7 ways to spring clean your life in 2022

We might be a good few months into the year, and way past the time of New Year’s resolutions, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to make changes, shake things up, and generally improve your life.

Take advantage of the energy that comes along in the spring, and use it to clean up more than just your home.

Here are 7 ways you can spring clean your life in 2022.

1. Spring clean your physical health

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to get fit and healthy, but you’ve not stepped foot in the gym since the end of January, now is a great time to get back on track.

Try out different types of exercise to find something that fits in with your lifestyle and that you actually enjoy doing. That’s the key to actually sticking with it.

If you’ve tried the gym and it’s not your thing, you could try a few of these options instead:

  • Walking – aim to build up gradually to 10,000 steps a day
  • Jogging or running
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Dancing
  • Home workout videos – dig out some workout dvds or find something on YouTube

2. Look at how you spend your spare time

If you feel like you end up wasting any spare time that you have, think about starting a new hobby.

You could do something just for fun, like:

  • Painting
  • Horse riding
  • Gaming
  • Rock climbing
  • Puzzles

You could do something educational, like:

  • Learn a new language – I’m learning Welsh with Duolingo at the moment and really enjoying it!
  • Learn a new skill – like pottery, DIY, or baking
  • Learn to play a musical instrument
  • Improve your photography skills

Or you could start a hobby that could turn into a side-hustle or business over time.

The thing to remember here is to put things in place from the start to set you up for success if you do plan to take this hobby seriously in the future.

So if you want to start a blog, for example, think about using WordPress from the start instead of something like Wix. I host my websites with Lyrical Host and they are fantastic, with a great support team on hand to answer questions and help you out if you get stuck at all.

3. Revisit your plans and goals for the year

You don’t have to start completely from scratch when it comes to spring cleaning your life.

Look back at the resolutions, plans, and goals you made for yourself at the start of the year and see if there are any that you want to try again with.

If you’re not sure where to start and need a bit of guidance with making plans then the Goal Getter workbooks that Leonie Dawson makes each year could be just the helping hand you need.

The main points to remember though are to look back over the last few months and work out what has and hasn’t worked for you. Then use that information to put a plan in place for the future to reach your goals.

4. Replace old habits with new ones

Whether it’s smoking, drinking too much, or staying up way too late each night (and regretting it the next day), we all have some habits that we could do with ditching.

So see what old habits you can slowly get rid of and what new, happy, healthy habits you could bring in instead.

One of the best ways to build new habits is by using a method called habit stacking. Basically you ‘stack’ a new habit on top of something that you already do pretty automatically each day.

So you start drinking a glass of water and filling up your bottle for the day while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil for coffee in the morning. After a while that new action of drinking more water becomes a habit in its own right.

5. Refresh your relationships

If there are any relationships in your life that you’ve let slip a bit, now is a great time to give them a bit of attention.

Text old friends who you haven’t seen in a long time.

Write letters to relatives who live far away.

Book in dates with the people you love, whether it’s for dinner, a coffee, or a walk in the park.

You don’t need to make any grand gestures, it really is the little things in love that matter, so just make a point of reaching out and reconnecting with the people you care about.

6. Sort out your finances

Spring cleaning your finances as part of an effort to spring clean your life is especially important this year with the cost of pretty much everything going up.

Here are some things you could do:

  • Go through your direct debits and cancel any subscriptions you don’t need any more
  • Use cashback websites like Quidco every time you shop online
  • Change the way you shop – if you always buy brand name products, give the own-brand versions a try
  • Make a bit of extra money from home by doing surveys – my personal favourite survey sites are YouGov and Y Live
  • Check to make sure you’re getting the best price on things like utilities, insurance, and your phone bill

7. Work on your mindset

If you only do one thing from this list to spring clean your life, make it this one.

Working on your mindset is so often the first step to making other, bigger changes in your life.

So if you find that your first instinct about trying something new is to think, ‘it’s too hard’, or ‘I can’t do that’, then try working on developing a growth mindset.

This is basically where you add the word ‘yet’ to sentences like, ‘I can’t do that’.

It’s all about training yourself to believe that you can do anything with enough time, effort, and desire.
