Living Arrows 2017 – 29/52

So this is it, the last week of the school year.

I can’t quite believe it’s here, and that Rhys will very soon be leaving year one behind him.

living arrows

It’s been quite a big year for him, a year of learning huge amounts both academically and socially.

I’m really proud of how far he’s come with his school work.  He is pretty quick with maths and seems to have a natural ability for doing sums in his head which fascinates me.  His reading has come on in leaps and bounds this year too which I’m really pleased with because it’s opened up a whole world of learning to him.

He goes to bed with books on the solar system and dinosaurs and the Celts, and will tell me in the morning some of the things he’s read about.  He also has several books on Minecraft which he is obsessed with, and I love how his passion for the game has really helped encourage him to read more.

He definitely likes reading non-fiction books more than fiction, and loves finding out how things work and where things come from.

As a sensitive, emotional child he has struggled at times this year, as he’s still learning how to control the big emotions he feels.  It’s something that I’m sure will get easier for him in time, but it’s hard at times knowing he’s finding it hard to cope.  He takes things to heart that other children probably just brush aside, and he often feels anxious about things that are new or changing.

He is an outgoing, chatty little boy and loves to get stuck in and be right in the thick of things, but at the same time he can only seem to cope with being in the middle of things for so long before he needs to step away and be by himself.  I think he gets overstimulated quite easily, and then needs to regroup.

There are a few things I would like to work with him on over the summer, to try and make sure he is well equipped to head into year two.  I have a few ideas for things we can do together to encourage him to be more patient, and I want to try and work out some listening games too, to help him learn to pay attention to what other people are saying.  I would love to start doing yoga or even meditation together, to help him learn to control his big emotions a bit.

Ultimately though, I just want him to be happy in the next school year.  That’s all any parent wants for their child isn’t it?

#ShowYouWereThere round up

‘Show you were there’ round up (week twenty)

Sunday morning again!  And time for another #ShowYouWereThere round up.

In case you don’t know much about it, #ShowYouWereThere is my little instagram community aimed at getting more parents in more photos.  Any photo that features you, or that represents you in some way, please do share it on instagram using that hashtag.

Here are my 4 favourite photos from instagram this week.

First up is this gorgeously happy photo from Hannah at The Simple Things.  I love how Hannah is making a real effort to get in front of the camera more.  I think we all have a tendency to see our ‘flaws’ when we look at photos of ourselves, but honestly no one else notices them.  Especially our children, they just see ‘us’ and they will treasure the photos we are in when they’re older.

Next up is this fab photo from Jo at Pickle and Poppet.  I’m not sure which of the two are having more fun in this photo!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWab4vFh1RF/

My third pick for this week is this beautiful photo from Rachel at MummaHub.  There aren’t that many baby words left in my house, so I’m clinging to the ‘bicbic’ and ‘huggle’ while I can!

Last but not least is this lovely picture from Susie at This Is Me Now.  I love how Susie looks so relaxed in charge of that boat, then you read the caption that suggests that calmness didn’t last that long!

Thank you so much to everyone who is sharing their photos with me and #ShowYouWereThere.  It means so much to me and makes me so happy to see parents getting in more and more photos.

Now, my turn.

We’ve had quite a busy week in the run up to the end of term, and I’ve not taken that many photos with my ‘proper’ camera.  But when I came to write this post I remembered that I had taken a few selfies with Nerys one day when we were killing time outside school.

I have to remember to take more of these kinds of snapshots, rather than always worrying about taking technically good photos with perfect exposure and the like.  These kinds of photos, of quiet everyday moments, never fail to make me smile.

The siblings project – July 2017

The Wales national air show was on in Swansea the other weekend, and we headed down to the beach to watch the displays on both the Saturday and the Sunday.

We always have an amazing time when it’s on, seeing the different planes and helicopters flying over the bay.  And the fact that we get to play on the beach while we watch is a big bonus!

I took the camera along with us because we always like to get photos of all the aircraft, and I knew there would be a few opportunities to get some pictures of Rhys and Nerys together for July’s sibling project post.

The two photos above were taken in Singleton park, on our walk down to the beach.

Rhys and Nerys did so well walking all the way from our house to the beach, even running part of the way through the field.  I honestly don’t know where their energy comes from!

The photo below was taken once we’d arrived at the beach, and the children jumped at the chance to try out our friend’s chair.  I think it was a bit of a novelty for them to have a chair at the beach, because we tend to travel quite light when we go.  We normally just have a picnic blanket to sit on, no chairs or wind breaks or the like for us!

siblings-project-3

These two had such a brilliant weekend, although I think Nerys was more excited about the planes than Rhys was.

She absolutely loves the Red Arrows and laughed and cheered her way through their display, much to the amusement of the other people sitting near us!

Rhys on the other hand was most excited about going and looking round the ground displays.  Last year the army had an inflatable obstacle course that he had a go at, and really enjoyed, so he was hoping to have another go this year.

Unfortunately for him it wasn’t there, but they did have a little rope ladder set up on an inflatable that he had to try and work his way across.  He was so determined to do it, I was really proud of him for not giving up!

Now we’re all just on the countdown for the airshow to be on again next year!

Living Arrows 2017 – 28/52

One of the things that I find absolutely fascinating as a parent is seeing how different my children can be.

I am really loving getting to know them as they get older, finding out what their interests are and what their personalities are like.

Nerys is a helpful child.  She likes to tidy up and seems to quite like having things in order.  Rhys has always liked order too, but in a different way.  He used to line his books up in a really straight line as a toddler, I think his brain is quite methodical, he is good at following step by step instructions for things like lego.

But Nerys just likes things to be tidied up once they’ve been used.  I remember one Christmas she seemed almost more concerned about putting the wrapping paper in the bin than playing with her new toys.

She likes helping me to clean in the house too, and she really loves helping daddy do the gardening.

She was out there again this weekend, with her little spotty gardening gloves on, helping to pull up weeds.

I have to stop and remind myself sometimes that she is only three, as so often she seems so much older.

On Saturday Steve was out all day, and she took it upon herself to do some gardening while I was hanging the washing out.

She went and got her gloves, then found one of the garden waste bags to put the weeds into before she started pulling them up.  She knew exactly what to do, I was quite impressed!

Here’s hoping she keeps being this helpful around the house as she gets older!

#ShowYouWereThere round up

‘Show you were there’ round up (week nineteen)

Have you ever had one of those weeks that seems to just go by really slowly?

The past week has been one of those for me.  Not in a dragging, is-it-the-weekend-yet kind of way, but in a I-can’t-believe-the-airshow-was-only-last-weekend kind of way.

Most of the time I feel like the weeks are flying by this year, but this week things seemed to slow down a bit.

Yet it has still slightly caught me by surprise that it’s time for another round up from my #ShowYouWereThere community!

Here are my 4 favourite photos from instagram this week.

First up is this photo of Kirsty from Winnettes, which honestly gave me a fair bit of hair envy.  I have quite thin hair I think, so can never get a messy bun to look this good!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWN1Q1egsvo/

Next up is this selfie from Sabrina, The Mummy Stylist.  I’m not sure why but I still don’t tend to take that many selfies, but this photo makes me think I should make more of an effort to do it, it’s the perfect way to capture a photo to go with a story of your day sometimes!

The last 2 photos I’ve chosen this week just made me smile so much, as I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for baby-wearing photos.

First I spotted this gorgeous shot from Abbey at The Son and The Moon.  How amazing is her baby-wearing hoodie!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWN0bFHgC_t/

Then I saw this shot from Wendy at Naptime Natter and couldn’t not include it in my round up!  Firstly because it’s just such a lovely shot of Wendy and her boys, and secondly because I’m always slightly in awe of people doing back-carries!

Thank you to everyone who is getting in front of the camera and joining in with #ShowYouWereThere.  It honestly makes me so happy to click on that hashtag and see new photos popping up every day!  Please do keep sharing your photos, I’ll be picking 4 each week to feature here on the blog in my regular round ups.

Now, my turn.

We took this family photo last Sunday, a couple of days late for June’s me and mine project.

This is the first year I’ve stuck with the project this long and I’m so pleased that we’re doing it.  I know I’m going to love looking back at our monthly family photos at the end of the year, especially ones like this that will bring back memories of special days out.

The photo I’m thankful for – with Katy from Hot Pink Wellingtons

Welcome to the latest instalment of my new guest post series – the photo I’m thankful for.

This series is all about the photos that we are really happy that we have, either of ourselves or of the people who mean the world to us.  It’s an extension of my instagram community #ShowYouWereThere which is there to encourage parents to be in more photos both with and for their children.

This week I’m thrilled to have Katy from Hot Pink Wellingtons as my guest, sharing one of the photos she’s thankful for.

Over to you Katy:

Despite my love of photography, I’ve never been comfortable in front of the camera myself. Too often I’ll go through and delete photos because I hate them. In fact, I can remember one instance as a teen where I hated a photo that my Mum had put in an album so much that I went into it, removed it, and then moved every other photo in that album up a slot so that no-one would realize.

As I’ve become older, I’ve begun to realize the importance of being in the photo, of showing my children that I was there. I love to look back at old photos of my parents, seeing what they were like when they were my age, and sometimes marveling at how they could ever have been that young! And I want my children to have that pleasure too.

And I did get better at it. I let myself hand over the camera, I wouldn’t back out of photos. Big events like my wedding showed me that a natural photo captures ‘me’ much better, and I started to like how I looked in lots of photos (not all, but definitely some!).

But then pregnancy arrived. I’m not good at being pregnant. For me, it’s 9 months of tiredness, severe sickness, and watching my body change in ways that are unfamiliar and unflattering. I shied away from the camera again and refused to have photos taken of me. Which has resulted in the fact that I have just two photos of me from my first pregnancy – a fact that makes me sad now that I look back.

Although it wasn’t a magical time for me, it’s a time I wish I’d documented better, a time when I wish I had those memories to look back on and say to my son, “That’s me when I was pregnant with you”.

So this time around I’ve made a conscious effort to thrust the camera into my husband’s hands and demand that he takes some photos. Sure, there are lots that I’ve deleted straight away that are just awful, but there are a couple that I absolutely love.

This photo was taken on Mother’s Day when I had just hit 30 weeks pregnant. It was a beautiful day – nothing special, just a walk around Bushy Park as a family, watching my toddler jump off tree stumps and chase ducks. But the kind of day that really brings you together as a family. It’s not a perfect photo by any means – the sun is strong and there’s lots of shadow on my face, but I love the big smile I’m wearing. I’m so pleased that I’ll always have this photo to look back on and remember this pregnancy – and to show my son when he’s older.”

Thank you so much Katy for sharing your gorgeous photo with me.

It makes me so happy when people step out of their comfort zones and get in front of the camera more, and this photo in particular makes me smile so much as Katy just looks so beautifully happy!

Living Arrows 2017 – 27/52

After a couple of quiet weekends, thanks to soggy weather and feeling poorly, we had a real change of pace this weekend.

The Wales national airshow was on in Swansea, and it brought with it glorious sunshine and a lot of excitement.  We have been and watched the air show every time it’s been on, and the children absolutely love it.

So on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend we packed a bag with snacks and drinks and a bucket and spade and we walked down to the beach to watch the planes.

Between displays the children had a great time digging in the sand with our family friends.  They made sandcastles and they dug a huge hole, which they then took it in turns to be buried in.

They brought half the beach home with them on Saturday, after getting so well and truly covered in the stuff.  But they had an absolutely wonderful time.  We all did actually.  It was one of those weekends that just felt really laid back and full of fun.

I just loved sitting back and watching my children having such a good time.  There’s been a real change in Nerys over the last week or two that has been a real joy to see.  She seems to have had a big leap in confidence, and now seems much happier talking to people that she doesn’t know very well.

The real test of this came on Sunday, when one of our friends came to the beach with us.  For some unknown reason Nerys has always reacted, well, with tears and screaming whenever she’s seen him in the past.  This time though, she was a completely different girl.  She would not stop jabbering away to him!

After the weekend we’ve had, I’m really starting to look forward to the school summer holidays where hopefully we’ll have plenty more days at the beach, digging and building and paddling and just generally having fun!
