Living Arrows 2017 – 18/52

Nerys only turned 3 back in February, but in so many ways she seems much older.

She’s pretty big for her age which is definitely a factor in that.  Rhys was in his group 1 car seat until he was nearly 4 I think, but Nerys has already outgrown hers.  It made me a little sad to be honest, when we had to take her gorgeous Kiddy UK seat out of the car, when we realised she was very nearly at the upper weight limit for it.

She, however, was so excited when her brand new seat arrived!  We’re reviewing a group 2/3 seat from Diono, and it’s been a big hit so far

I think Nerys likes feeling like a ‘big girl’, sitting in her new seat.

She likes being the same as her big brother, and actually was really excited the other day when I let her sit in his seat on the way home from the supermarket.

It’s the little things that make you happy when you’re 3!

Me and mine – April 2017

After my jubilation last month at having taken a ‘me and mine’ photo with plenty of time to spare, I’m thrilled to announce that we did it again this month!

I’m trying very hard not to feel smug about it, because I worry that this might still be a bit of a fluke and it could all still go to pot next month.

For now though, I am happy.

This was taken just in front of Oystermouth castle.

We had been for a good look around the castle, exploring pretty much every corner and climbing to the very top to enjoy the views across Swansea bay.

Then we went and sat outside and had a little picnic.  I was really quite proud of Rhys during this picnic actually.  After years of being really picky with the foods he’ll eat he’s recently started asking to try different things.  So during this picnic he tried some chicken tikka sandwich filler, although I’m not too sure how much he liked it.  He also tried some nice and spicy nik naks which he loved!

The thing that really makes me smile is that he still pulls the same ‘new food’ face that he used to do when he was a baby.  He always looks slightly disgusted by what he’s tasting, so you have to wait a minute before you know if he actually likes something or not.

In this case though, the nik naks definitely got a big thumbs up!

Anyone else find their children do that in photos?  I really have no idea where it came from, it’s not something I ever do when I’m having my picture taken, and I’ve definitely never said to Rhys ‘give me a thumbs up’ when I take his photo!

I do love this month’s picture though.  I’m really pleased that it looks like a Springtime photo, with the blossom on the trees and the distinct lack of big winter coats.

More than anything though, I’m really proud of the fact that I’ve managed to get a family photo every month so far this year!

Living arrows 2017 – 17/52

I blinked.  I turned around for just a second.  And this little boy of mine is suddenly 6 years old!

We spent a lovely morning in Clyne woods over the Easter holidays, and I took the chance to get a few photos of him.  To try and get a bit of a record of the child that he is right now.

Rhys at 6 is quite hard to describe, because he’s so many things.

He is extremely sensitive, and can get really emotional about things.  Yet he is also so full of energy, so excitable, so enthusiastic about things.  He will talk for hours about the things he’s interested in.  At the moment his chat is mainly about Minecraft and Pokemon.  Although now and then he’ll tell you an interesting fact about the Romans, or the planets.

See, he is getting pretty good at reading now, and seems to be like his dad in that he is more interested in reading non-fiction books than fiction.  So we’re slowly building up his collection of reference books, so he can learn and read about the things he’s really interested in.

He is growing into a really lovely big brother.  He has a lot of patience with his sister, and honestly puts up with a lot from her!

He is quite serious at times, and really takes things to heart.  I think he’s still trying to find his place amongst his friends at school, and is very sensitive to feeling left out or made fun of.  He so badly wants to be part of things, and to be included, but then you can see it all gets a bit too much for him and he needs to retreat for a while.  He’s always seemed to need a bit of time now and then to just be by himself, or more recently, to just be in the safety of home.

He seems to be realising more about the world around him, and life in general, and I think a lot of it scares him.  He worries a lot.  And I’m not sure how to help at times.  So for now, we’re just trying to reassure him that we’re here and that he’s safe.  He said today that when he’s 18 he doesn’t want to go and live in his own house, he wants to stay with us.  I would imagine he’ll feel differently by the time he actually turns 18, but for now we’ve told him that is absolutely fine, he doesn’t have to go anywhere!

On the flip side of this though, is the wild, fun-loving part of his nature.  He really gets the giggles at times, and it’s brilliant to see and hear.  He loves going to swimming lessons every week, and really enjoys going out with hunting pokemon in the park with his daddy.

This just feels like a bit of a transistional time for him.  He’s working on figuring out a lot of different things.  I suppose all we can do is be here, and try our best to help him navigate his way through it all.

I wrote a while ago about how I don’t feel like I have a lot of the answers.

But there is one thing I do know without a shadow of a doubt.

I love my son.

This summer, when we go out and watch for the shooting stars around the time of my birthday, I’ll remember the one I saw 7 years ago.  The one I wished on.  And I will most likely cry a little bit when I think about the fact that I was lucky enough to get my wish, to get my son.

‘Show you were there’ round up (week eight)

Is it just me or did last week just fly by?!

I think with it being the school holidays, and Steve having over a week off work, the time just seemed to disappear.  We had a lovely week together though, nice and quiet, just what we all needed!

And now, on to my round up for #ShowYouWereThere for this week.

I absolutely love popping on to Instagram and seeing new faces in my little community.  There were some really lovely photos shared this week, and here are my four favourites.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTCaOUWAjBg/

https://www.instagram.com/p/BS_ooiOAkZx/

https://www.instagram.com/p/BS_1krrgJ3U/

A big thank you to Hannah from Hi Baby blog, Katy from Hot Pink Wellingtons,  Jo from Pickle and Poppet and Kirsty from Winnettes for joining in with #ShowYouWereThere this week.

Your photos all really made me smile, they’re such lovely pictures and it made me so happy to see the moments you captured with and for your children!

And now, my turn.

I’ve got two photos for this week.

Photos that show what it’s like to try and take a quick self portrait while the post-bath/pre-bedtime story craziness is going on in the background!  I really love both these photos, they just make me smile so much.

Does anyone else find that things can get a bit loopy in that window of time just before bedtime?!

If you’d like to take part and possibly be featured in my next round up (with a nice link back to your blog!) then just share a photo of yourself over on instagram using #ShowYouWereThere.  It’s all about getting more parents in more photos.  And if you’d like to take part in my guest post series ‘The photo I’m thankful for‘ then take a look at this post or email me at thisgloriouslife@gmail.com for more information.

tips for travelling with camera

Things to think about when taking your camera on holiday with you

If you’re anything like me, you wouldn’t think about going on holiday and not taking your camera with you.

When I start planning any kind of holiday or trip, my camera is right up there as one of the first things I write on my packing list (I’m not the only one who writes lists of things to pack am I?!).

The thing is, there are several things you need to think about before taking a camera away with you, especially if you’re flying off to a far-flung location.

Here are my top 8 things to think about when taking your camera on holiday with you.

Things to think about when taking your camera on holiday with you

1. Consider where you’re going.

If you’re going anywhere that’s extremely hot or super cold, make sure your camera can handle it.  The biggest issue is going from one temperature extreme to another, because this can cause condensation to build up in your camera.  This is more of an issue if you’re going somewhere cold, so if you’re going on a sky holiday think about taking a bag for your camera to keep it in as you go from outside to inside.  Or pack a few of those silica packages to pop in your camera bag.

2. Make sure you’re insured.

Accidents happen.  So make sure you have some insurance in place before you leave.  That way if you do happen to drop your camera, or knock it into the pool, it won’t be the end of the world.

3. Protect your camera while travelling.

If you’re taking your expensive dslr and lenses away with you, you’ll want to make sure they’re well protected on the journey.  A sturdy, protective case like these from The Case Farm will keep your things safe, secure and protected while you travel.

4. Carry it on.

Along the same lines, think about getting a case that meets carry on requirements if you’re travelling by plane.  I know I really wouldn’t want my precious camera to be out of my sight if I was flying somewhere!

5. Consider what activities you’ll be doing.

If you’ll be doing a lot of water-based activities, then look into getting waterproof casing for your camera.  This is something I’ve been wanting to do for ages, after seeing all the stunning surfing photos that are out there.  Even if you’ll just be splashing in the pool with your baby you could get some amazing underwater shots with the right protective casing.

6. Stock up on memory cards.

Even if your memory card can hold a whole holiday’s worth of photos, think about taking a couple more with you and switching between them periodically while you’re away.  That way, if anything happens to your camera, say it gets stolen for example, you won’t lose every single photo from your trip.

7. Stock up on batteries too.

Make sure you have enough batteries for your camera and flash.  And if you’re using rechargeable batteries, make sure you have the right plug adapter for your charger!

8. Think about getting a filter.

If you’re going on a beach holiday, think about getting a filter to put on your lens.  A UV filter is a good option, or a neutral density filter to help with taking photos on super bright days.  The main benefit of a filter on holiday though, is simply to protect your lens from getting blasted with sand and salty air.

So there you have it, a fair bit to be thinking about before you jet off on holiday.  But hopefully, planning ahead and considering all these factors will save you from any drama while you’re away!

You Baby Me Mummy

Living arrows 2017 – 16/52

Sometimes I forget that Nerys is only just three.  She seems so much older at times.

She is so capable, and so determined.  The other day Rhys couldn’t unscrew the cap on his water pistol, so Nerys did it for him!  I really had to try hard not to giggle at her so confidently handling the situation for him.

After all her hard work sorting out the garden with Daddy last weekend, we’ve been able to spend more time out there.  It’s looking so much clearer and tidier.

The other day she spent ages out there, filling up her bucket from the tap and then pouring the water into a watering can, or onto the flower beds.

She is getting to be so independent, which makes me feel both proud and a little sad.

Those baby days when she needed me completely are long gone and we’re well into the ‘let I do it’ zone now.  She heads into school so confidently, and I love hearing her chat to her teacher as she takes her coat off and hangs her bag up.

It does make my heart ache a little though, realising that she is starting to need me less.

I have to remind myself that this is what being a parent is all about.  Letting them grow up, letting them take those steps away from you, letting them find out for themselves what they’re capable of.

And this girl?  She is capable of so much.

‘Show you were there’ round up (week seven)

Well, after writing last week that things had been a little quiet in my little instagram community, I’ve been thrilled to see it start to pick up a bit this week.

I’ve seen some new faces popping up and using #ShowYouWereThere, and it’s been lovely.  It’s also been a fab way for me to find new people to follow on instagram too!

Here are my favourite #ShowYouWereThere photos from this past week:

A big thank you to Rachel from MummaHub, Sabrina from The Mummy Stylist, Suzy from Our bucket list lives and Emma from Ready Freddie go for sharing your photos with #ShowYouWereThere.

I have to give a special mention to Emma, that little video really got me, it brought back such lovely memories!

Now for my turn.

I’ve really got to start making more of an effort again to get in more photos, because there are only one or two of me from this week.  I quite like this mirror shot I took of myself though, it’s probably a view of me that my children will find very familiar!

Hopefully with Steve being off work for the next week we’ll be able to get a few more family photos taken, and I’ll be handing the camera over to him a bit more to get some more shots of me with the children.
