‘Show you were there’ round up (week one)

If you’ve visited my blog in the past week you may well have seen that I’ve set myself a challenge.

I’m trying to get in a photo every day this month.

This is the third year that I’ve done this, as part of my aim to make sure I exist in photos for my family.  And I’m trying to encourage other parents to get in more photos too.

I’m now at the end of the first week of my #showyouwerethere challenge for 2017, and here are the photos I have so far.

show-you-were-there

I’m pretty happy so far!  Considering it’s rained pretty much non-stop all week so we’ve not been out and about at all.

I quite like the variety I’ve managed to get in this week’s photos.  I don’t want to get the end of the month and have 31 pictures that all look the same.  I’m looking to capture portraits, moments and details.

Join in!

If you’d like to join in with me and jump in some photos either by yourself or with your loved ones then please do use #showyouwerethere on them over on instagram and I’ll go take a look.  I’m planning on sharing my favourites over here on my blog.

And if you’re a blogger reading this and you’d like to take part in a new guest post series about your favourite photo either of yourself or someone important to you, then please do sent me an email for more information – thisgloriouslife@gmail.com.

I’m looking to share stories of the photos we’re really happy that we are in or that we’ve taken, photos that mean something to you or that you think will mean something to your children in the future.  Or if you have a story about a photo you wish you’d taken that you’d like to share then give me a shout too.

In the meantime, check this post out if you need some tips on getting in more photos if you’ve not got anyone around to take them for you.

How to be in more photos when you don’t have anyone to take them for you

One of the biggest obstacles to being in more photos, is not having someone to take them for you.

But don’t let that stop you!

Don’t use that as an excuse to stay behind the camera.

Here are some ways you can make sure you exist in photos, even if you don’t have anyone to take them for you.

How to be in more photos

1. Take a selfie.

I’m starting off nice and simple!  One of the easiest ways to get in a photo is to take a classic selfie.

If you want to get in a photo with your children then you can either all squeeze in close for a photo, or you can pull out your selfie stick so you can fit a bit more in your pictures.  Come on, admit it, you do have a selfie stick don’t you!  I honestly thought they were a bit, I don’t know, embarrassing I suppose.  But then I tried one, and loved it!  They just open up so many possibilities when it comes to taking self portraits on your phone.

2. Get reflective.

The other old classic for getting in photos is to take them in the mirror.

Most of the photos I have of me when I was pregnant were taken in the mirror in our bedroom.  And while they’re nothing special photographically, they are so special to me and I’m so glad I took them.

mirror photos

You can make this more interesting though, by thinking outside your bathroom/bedroom.

Look for reflective surfaces that you can use when you’re out and about with your children.  Big puddles can be good!  Or shop windows, car wing mirrors, anything reflective will do!

3. Try a  tripod.

If you have one, a tripod can be really useful for getting yourself in more photos.

You can set the camera up on the tripod and then either use a remote trigger or the timer feature to take photos of yourself.

At the moment I tend to use the timer, mainly because I don’t know where our remote is!  It can take a while to get the shot just right doing it this way, so be prepared to take a few photos before you get it spot on.  But it is quite a bit of fun!

4. Improvise.

If you don’t have a tripod then you need to get inventive.

I’ve balanced my camera on piles of books, chairs, the kitchen work surface, all kinds of places.  For this family photo the camera was placed on a bag that was sitting in Nerys’ buggy.

If all else fails you can get some fab photos by simply putting your camera down on the floor!

5. Find someone.

If you’ve tried the ideas I’ve mentioned above and still aren’t quite happy with the photos you’re getting then you might want to find someone to help you.

I know, I know, the whole point of this post is that you don’t have someone to take photos of you!  But hear me out.  There are a few different ways you can find someone to take some photos for you.

Here are some options:

  • Ask a friend to come round and take some for you.  You can incorporate it into a playdate with your children!
  • If you’re a blogger reading this, then why not arrange a bit of a photo swap with another blogger in your area.  You can take it in turns to take photos of each other.
  • Hire a pro.  If you’re really serious about getting some amazing photos of yourself then look into hiring a professional photographer to take some for you.  If you take some time to look at various photographers’ websites you’re bound to find one with a style you like.
  • Ask a stranger.  This might feel a bit scary, but most people are more than happy to snap a quick photo for people if they ask.  You could try this if you want a photo of you with your children at the park, for example.  I’m pretty sure there would be other parents there who would be willing to help you out.

I really hope I’ve inspired you to take some action and get in some more photos.

If I have, then please do tag them with #ShowYouWereThere over on instagram and I’ll go and check them out!

Parents, we need to get in more photos – #showyouwerethere

Parents, can you do something for me?

I want you to grab your phone and/or your camera and scroll back through the photos you’ve taken recently.  And while you’re at it, take a look at the photos you’ve shared on instagram and facebook over the last few weeks.

How many of those photos are you in?

I would imagine that the answer is somewhere between ‘a few’ and ‘none at all’.

As parents we tend to be the ones behind the camera.  Recording every little detail of our children’s lives.  But so often there’s one huge thing missing from those photos.

Us.

I’ve written before about the photographer Sue Bryce and how she feels so strongly about the idea that we need to exist in photos for our loved ones.

She talks about this idea that we take all these photos of our children, but the ones they will love the most when they’re older are the ones of their parents.

“One day when you child is 40 years old, they will look at that photograph…and your child will treasure it more than any other photo they have seen of themselves.”

I’ve been taking this message on board and for the last 2 years I’ve spent the month of March taking a photo of myself every day.

I chose March because Mother’s day is in March.  And this feels like a good way for me to celebrate motherhood.  To celebrate my role as mummy, by making sure I exist in photos for my children.

The reason I do a photo a day for a whole month is because it pushes me.  It forces me to move past those feelings of worry about the fact that my hair needs washing and to just get on with it.  And while I may not love the way I look in every photo, I still LOVE every photo.  They capture moments between me and my children that would just exist in my memory otherwise.  My daughter won’t remember me sitting and playing on the carpet with her when she was 2 years old, but the photo I have of that moment will exist to show here I was there.

This will be the third year I tackle this challenge that I set myself.  And I would really love people to join in with me.  I don’t expect people to get in a photo every single day, but I really would love to see more parents in more photos.

I’ve been using a specific hashtag for my photos for a while and am now hoping to create a proper instagram community around it.

So if you have photos with you in, please do share them on instagram with #ShowYouWereThere.

I want to carry on getting in photos once March is over, once a week at least.  And I’ll be posting my favourites on my blog, along with the ones that I love that other people have shared over on instagram.

So if you’d like to feature in one of my round ups please do get using #ShowYouWereThere, with any photos that you’re in.  It can be you on your own, or with your family.  It can show your face, or not if you’d rather.  It can just be your hands holding your favourite mug, or your shoes next to your baby’s teeny ones.  Any photo that shows you were there.

New guest post series

If you’d like to get more involved then I have another plan up my sleeve!

I’m looking to start a guest post series featuring people’s favourite photos either of themselves, or of their parents (or someone else they love).

What I’m really hoping is for people to look beyond, “I love this photo of me because my make up looks perfect and I was at my skinniest”.  I’m hoping people will share photos that show moments that mean something to them.  A photo of them feeding their baby.  A moment of them laughing at a joke their toddler just made up.  A picture of their parents that they’re really pleased they took while they had the chance.

I wrote a post about why we need to take the damn photo, even if we feel a bit awkward about asking people to get in front of our camera.  I’ve dragged my parents out in the garden on a few occasions for photos, even though I knew they would rather not do it!  And I am so, so pleased that I did it.  My parents live a fair way away, so I love having these photos of them up in my house.  And in years to come, I will absolutely treasure them.

So, if you have a photo that you would like to share for this guest post series, please do send me an email at thisgloriouslife@gmail.com and I can send you some more information!

In the meantime, grab your phone or your camera and make sure there are some photos of you next time you scroll make through!

Me and mine – February 2017

Do you ever feel that there are some lessons in life that you have to learn over and over again?

For me, one lesson that I’m still learning is about time.

I’ve always been a procrastinator.  And I always seem to rushing out of the door at the last minute.

We call it last-minute-itis in my family, and I seem to be a chronic sufferer.

There’s a quote that is so fitting for me, and that I’m trying to learn from:

The problem is, you think you have time.

I do seem to have this underlying feeling that there is plenty of time.  And then time inevitably runs out, yet I’m always surprised when that happens!

Where am I going with this?

Well, it’s time for another post for the me and mine project.  A project I’ve started but failed to complete for the last 2 years.  The reason I keep letting the project slip is because I think I have time.  Every month I think I have plenty of time to get my family out in front of the camera.  But then the end of the month rolls around all too quickly, and it’s just not been done.

This month I was all geared up for taking photos this past weekend.  But the weather had other ideas.  It was wild out there.  Really not the weather for a nice family photo!

In the past I’ve let this trip me up.  I’ve abandoned the project all too easily.

But this year I want to see it through.  So here we are.  A last minute family photo.  Me and mine.

me and mine FB

It might not be the photo I wanted, or had in mind.  But you know what, I still like it.

When I look back at it I’ll remember the wildness of that evening.  Trying to get everyone on the bed and smiling, in between crazy swordfights and general before-bed mayhem.

I’m so glad we went for it, and I didn’t just give up on the project again, before it really got off the ground.  I need to remember to always choose a less-than-perfect photo of my family over no photo at all!

Living arrows 2017 – 9/52

3 years ago today, at 3 minutes past 6 in the morning, we became a family of 4.

We made our way to hospital at about 3am, and I never made it past triage.  They were monitoring the baby’s movements as I felt they had slowed down after I started feeling contractions.  It was only when I told Steve to fetch someone because I needed to push, at nearly 6am, that they examined me.  And found I was indeed ready to give birth.

Less than 10 minutes later she was here.

Our daughter.

At that point nameless.

By the end of the day though I was pretty sure what her name was.

A name we hadn’t even considered until the midwife came in and introduced herself, “Hi, I’m Nerys”.

Nerys.

Our Nerys.

I can’t imagine her with any other name now.  This one suits her perfectly.

Our beautiful, stubborn, silly, sweet Nerys.

3 years old.

She loves:

  • Looking at books and ‘reading’ along with me.
  • Topsy and Tim.
  • Doc McStuffins.
  • Going out.  To the park, the beach, the supermarket, anywhere.
  • Escalators.  If we ever go into town she gets very excited about the idea of going on the escalators!

She is:

  • About to start in the Rising 3s class at school.  She’s ready.  I’m not sure I am!
  • Really starting to assert herself.  We didn’t have the terrible twos that badly, but I think three is going to be an interesting year.  We’ve had some good foot-stamping recently!
  • A chocolate lover.  What can I say, she’s a girl after my own heart.
  • Creative.  She loves to paint, and draw, and do anything arty.  And she loves pretend play, making me cups of tea and building pretend sandcastles in the lounge.
  • Starting to look more like me, apparently.  I still can’t quite see it, but more people have started saying she looks like me which is lovely to hear!  She’s definitely still her Father’s daughter though, she is going to be tall like him!

3 years old.

I can’t quite get my head around it.

Living arrows 2017 – 8/52

I’ve always been fascinated by the nature vs nurture debate.

How much of our personality is dictated by our nature, and how much is formed by the environment we grow up in?

I think that nature plays the biggest part.

And I’m loving having a son and a daughter and seeing the differences in them.  We are raising them the same way, in the same environment.  We always tell them that there are no gender-specific toys.  That boys and girls can both play with whatever toys they want to.

Nerys though does seem to naturally lean towards stereotypical ‘girl’ things.

When she’s choosing a magazine in the shops she’ll often pick out the pinkest, sparkliest one there.

She’ll often tell you that her favourite colour is pink.

And she likes to have her hair ‘done’.

The other day I put her hair in plaited bunches for the first time.  Then I left her alone with her hair clips for a few minutes while I popped into the kitchen.

I came back to this.

living arrows project

Honestly, I was really quite impressed that she managed to get them all in there; hair clips can be really tricky!

She was concentrating so hard, carefully adding them one by one.

And she was so pleased to show me the results when I came back in from the kitchen.

I can’t wait to see what hairstyles we can come up with between us as she gets older.

And I’m looking forward to seeing if she grows up still liking pink and pretty things, or if that changes as she gets older.

The siblings project – February 2017

Last month I joined in with the Siblings project for the first time.

And, even though it’s still early days, I have a feeling I might manage this project every month this year.  Even if the photos aren’t exactly what I’d like them to be.

See, I saw some really gorgeous photos from other bloggers as part of the project last month.  And it made me really want to make an effort with my two this month.  To take the time to actually do a sort of mini photo shoot with them.  It was in my calendar to do it and everything.

But still, it just didn’t happen.  When I looked through our photos from the last month though, I found I did have a couple of pictures of the two of them together.

Not quite the set of photos I had imagined, but I’m happy nonetheless.

Siblings project 1

Despite all the coughs and colds we have managed to get out to the beach a few times in the last few weeks.  Rhys and Nerys both love it down there, even when it’s so cold you need your hoody hood up and your coat on over the top.

They both love digging in the sand, looking for treasure and building sandcastles.  For the most part they do this nicely together, but they do have their moments when they’d rather just do something by themselves for a bit.

siblings project 3

They are good friends at the moment though.

Nerys was at nursery today and was so excited to tell me that she had seen Rhys when they went out to play in the yard.  I love that they have that reaction to seeing each other, they were both so happy about it.

And on one occasion recently I left Nerys at home with Daddy while I went to pick Rhys up from school.  The first thing he said to me when he came out of his classroom was “where’s my sister?”.

siblings project 2

Nerys still wants to be like her big brother, and wants to do the things that he does.  And at the moment, she really wants to play Minecraft with him.

She’ll sit really close to him on the sofa, and watch him as he plays.  Sometimes it gets a bit too much for Rhys, and he asks her to move away.  Other times though, he will tell her all about what he’s doing.  And then he’ll let her help, telling her what blocks to use and where to put them.

It’s really lovely to see, even if it doesn’t always last!
