We can all learn a lot from our children

I honestly believe that we can learn a lot from our children.

You learn a lot about yourself when you become a parent, including things like how much patience you really have and how capable of dealing with sick you actually are!

But I think we can learn so much about life from them too.

We can learn to see the world through their eyes; to see the awesome beauty of a rainbow and the stars, to gaze in wonder at the crashing waves at the beach, and laugh at the sensation of snowflakes falling on our skin.

We can learn so much about how to be happy from them too.

Children seem to find happiness so easy to come by, and I think part of the reason for that is summed up nicely in this quote – “children are happy because they don’t have a folder in their minds called ‘all the things that could go wrong’.

Picture

As adults we so often over-think things, analysing situations and worrying about all the possible outcomes.

Maybe we should take a leaf out of our children’s book sometimes and just stop thinking so much.  If we want to do something, maybe we should just go for it – we might feel much happier as a result!

Being a parent really is wonderful … I promise!

Most of my friends these days are Mums.

They’re either (relatively) new friends that I’ve met at babygroup, or they’re friends from ‘before’ who are also now Mums.

And with these friends I feel I can be pretty open about the hard parts of being a parent, because they understand.  They’ve been through all the same stuff, and know how exhausting it can be.  They get that some days are just hard.

But they also know the good stuff.  I don’t feel the need to gush about how wonderful being a Mum is, because they know that stuff too.  What we really need to talk about is the hard stuff.  To feel like we’re not alone in finding some days hard.

I do have one good friend in particular though who isn’t yet a Mother.

Who is still considering all sides of the decision of whether to have a child or not.   And I have to remember to be a bit more aware of what I say about how tired I am and how hard some days are with the children.  I have to remember that she needs to hear about the wonderful moments, as well as the awful ones.

So, this is for any women out there reading this who aren’t quite there yet, but think one day you might want to be a Mother:

Picture

It is hard.  It is really damn hard at times.  There will be days (and nights) when you just want to hide and cry.  There will be times when your patience is pushed to it’s absolute limits.  You will shout and you will hate yourself for it.  You will not ‘cherish every moment’, some days you will count down the minutes until bedtime.  There will be days when you’ll be so tired you won’t be sure if you’ll make it through.

But.  Oh but.  It is worth it all.

It is worth every single sleepless night.  Every single tear.  Everything.

You will know love like you’ve never known it before.  A fierce, all-consuming, unconditional love.  You will feel it for your children, and you’ll feel it from them.

No, you won’t cherish every moment, but there will be moments that will stay with you forever.

These moments won’t come with a fanfare, you might not even notice them as they happen, yet they’ll stay with you.  The quiet moments.  The feel of your newborn’s hand wrapped around your finger.  The smell of the back of their neck.  The warmth of their body and the feel of the gentle rise and fall of each breath as they sleep on your chest.

Those moments are yours and yours alone.  And they make it all worth it.

Please, don’t let my words of tiredness and frustration put any doubts in your mind about parenthood.  Yes, it is hard.  But it is also wonderful.  Becoming a Mother is the best thing I’ve ever done.

I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Living Arrows – 18/52

I love studying my children’s faces as they grow, looking out for features and expressions that they’ve inherited from different members of the family.

Nerys looks so like her brother, who in turn looks like his Pops.  But then there are moments, fleeting expressions when she looks just like her Nana, and her great-nan too.

Other times, I glance at her and I see my sister, and my Mum.

And sometimes, I even see myself in her, which is quite special I think.  After all, I grew her, surely she should look a bit like me every now and then!

Testing our courage

I wrote recently about facing our fears and taking chances, and how doing these things is pretty important to our personal growth.

During the process of writing that post I read several great quotes about fear and courage, most of them were really quite inspirational.

Then there was this one, which just made me laugh:

“All of us have moments in our lives that test our courage.  Taking children into a house with a white carpet is one of them”.

I’m pretty sure most parents would agree that’s an  utterly terrifying thing to do!

10 of my favourite photos of my son from the first 5 years of his life

When Nerys turned 2 recently I really had that almost clichéd feeling of ‘where has the time gone?’ and ‘how is she 2 already?!’.

But when Rhys turned 5 last weekend I didn’t feel that way.

5 feels right.

He feels like a 5 year old, and it does feel like 5 years since he appeared and changed our world.  And our harddrive is full of 5 years worth of photos of our gorgeous boy!

In celebration of his birthday, I’m sharing 10 of my favourite photos of him from the first 5 years of his life.

1)  This was taken when he was still brand new in the hospital.  Sweet, newborn perfection, even if I do say so myself!
Picture

2)  Next up is this photo of me with him at Rhossili when he was about 3 months old.  We’d been away for a friend’s wedding and decided to go for a drive out to Gower when we got home and ended up taking some family photos while we were there.
Picture

3)  My blue-eyed boy!  I love how, even though it’s a real close-up of his face, there are still those background details like the red of the jumperoo that he was sitting in and the dribble on his chin, that give away what stage he was at in his development when this was taken.
Picture

4)  He’s off!  I remember this being quite a big moment for us.  When he was about a year old and confident on his feet the play park suddenly opened up to him, and he was off!
Picture

5)  When Rhys was about 15 months old we went on holiday to Marrakech and spent a huge amount of time in the swimming pool.  I love the happy look on his face in this photo while he paddled with Daddy!
Picture

6)  He doesn’t do it so much any more, but when he was younger Rhys had a real thing about lining things up.  He would line up his toys, other people’s toys, the tin cans from the cupboard, anything really.  So I love this photo that perfectly captures that quirk of his.  Look how perfectly lined up the books are along the bottom!
Picture

7)  Another one from the play park.  I just love that one eye peeking out, possibly checking to see if the swings were free!
Picture

8)  Happy, smiling photos are wonderful.  But there’s something a bit special about photos that capture a different expression, like this serious, almost frowning one!
Picture

9)  I’ve taken a big jump here to a much more recent photo that I love, as it shows the quieter, slightly shy side of his personality but you can still see the cheeky spark in his eyes.
Picture

10)  And finally, a photo that I can’t actually take credit for (my husband took it) but one that I think is so wonderfully ‘Rhys’.  A bit of a contrast to the previous photo, this is him at his lively best, unaware of the camera and having a whale of a time on the beach.

A birthday trip to the Gower

Our little boy turned 5 at the weekend, and we celebrated with a picnic and a play at Horton beach on the Gower.

Rhys absolutely loves going to the beach at the moment, and specifically asked to go to Horton or, as he calls it “the beach Daddy used to go to when he was little”.

I love that Rhys and Nerys are growing up exploring the same places that their Daddy did when he was a child, getting to know places that previous generations of the family have known.

So on Sunday we packed up some food and headed out to the Gower to meet my in-laws and some friends for a few hours of sandy fun.

Picture

Considering some parts of the UK had snow at the weekend we got so lucky with the weather in Swansea!  Where we were on the beach we were sheltered from the wind and enjoyed gorgeous blue skies and sunshine, and it was warm enough to be out with no coats on.

Nerys even nabbed her Auntie Heidi’s sun hat at one point, and now I want to go and buy her one just like it, she looked so cute in it!

Picture

After we’d had some food we went for a wander along the beach to explore the rockpools and build some sandcastles.  And while I snapped away with my camera, Nana, Steve and Uncle May showed Rhys and Nerys how to build dams and divert the stream of water that was running towards the sea.

I’m not sure who had the most fun with this, the kids or the adults.

Actually, who am I kidding, it was clearly the adults!

Picture

The more time I spend on the beach with my family, the more I love it.  Watching my children play and explore is such a pleasure, and there really is something about being at the beach that soothes me.  I don’t know if it’s the sea air or just being so close to the water and listening to the waves, but I always feel better after a trip to the beach!
Picture

We all had a gloriously relaxed day for Rhys’ birthday, taking our time to just eat and chat and wander on the beach, and at bathtime Rhys turned to Steve and said “thank you so much Daddy, I’ve had the best birthday ever”.

Well, you can’t get much better than that, can you.

Living arrows – 17/52

Rhys turned 5 on Sunday, and we had a fantastic weekend of laid-back celebrations.

We had a small party at home with a few of his friends from school on Saturday, and then on Sunday we drove out to Horton on the Gower for a picnic and a play.

There’ll be more photos and a more detailed post coming soon, but for now I’m sharing this one photo which I love of my two together.
