Things feel like they’re slowly starting to shift back to some kind of normal around here, with clubs and activities starting back up again.
The children were able to go back to swimming lessons this weekend, for the first time this year. They’ve still got all the extra precautions in place, so they have to arrive already dressed in their swimming clothes, and us parents can’t stay and watch like we always used to. But it was great for them to be able to get back in the water, and start to rebuild their confidence and their skills.
Rhys was also back in cubs last week, in-person in the field behind the scout hall.
They’ve been meeting for a few weeks now, but with the pack split into two groups meeting on alternate weeks. So this was the first week that Rhys was actually able to go back.
While we were all in lockdown his pack had still been doing meetings online, so he’d managed to earn a good handful of badges and was even made a seconder a while ago. I’d been putting off sewing the badges on while they were meeting virtually, but with him going back to in-person meetings I got his seconder badge sewn on just in time before he went. My logic was the others could wait, but that one seemed quite important to get sewn on before he saw every one again.
So I had to laugh when I picked him up from his meeting and was told he’s now been promoted to Sixer. So that seconder badge I’ve just sewn on needs to be picked off, and replaced with this extra special new badge!

I’m so proud of Rhys for the way he’s thrown himself into the cubs experience, and it really makes me smile to know that the leaders think he can handle the responsibility of being a Sixer.
Now I just need a quiet evening (or three) to sit down and sew all these new badges on to his jumper for him. I think he’s got about 10 altogether that he’s earnt over the last few months, which is incredible really, when they’ve barely been able to meet in person this past year.
The pack are working on a cooking badge at the moment, so he also has to cook a vegetarian meal for us at home at some point soon. Anyone have any suggestions of something he could make?!

What a lovely thing to be able to see the rest of his pack in person and well done for moving up a badge. I’ve no experience with scouts or brownies but I think my daughter may enjoy it so I may research what’s available in our local area.
