8 years later

If you’ve read my blog before, you might know that I feel quite passionately about taking photos, and about making sure that I am in some of the photos that I take.

I’ve written posts about the photos we wish we’d taken and how sometimes, even if you might feel a bit shy or awkward about it, you should just take the damn photo.

So when I was in Kent last weekend visiting my family, I took the chance to get my parents and my siblings out in the garden together for a photo of the 5 of us.  And I’m really pleased I dragged everyone out there because, as far as we could remember, the last photo we took of the 5 of us together was taken about 8 years ago, at my oldest niece’s christening!

Family

I do still absolutely love this photo of all of us, everything about it makes me smile, and brings make lovely memories from that day.

But, I think we were long overdue an updated family photo.

So, I handed my camera over to that same niece who brought us together for the old photo, and she took this fabulous portrait for us.

8 years later, and our lives may have completely changed (that niece is now one of 7 Grandchildren for my parents!) but I don’t think we look all that different!

And look how colour coordinated we were, competely by chance – do you get the feeling that, as a family, we like the colour blue?!

I’m so pleased with how this photo turned out.  I think my niece did a brilliant job, and I love how happy we all look, especially considering the fact that this was taken in a hurry, 2 minutes before we had to head out so I could catch my coach back to Swansea!

This photo is top of my ‘photos-to-be-printed’ list now, because it represents so much.

It is happiness and joy and love.

This is exactly the family photo I want to be able to show to my children and my grandchildren in years to come.

As part of our bedtime routine we all get into bed and read a few stories together.

The other night Rhys and Nerys got impatient waiting for me so starting reading by themselves, and it was just such a lovely moment.  And I was so proud when I realised that Rhys was actually reading the book to Nerys; he’s learnt so much in the last year at school, it’s amazing!

He was reading ‘The dinosaur that pooped a rainbow’ to her, and as well as being proud of his reading ability, I was also really happy to see that Nerys is starting to get the hang of her colours too.

Next thing to work on is numbers I think, see if I can convince her that it doesn’t go 7, 8, 9, 12 which is what she insists is right at the moment!

So, tonsillitis is fun isn’t it?!

No, no it’s really not!

I used to get it a couple of times a year when I was younger, and then gradually I got it less and less.  But this past fortnight I’ve been hit again.  And it’s been blooming miserable.

I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done if I didn’t have my husband and my in-laws to help me out, because I basically just stopped.

Which meant that I didn’t get round to posting a Living Arrows photo last week.  So I’m playing catch up again and doing two weeks in one today.

First up is my wonderful, funny girl.  She was an absolute star when I really felt poorly; happily playing with her toys and watching Frozen so I could get some rest.  And this gorgeous smile of hers really did help cheer me up!

Secondly is my big boy, almost at the end of his first year of full-time school.  And this photo just sums up perfectly the way our afternoons often go after school.  The ipad balanced on his lap, playing random youtube videos of people opening toys, and legs covered in mud from playtime well-spent playing in the dirt.

Apparently colouring in pictures at 8 in the morning requires sunglasses.

This little one already knows what she wants (and what she doesn’t want!).  I love how her personality is coming through more and more every day; I’m fascinated seeing the person she’s becoming.

Living arrows – 23/52 and 24/52

I had a bit of a quiet week last week in terms of posting, because I’ve been busy working away behind the scenes making the epic move from Weebly to WordPress.  I think the hardest part is behind me now; I’m here, I’m happy and I’m ready to get stuck back in!

So this week I’m playing catch up and posting two living arrows photos in one.

The first is my big girl Nerys, caught in a quiet moment when I can almost convince myself she’s still my baby.  All wrapped up in a big towel after her bath.

Then moments after this was taken she burst into song, serenading the room with her raucous rendition of ‘let it go’ and the spell was broken!

And the other photo that brings me back up to date is this one of Rhys, taken at the weekend when we popped down for a walk on the beach just before teatime.

Between us Steve and I took quite a few photos of the kids on this quick beach visit, and when I was scrolling through them it really struck me how Rhys suddenly looks older.  I think his features are changing a little again.

My boy really is growing up fast, and I’m not sure I like it!  But, then, I see this photo, and his lovely long eye lashes that he’s had since he was born and I see my little baby.  He’s still in there.  I suppose he’ll always be there to me.

My turn, my turn

I try my best to take a headshot of my children at some point every day, so I have a little record of how they’re changing over the weeks, months and years.  And despite my best intentions to take the photos during the day, I inevitably forget and end up taking them at bedtime.

One night recently both children were really quite tired, so I was trying to just get their photos done quickly so we could get on with stories.  Nerys was being awkward though, and not wanting to look at the camera for me.  So I asked Rhys to come over to do his instead, which obviously made Nerys change her mind and want hers done.

So this is her, jumping in front of her brother to get her photo taken first.

I think this is a sign of things to come between these two!
