4 things I miss about the baby stage

4 things I miss about the new baby stage

I wrote a post recently about how I’m starting to realise that maybe the baby days are behind us, now that my youngest is 2 and we’re not sure if we’ll have a third child or not.

While reading through the comments on that post, I read one from Natalie at Crummy Mummy that’s stuck with me – “Sounds like you’re getting a bit broody to me!!”

And I think I have to agree, there is definitely a sense of broodiness about me at the moment.  I’m not sure if that means I want another baby though, I think maybe it means that my children are getting older and I’m feeling a bit nostalgic for those early, new baby days.

There are definitely some hard parts to the newborn days, and after having my first I was really quite shell-shocked I think.  But second time around it all felt much easier and now there are a few things that I’m finding myself missing about those early days:

4 things I miss about the baby stage

1) The newness.
All of a sudden there’s this brand new person in the world.  And there’s something about that newness that, while a bit scary at times, is really just amazing.

A whole new person to discover and learn about.  A new set of quirks to find out about.  A new pile of questions, just waiting to be answered with time.

There’s still so much for me to discover and learn about my children as they continue to grow, but I do miss that brand-newness that came with the baby days.

2) The smell.
Oh that wonderful new baby smell.  You just can’t beat it.

3) The bubble.
By which I mean that wonderful new baby bubble, when it’s almost like everything else just stops for a bit, and your whole world is reduced to you, and your family.

It doesn’t last long, especially if it’s not your first baby, but for that short time it’s lovely.

4) The firsts.
The first bath at home.  The first gassy smile, and the first real one that goes all the way to their eyes.  The first time they reach out and bat at a toy.  The first time they roll over.  The list goes on.  The first year as a whole is a year of firsts, and it’s wonderful.

I know I still have a lot more ‘firsts’ to come, but there’s something special about the new baby ‘firsts’!

I’m sure there are more things that I’ve missed off this list, but the thing is, I just miss those baby days as a whole at times.  They go so quickly, and before you know it you’ve got a walking, talking toddler on your hands.  And I’m sure in another year’s time I’ll be writing about all the things I miss about having a toddler, as my daughter will be three, and entering the realms of ‘little kid’!

I suppose the key is to just try and be ‘present’ at each stage.  I’m not saying for a second that we should cherish every moment, of every stage, because that’s just impossible.

It’s more that we should stop every now and then, at each stage, and just drink it all in.

Because all too soon that moment will be gone.

Are you out of the new baby days?  What do you miss the most?  Or are you actually just happy to be out of that stage?!

You Baby Me Mummy
Are the baby days behind us?

Are the baby days behind us?

Today I did something tiny.  It was a miniscule act really.

But it felt huge.

I was buying shampoo for Rhys and Nerys and, for the first time, I put a bottle of kids stuff in my trolley instead of the usual bottle of baby shampoo.

Mainly because Steve had mentioned something about getting shampoo with a different smell, because with the baby shampoo Nerys’ hair still smelt of ‘hot’ even straight after a hairwash.

But there was something about that simple act of choosing a new shampoo that struck me.

It felt like a big step away from baby days.  And it’s made me ask myself, are those baby days now behind us?

Are the baby days behind us?

And it’s strange, because we’ve already done away with a lot of the big baby items, without giving it a second thought.

The cot bed got dismantled a few months ago, when it made more sense for Nerys to have a proper single bed that one of us could climb into if she needed our comfort in the night.

The buggy went to the big buggy-park in the sky about eight months ago, after one of the wheels broke off, and we never bothered replacing it.

The highchair got freecycled ages ago, in favour of space-saving booster seats.

You’d think those big items would have got to me, made me feel a bit misty-eyed at moving on to a new stage.  But I really don’t remember thinking about it.  It was just practical at the time, to make those decisions and pack things away.

But recently I’ve been more and more aware of the fact that we’re moving on to a new stage in our lives.

Every now and then Nerys will tell me she’s still a baby, and my response alternates between telling her, no, actually she’s my big girl and yes, yes she is still my baby!

And I feel as mixed-up and confused as my responses.

Some days I see my wonderful daughter and am so happy to be at this stage in her life.  She is learning so much, and is just so much fun to be around.

But then other days I look at her and realise quite how big she’s got.  And it hits me that we really are leaving the baby days behind us.  And it’s bittersweet, it really is.

We’re not sure if we’ll try for a third baby or if our family is actually already complete.  I go back and forth in my thoughts about it, sometimes dreaming about how lovely it would be to experience pregnancy one more time, to hold a brand new baby in my arms and smell that glorious newborn scent again.

Other times, I look at my son and my daughter and think how great their relationship is, and how much I actually love this family dynamic and I’m just not sure if bringing another baby into that is the best thing to do.

As it stands, we’re not making any firm decisions for another year, by which time I think we’ll both know in our hearts what we want.

But with that question hanging over me, I’m painfully aware of the fact that the end of Nerys’ baby days could well be the end of baby days full stop around here.

And it’s so hard to let go.

But that’s what that little pink bottle of kids’ shampoo is.  It really is such a small thing, but my heart is bursting with the enormity of what it represents.

It’s me starting to let go.

It’s me realising that maybe the baby days really are nearly behind us.  And I suppose embracing that; even if I’m doing so with a giant lump in my throat and tears in my eyes!

Living arrows – 20/52

The sun was shining on Swansea bay this weekend, and it was glorious!

We headed out to Blackpill to meet some friends, and spent a wonderfully relaxed few hours sitting in the sunshine, drinking coffee and watching the kids play together.

I snapped this shot of Nerys wearing Daddy’s sunglasses when we first arrived at the cafe, and I love everything about it, from her little grin and her slightly wild hair to the reflections of me and Rhys in her glasses!

Don't grow up too quickly quote

Don’t forget how much you love the beach!

I’ve written a few times recently about our trips to the beach here in Swansea and on the Gower, and how much both my children absolutely love it.

We were there again yesterday, enjoying the sunshine and the sea air.

And as I watched my children run around, and dig in the sand (covering themselves in the process), with huge smiles on their faces, I thought of this quote:

“Don’t grow up too quickly, lest you forget how much you love the beach”

Don't grow up too quickly quote

I think every parent wishes time would slow down every now and then; none of us want our children to grow up too fast, and I love this quote’s spin on that idea.

At the moment Rhys and Nerys get so much excitement and joy from going to the beach, I hope they never grow out of that!

The photographer’s child

My children are quite used to the sight of me with a camera in front of my face, snapping away while they go about their business.  And for the most part they’re great about it, and are even pretty cooperative when I get up close and ask them to look right at the camera for me for the headshots of them that I try to do every day.

Every now and then though, they’re not in the mood for it.

And I end up with a photo like this one, with a child who is very carefully avoiding looking at the camera, quietly saying ‘cheese’ and trying very hard not to smile!

As much as I may want lovely photos of my children, sometimes I have to cut my losses and call it a day.  Sometimes they just really don’t want to play ball!

Other times though, I get lucky, I stay ready and get rewarded with a gorgeous cheeky grin like this one!

Welcome family booster seat

A special seat at the table – Welcome family booster seat review

I always thought that, as Nerys is the younger of my two children, I would baby her more.  That I would keep her in a cot that little bit longer, that I would try and squeeze every last drop out of the baby days with her.

But, things have actually worked out quite differently.  She is so feisty and independent, she just wants to do the things her big brother does.  Which has meant that actually she’s dropped a lot of ‘baby’ things much earlier than Rhys did.

He quite happily sat in his buggy until he was 3, whereas (after it broke on the school run) we got rid of the buggy when Nerys was about 18 months old and never replaced it.  She is more than happy to walk alongside me, and be carried when she gets a bit tired.

We also got rid of our high chair a long time ago, after we got fed up with it taking up so much room in the house, and realised that Nerys actually just wanted to be up at the table with everyone else rather than stuck in a separate seat.  So for the most part, when we eat at the kitchen table, she’s been using the same grown up chairs as everyone else, and has been sort of kneeling up on it to reach the table comfortably.

So, when I was offered the chance to review this lovely booster seat from Welcome Family I was really excited.

Welcome family booster seat

One of the big issues for me with high chairs, and the other booster seats we’ve had in the past, is that they just take up so much space.  So I was really pleasantly surprised when this one arrived in the post, in a rather small, flat box.

When the seat is folded down it measures 41 cm x 29 cm (the same size as an A3 piece of paper!), and is just 5 cm in depth, which makes it really great for popping in the cupboard under the stairs, or behind the kitchen door even, when it’s not being used.

Picture

There are instructions on how to use the seat on the box, and it’s really simple.  You just pull down the seat part until it clicks and locks into place, then pop it on your chair and fasten the straps around the back and underneath.

I did have a slight issue with this the very first time I used it, as our kitchen chairs have curved backs, so the rubber grips on the back of the booster seat weren’t flush against it.  This meant that it wasn’t held in place as securely as it should be and it slipped a bit when Nerys sat in it.

But all I had to do was get her out and pull the straps so they were really tight around the chair (very easy to do) and then fasten them again.  After I’d done that we had no problems at all.

Picture

The seat has a 3-way adjustable harness that was very easy to alter to fit round Nerys’ waist, and that felt nice and secure once she was strapped in.  She had a lot of fun clipping herself in, and then trying to unclip it again!
Picture

Nerys really loves this chair, she very proudly calls it ‘her chair’ and she loves having something that is just for her!
Since I put it in the kitchen she tends to ask to climb up and sit in it while I potter about, which is great because I know she’s safe and she’s not getting under my feet!
Picture

There are several things that I love about this booster seat:

  • It’s so compact when folded down, which is perfect when you don’t have a lot of space to store things.

  • It attaches to the chair quickly and easily.  We don’t always want the booster seat attached to the chair, so it’s great to be able to put it on and take it off without a big fuss.

  • It looks great.  You can get the seat in a few different colours but I really love this natural wood one as it’s so classic.  It blends in really nicely with the rest of the kitchen and feels like it would last past any current ‘trends’.

  • It doesn’t scream ‘baby’.  I love how it doesn’t feel at all babyish, like so many other booster seats do.  This is purely a way to bring her up to the same height as everyone else at the table, and it’s so beautiful in it’s simplicity.

  • It’s the perfect height.  When Nerys is sitting in this chair she is at just the right height, so she can reach her food comfortably and she can be pushed right up to the table so she can join in with everything that’s going on.

That’s the face of a very happy little girl!
Picture

All in all, we love the Welcome family booster seat.  It’s perfect for mealtimes, but also for letting Nerys sit comfortably at the kitchen table when we’re doing arts and crafts, or baking.

If you’re looking for an alternative to a big bulky highchair, then I highly recommend you go and check these out!

Living arrows – 19/52

Months and months ago we went to one of Rhys’ friends’ birthday party, which had a superhero theme.

Rhys had a great time, and was really quite taken with this spider-man mask that he was given, wearing it for most of the party and a fair bit of the trip home.  And every now and then it’ll be brought out again and he’ll have great fun running round being Spider-man.

Well I was out in the garden with Nerys yesterday and suddenly heard her little voice say, “oh hello Spider-man”, and I turned round to see this.  A very serious Spider-man!

I think I might need to track down some superhero dressing up clothes for him!
