Week in review – Sunday 22nd March 2015

It’s been a funny few weeks here that have thrown me off the schedule I try to set myself for posting on this blog.  So much so that I didn’t get round to posting my week in review last Sunday, but instead I was treated to a glorious lie-in followed by breakfast in bed.

This week:

  • I caved and went to the doctors after being in pain every time I swallowed for a week.  2 days of antibiotics later and I’m starting to feel better.

  • I ventured back into the world of twitter.  After debating whether or not I should start a new account for this blog, I’ve decided just to use my personal account to represent me, this glorious life and my photography business.  You can follow me here if you want to!

  • We made huge progress with reducing how much Nerys is nursing in the night.  A little over a week ago she was feeding at least every 3 hours.  Some nights she was waking every hour and a half to feed.  I’ve managed to get that down to just one feed a night and have actually had 2 nights this week when she’s not fed till 5/6am.  Shame she’s still waking throughout the night, but this was always going to be a slow process!  I’m just happy we’re making progress!

  • Nerys witnessed her first solar eclipse and was not in the slightest bit interested in it!

  • Spring started to feel like it was on its way.

  • I’ve been reminded how lucky I am to have my in-laws so nearby.  I was very grateful for their help with Rhys and Nerys when I felt really rough in the week (and for the lovely bunch of flowers they gave me to help me feel better!)

Mummy was there – week two

Carrying on with my mission to take a photo with my family every day this month, in celebration of Mothering Sunday and to make sure I am existing in photos for them.

It’s too easy for days, weeks and months to pass by without actually getting in front of the camera with our children.  It’s so important to make the time every now and then to get in a photo or two so that your children have images of you from their childhood to look back on.

The soundtrack to my daughter’s first year

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love the power that music has to transport us back to a different time in our lives.  Studies have shown that this is due to the medial pre-frontal cortex being activated when we hear music.  This area of the brain is linked to our memories and one study in particular, at the University of California, Davis, found that it is active when we listen to music but also in response to self-reflection and recall of autobiographical details.

It seems that hearing songs that we heard at one time in particular triggers memories that were also formed at that time.  I know for me personally that there are some songs that instantly bring back all the feelings from the time that I used to listen to it, within a few seconds of hearing the music.

Whenever I hear anything by Bob Dylan I’m suddenly back in my bedroom at home, hearing the music floating up from the lounge below where my Dad was playing it on the record player.

A few bars of ‘Breathe’ and I’m back in Envy dancing away with my best friend.

I hear the opening line of the Ellie Goulding version of ‘Your song’ and I’m suddenly pregnant with Rhys again, singing to him and getting all emotional about how wonderful life will be once he’s out in the world!

There are a few songs that, for one reason or another, were present throughout Nerys’ first year; that I think will bring me back to this time when  I hear them in the future.

And so, to celebrate her turning one, I give you the soundtrack to Nerys’ first year!

Christina Perri – A thousand years

This is the song I used to sing while I was pregnant with Nerys.  It’s really quite cheesy I know, but pregnancy hormones made me get all emotional when I heard it.  Especially the line “And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me, I have loved you for a thousand years”.  Before I fell pregnant with Nerys I started to get the feeling that there was a girl out there for us, and when we had the 20 week scan and found out she was a girl that line seemed to have a lot of significance!

Avicii and Rick Astley – Never gonna wake you up

This song will always remind me of the day Nerys was born.  It was playing in my head the whole time, and the whole of the next day while we were in the hospital.

Also, have you ever watched ‘Better off Ted‘?  It was a really funny tv program that never seemed to get the popularity it deserved.  But if you did ever happen to see it, you might remember Veronica singing ‘Never gonna give you up’ on her cd ‘Veronica in the key of love’?  Well, the mash up changed into that quite a lot on that first day with Nerys too.  Makes me smile whenever I think about it!

Friends theme tune

I have watched a fair bit of tv over the last year, and a lot of the time during the day I’ve been watching Friends (it’s on ALL the time!).  Now when Friends comes on, Nerys will sometimes stop what she’s doing and watch the tv, then go back to what she’s doing when the theme tune ends!

Taylor Swift – Shake it off

One of my friends always used to laugh at me for being completely out of touch with new music.  The thing was, back then, I never really listened to the radio, so I just didn’t hear any new music!  Now that I drive to school every day though, I’m listening to the radio again and starting to get more up to date.

Now I know this may not be the coolest song to choose to show how down with the kids I am these days, but it’s the one I most associate with those drives.  Even Rhys would sing along to it!

Something special theme tune

For most of Nerys first year, if we were watching kids tv it would be Disney Junior because that’s what Rhys was most into.  A month or so ago though, my father-in-law asked if Nerys liked Mr Tumble, as Rhys absolutely loved him as a toddler.  So we started watching Cbeebies again.  And would you believe it, Nerys is now a huge fan of Something Special!  She loves to wave her arms around when they spot the things they’re looking for and is fascinated by the signing.

Are there any songs in particular that remind you of a special time in your life?

Mummy was there – a personal photo project #existinphotos

As a photographer, I like to set myself personal photography challenges each year.  In 2013 I did a project 365 and in 2014 I did a 10 on 10 project.  Looking back on the photos from those projects, I’m really pleased with the record they give me of those years.  The one thing I did notice though is that, as I’m generally the one taking the photos in our family, there were very few photos of me.

There is a photographer called Sue Bryce who speaks really passionately about the importance of making sure there are photos of yourself.  She even started the #existinphotos campaign, to encourage everyone to stop waiting until they are ‘perfect’ enough to have their photo taken and to just go ahead and do it.  The stresses the point that you are already perfect, especially to your family.  And they will want there to be photos of you for them to look back on.  The quote below is from her, and she can barely get the words out without crying, which speaks volumes about how important this idea really is.

So, for my personal photography project for 2015 I am taking family portraits every month.  I want to make sure that my husband and I are represented in the photos that I take this year.  I want my children to see that we were there with them.
And with Mothering Sunday coming up this month, I wanted to take the idea a step further.  So I’m taking myself out from the comfort zone of being behind the camera and taking a photo with my family every day in March.

I want my children to have photos of our interactions and our relationship to look back on.  I may care that I need a hair cut and that my greys are really coming through, but they won’t care at all about those things.  They’ll just care that I was there.

So here is the first set of photos from the first week of March.

Are you in enough photos with your children?  I challenge you to join me in this.  You don’t have to take a photo every day, but at some point this month, get in a picture with your family.  And post the results to my Facebook page – I’d love to see them!

Even if you don’t want to share your photos, please, just make sure you exist in photos for your family!

Week in review – Sunday 8th March 2015

So that’s the first week of March gone then!  Here’s my recap of what we got up to this week:

  • Rhys went on a bear hunt for World Book Day!

  • We had a crazy but fun afternoon in Brynmill Park with a group of our friends.  Finally organising getting together more often, now that the bigger kids are mainly in morning school.

  • We spent another sunny afternoon in the park and Nerys had her first wander around, exploring the playground.  She’s still not entirely confident walking in her shoes, so I had to hold her hand most of the time, but she had a great time being out of the buggy for once!

  • Nerys spent a morning with Nana and Pops which meant I had a shower in complete peace – such a luxury!

I hope you all had a good week!
