A note on kindness

This may be the understatement of the century, but there are big things going on in the world at the moment.

Things that affect so many people, and that make the rest of us feel angry, and sad, and powerless.

What always gets me though, are the stories of love and kindness that rise up at times like this.

Words of love and support are written and shared.  Acts of kindness are carried out and they spread from person to person like a ripple, that becomes a wave.no-act-of-kindness-no-matter-how-small-is-ever-wasted

Maybe we can’t change other people.  We can’t always make the bad guy good.

But we can still make a difference in the world.

We can approach life from a place of kindness.  We can treat other people with kindness.  Every day we can do something kind.

They don’t have to be big gestures either.

Some days all it takes is just stopping to hold the door for the mum with the buggy.  Or letting someone in the queue in front of us when we have a full trolley and they’re just buying one thing.

Those little acts of kindness can have a big impact on someone’s day.

Those little acts of kindness really are never wasted.

They add up.  They get passed on as people pay it forward.

And maybe this kindness won’t change the world right now.  But our children will see it.  And if our children grow up with the influence of kindness and love, then who knows what amazing future they will build.

It happened.

It finally happened.

After feeling like I’ve been stuck in the house for weeks, other than trips out on the school run and to the shops, we finally made it out properly.

Saturday morning started wet and a little miserable.

But then, mid morning, the clouds gave way to glorious blue skies and sunshine.

So we went to the beach.

We walked along the sand to meet Nana and Pops, then back along the beach to Victoria park.

It’s something we do all the time.  But it felt so lovely.

There’s something a bit special about sea air I think.

And even though it was cold, and I wiped a lot of snotty noses, we were all so happy to be out.  Together.

And Nerys went on the big girl swings.

Steve’s taken her out a few times without me recently, and they’ve clearly been practicing this.

Because she just looked so right on that swing.  So steady.  So confident.  So big.

I’m not sure I’m quite ready for these moments.  Those moments that are so small, but that mark something so much bigger.

My little girl is just that, a little girl now.

Liked and loved – January 2017

It’s been a really quiet month here.

I’m still not feeling better after coming down a flu-type bug on new year’s eve.  Nearly a whole month of feeling poorly and run down means that we’ve not really been up to much.

But I’m looking to focus on the good!

So here are some things I’ve liked and loved in January.

Catching up with my parents.

For various reasons I hadn’t spoken to my Mum for far, far too long.  I’ve been going to bed super early, or the kids have just been manic, and days and weeks had just disappeared.  So when I finally managed to phone her, in peace, for a chat it was just lovely.

And I had the wonderful news that my Dad has been signed off by the consultant following his hip operation last year.

I feel so much better now we’ve spoken, so now I just have to make sure that we don’t go that long without speaking again!

Nasal spray.

For some reason I have always associated nasal spray with geeks.  I’m really not sure why, but I’m inclined to blame 90s american tv programs!

Anyway, this month nasal spray has been my hero.  Call me a geek if you want, I don’t care!  My nose has been so blocked up with this virus that I don’t think I would’ve been able to get any sleep if it wasn’t for nasal spray easing the congestion.

Meeting Nerys’ teacher.

Nerys will be starting a pre-school class as soon as she turns 3, which I’m both excited and sad about.  I know she’ll thrive there, and she’s ready to go.  I’m just not sure I’m ready for her to go yet.  But, after meeting her teacher a few weeks ago, I know it’s the right decision for her to go.

I think she’ll get so much out of it, and it’ll really help her gear up for nursery class in September.

A child-free evening out.

We had a real treat at the start of the year.  Rhys and Nerys went for a sleepover at their grandparents’ house.  And Steve and I went out.  With friends.  For dinner.  At a proper restaurant!

It was so, so lovely to have time to chat and catch up with our friends without the children running around and constantly interrupting.

And the restaurant we went to was fab.  The food was delicious and the atmosphere was just really laid back which I loved.  If you’re ever looking for a relaxed meal out in Swansea you should definitely check out Gilligans in Sketty!

So there we have it.

A really quite quiet month, but one that still had plenty of things to be grateful for.

I’m just hoping that February brings some good health with it!

What makes you happy

Happy.

That’s ultimately what we all want to be isn’t it?

But happiness can seem so hard to come by some times.  We so easily find ourselves caught up in day to day life, and end up focusing on the little niggles and complaints and things that are making us unhappy.

And it’s strange, how easy it is to pinpoint the things that make us unhappy.

Somehow, putting our finger on the things that really make us happy can be harder to do.

its-a-helluva-start-being-able-to-recognize-what-makes-you-happy

So maybe we all need to take some time to think about the good things in our lives.

Make a master list of all the things, big and small, that make us happy.

Then put a plan in place to start doing/having more of those things on a regular basis.

I wrote a post a while ago based around this quote from Rainbow Rowell:

“What if, instead of thinking about solving your whole life, you just think about adding additional good things.  One at a time.  Just let your pile of good things grow”

Maybe this is the key to happiness.

Work out what things make us happy, then go about adding them to our lives on a regular basis.  One good, happy thing at a time.

Let that pile grow and let more and more happiness in.

It’s got to be worth a try, hasn’t it?

Living arrows 2017 – 4/52

Rhys has been going to swimming lessons for about a year now at a local swim school.

He still has a way to go before I’ll feel confident letting him swim independently but he’s really getting there.  And most importantly for me, he’s got a lot of confidence in the water now.

And he’s having fun!

We’ve recently changed his lesson to a Sunday lunchtime session, and I think it was a really good decision.

He used to go on a Tuesday after school and I think he’s much less tired now going on a Sunday.  And when he’s not so tired, his concentration is better.  So he’s already getting a bit more out of each lesson which is great.

We’ve been trying to help him at home by getting him to put his head underwater in the bath, and holding his breath for as long as possible.

Which is making bathtime pretty fun for him!

Parents, do your children practice swimming skills in the bath too, or is it just us?!  Leave me a comment and let me know!

Getting organised – Stick to Stigu review

One of my big missions for 2017 is to get more organised.

Nerys will be going to a pre-school class 5 mornings a week from the end of February, and I’m very aware that this means I’ll have 2 sets of school things to keep track of!

I’ll have to remember who needs wellies on what day.

I’ll need to keep on top of homework, and snack money, and signing (and returning) important forms.

I’ll need to know what day of the week books need to go back to school, and make sure that both children have clean uniforms to wear each day.

And that’s all before I even start to think about my blog and my business and keeping our house in check.

There’s just a lot whizzing round in my head that I need to get down on paper so I can start to feel a bit more organised and in control of everything!

So at the end of last year I started looking round for the perfect planner to help.  I’ve always had diaries, but often find they go unused for large parts of the year because they don’t quite fit my needs.

But I think I might have cracked it this year, with the Stick to Stigu planner.

I’ve seen several rave reviews of these in the past, and thought they looked fab when I checked them out on the Stigu website.  So I was thrilled with they agreed to send me one, along with a to-do list pad, to review.

stick-to-stigu-planner-review

There are several things I liked straight away about this planner.

Firstly, I love the colour and design.  I know that sounds a bit superficial, but if I’m going to use something regularly I do like it to look appealing.  And I just love the fact that this year’s planner goes so well with my blog’s colour!

I also really like the size of it.

The diary I had last year was just a little too small for me.  I didn’t feel I had the space I needed to write things down and clear my head.  The Stigu planner, on the other hand, is 240mm x 190mm which is just a bit bigger than A5 size.  So it will still just about fit in my handbag if I need to take it out and about with me, but it just feels more spacious inside.

stick-to-stigu-planner

For each week you have a blank page on the left for writing down your to-do list for the week, or important things to remember, or for a bit of a brain dump at the start of each week.  Then on the right side you have the week printed out with several spaces marked out for each day for you to put in meetings, school functions, birthdays, etc.

At the front of the planner is a page to write down your goals for the year, for mind, body and soul, which I really quite like.

And it also has 32 blank pages at the back, which is just so handy for scribbling down notes and blog post ideas.  And there’s even a little pocket on the back page that you can use to keep leaflets, notes from school, etc.

stick-to-stigu-planner-inside-review

What really makes the Stick to Stigu planner special though is the little notes and quotes and tips that are included on every page.

Every week there’s a new quote to inspire you, or make you smile, like

“Be like a wildflower: grow in all the places people thought you never would”.

And you also get a lovely idea each week of a way to help you renew, relax, reflect, switch off from your to-do list for a while.

These include bits of advice like this:

“Your comfort zone is your danger zone.  The most dangerous place in the world for you to be is in your comfort zone.  Yes, it’s cosy and familiar, but it can lead to stagnation.  We need to stretch ourselves mentally and physically so that we make space in our lives for growth”

And practices like this:

“Inspire yourself.  Stick to 5 minutes when you need to feel positive and centred.

  • Breathe through the nostrils if they are clear, otherwise it is fine to breathe through the mouth.
  • Ascribe a colour or quality to your in-breath that has positive associations – e.g. turquoise/sparkly/like a fresh breeze
  • As you breathe in imagine that quality filling your lungs and permeating every cell.
  • Ascribe a quality or colour to the out-breath that for you has negative connotations – e.g. grey smoke/brown sludge/icy wind
  • As you breathe out feel that negativity leaving every cell of your body.
  • After a while imagine the out-breathe taking on some of the qualities of the in-breathe, until eventually they are the same

Now you have super-charged yourself with positivity, get out there and face whatever challenge is waiting for you!”

Now, come on, are there any other diaries that inspire you like that?!

stick-to-stigu-planner-review-inside

I’ve had my planner for a few weeks now, and I really do love having the space in the planner each week to write down all the things that I need to get done that week.

But I also find that I feel a bit more on top of things if I write down a to-do list for the next day, before I go to sleep at night.

So I know that I have it written down that I have to take Rhys’ books back to school that day.  And that I need to pop to the shops to get milk.

And that’s where the Stigu to-do list pad comes in.

Now, I know I could just carry on doing what I’ve been doing, and write my little lists on scraps of paper.  But there’s something about using a nicely designed, proper to-do list pad that just feels so much nicer!

stick-to-stigu-to-do-list-pad-review

What I love about this pad is that there is only actually room for 10 tasks on each sheet.  So I can’t overload myself with unrealistic lists of things I ‘need’ to get done each day.  I can pick out the top priorities and put those down.

And then there’s the lovely little box that I get to tick when I complete one of the jobs – so satisfying!

I also really love that the to-do list pad includes ‘breathe’ every time.  I love that little reminder every day to just chill out a bit, take a step back, grab a minute to just stop and breathe.

stick-to-stigu-planner-to-do-list-pad-review

So far I’m really impressed with the planner and to-do list pad from Stick to Stigu.

I think I have a pretty good chance of getting more organised this year using them.  I’ll make a note in my planner to write a post at the end of the year about how I got on!

If I’ve inspired you to get more organised yourself, then head over to the Stick to Stigu website to pick up a planner of your own and see what other fab products they have on offer.

Disclosure – I was sent the planner and to-do list pad for the purpose of this review, but all words and opinions are my own.

The greatest mistake

I wrote last week how I’ve been really quite slow off the mark this year.

And if I’m honest, I’m still struggling to get going.  And I think part of the reason why I procrastinate and put things off is because of a worry that what I do won’t be good enough.

I’ve not written about it much before, but I am really quite an anxious person.  And one of the aspects of my anxiety is this fear of making mistakes and looking foolish.

And it can be paralysing.

I’m trying so hard to keep this anxiety in check.  To put my fears aside and just DO.  And quotes like this are actually quite helpful and inspiring to me.

the-greatest-mistake-you-can-make-in-life-is-to-be-continually-fearing-you-will-make-one

I read an article the other day that was all about regrets.

The writers had spoken to various elderly people about the main regrets they had, as they got closer to the end of their lives.  And one of the big things that came up was that they regretted worrying so much.

They talked about how they felt they had wasted so much time, and energy, worrying about things that either didn’t matter or that were out of their control anyway.

And it really did make me think.

I don’t want to have any regrets.  I don’t want to look back at my life and realise how much my anxiety and my worries took away from me.

So I’m trying.  To realise that mistakes are ok.

They’re signs you’re trying.

They’re signs that you’re out there living life.
