of being a particularly wet place!

Do your children like going out in the rain, or do you end up stuck in the house and going stir-crazy when the dark clouds gather and the rain just doesn’t stop?

valentines wreath

Fun and easy Valentine’s day wreath #BostikBloggers

I am thrilled to say that I’m going to be a Bostik Blogger again this year!

I had such good fun last year putting together a craft activity each month and am really looking forward to getting creative again this year.

Each month we have a different theme to build a craft activity around, and the first theme of 2018 is Valentine’s day.

Now I’ll be honest here and admit that my husband and I have never really ‘done’ Valentine’s day.  I think we maybe exchanged cards the first year we were dating but since then the day sort of passes us by each year.

This year though, I’m focusing on joy, and so I feel much more like celebrating any and every special occasion going.

So the craft activity I’ve chosen for this month is a Valentine’s wreath to hang up at home and help get us all into the spirit of things.

valentines day wreath craft activity with paper hearts

What you’ll need

  • A piece of cardboard
  • Something round to draw around
  • Pieces of patterned/coloured paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue/glue dots
  • Optional – love-themed stickers and embellishments

valentines day wreath what you need

What you do

Find two circular items to draw around on your piece of cardboard, to make the base for your wreath.  I used mixing bowls for mine.  Or if you still have your old maths kit at home you can use a compass to draw 2 circles, one inside the other.

Then cut out the wreath base.

valentines day wreath cardboard circle base

Next draw a heart shape onto the spare bits of cardboard to use as a template.

valentines day wreath cardboard heart template

Draw around your heart template on the different pieces of coloured and patterned paper.  You can place the template onto your wreath base and move it around to work out roughly how many paper hearts you’ll need.

Cut out all your paper hearts.

valentines day wreath paper hearts

Using glue or glue dots, stick the paper hearts around your wreath base.  I kept all my hearts facing up the same way and just worked my way round the wreath from bottom to top sticking them down.  But have a play around with your hearts and see what you like best.

valentines day wreath craft paper hearts

Fill in any gaps or bits that look a little too plain for your liking with love-themed stickers or embellishments.

If you really want to go to town with your wreath you can get out the glue and glitter, or just keep it plain and simple if you’d rather.  That’s what I love about these kinds of crafts, you can so easily adapt them to suit your personal tastes.

valentines day wreath craft paper hearts stickers

Stick a loop of ribbon onto the back of the wreath so you can hang it up.  I used a small piece of tape to stick my ribbon on, but you could always use a stapler if you need to.

Or you could skip the ribbon completely and just use some blu-tak to stick your wreath up.

valentines day wreath hanging ribbon

And there you have it, a pretty Valentine’s themed wreath!

I’ll be hanging ours up in our hallway so we all feel the love as soon as we walk through the front door every day!

Do you ever put up any decorations as part of the Valentine’s day celebrations?

If you’re more like me and don’t tend to make a big fuss on the day, these lovely ideas for romantic valentine’s day dates at home might give you some inspiration for showing your partner how much you care without having to book a table at an expensive restaurant!

Living Arrows 2018 – 4/52

We had a bit of a washout of a weekend here in Swansea.

There was a bit of a break in the rain on Saturday afternoon, but we were all quite happy playing and working at home.  So after checking the forecast for Sunday and seeing more wet weather forecast, we decided we would wrap up and head out for a rainy walk in the park in the morning.

Which is exactly what we did.

We put Nerys in her rainsuit and the rest of us in coats and hats and off we went for a very soggy walk round Brynmill Park.

We were hoping to be able to feed the ducks in the park, but should have guessed really that the kiosk that sells the bird seed would be shut.

So we went to say hello to the ducks and the swans instead, then splashed through puddles the rest of the way round the park to the playground.

With everything being soaking wet Rhys was a bit limited on what he could do, but he impressed me and Steve (and himself) by braving the fireman’s pole by himself.  Nerys in her rainsuit was much more free to play on the slides and things, but was a bit wary after almost shooting off the end of one slide thanks to her slippery rainsuit!

We were all absolutely soaked, and pretty cold, by the time we got home but it was really nice to see the children not caring in the slightest about the rain.  Nerys in particular had a great time, she really loves sploshing in puddles!

It really is true though, isn’t it, that there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.
