Living arrows 2017 – 4/52

Rhys has been going to swimming lessons for about a year now at a local swim school.

He still has a way to go before I’ll feel confident letting him swim independently but he’s really getting there.  And most importantly for me, he’s got a lot of confidence in the water now.

And he’s having fun!

We’ve recently changed his lesson to a Sunday lunchtime session, and I think it was a really good decision.

He used to go on a Tuesday after school and I think he’s much less tired now going on a Sunday.  And when he’s not so tired, his concentration is better.  So he’s already getting a bit more out of each lesson which is great.

We’ve been trying to help him at home by getting him to put his head underwater in the bath, and holding his breath for as long as possible.

Which is making bathtime pretty fun for him!

Parents, do your children practice swimming skills in the bath too, or is it just us?!  Leave me a comment and let me know!

I wish my son would go swimming but he has so far refused to go and has massive meltdowns even if we mention it! He is fine in the swimming pool when we are on holiday but for some reason he won’ t go to swimming lessons. To practice in the bath tub is a really good idea and he obviously likes it 🙂 #livingarrows

Oh I love this pic. You can see the sheer joy on his little face 🙂 I love taking Amy swimming. Getting her out of the water is an absolute battle, though. I let her spend ages in the bath tub in return. She’s diving and doing all sorts of weird things in there, haha x #livingarrows

He really loves it, and is so proud of himself when he manages to hold his breath longer than the last time! x

Ahh that’s so nice to hear, thank you! I normally hear how much he looks like my husband and his side of the family! x

Swimming is a tough one isn’t it as there is always something that gets in the way – they’re tired/hungry/have cold. Sometimes I think it’s not worth all the effort with my 27m old as it takes about 1hr either side just to get ready, showered and dressed again. But these last 2 weeks we also had a breakthrough since donning armbands. It has made such a difference and her confidence has just sky rocketed now she doesn’t need us to prop her up (she previously had a floating jacket). I wish we’d made the move sooner. Fantastic photo – he has clearly taken to it like a fish to the proverbial. Keep up the great work practising in the bath! #LivingArrows

I know exactly what you mean, I very rarely take my 2 year old swimming because it’s just a lot of work! But I think we might start her on proper lessons soon, we live by the coast so I think it’s a really important skill for them both to learn. In the meantime we’ll keep practicing skills in the bath! x

That photo is gorgeous. He looks so happy and completely in the moment! Athena and Troy both have lessons after school and you’re right – they’re just so tired so probably not at their best x

Thank you! I am happy at the moment that we moved his lesson, I’m sure he’s getting more out of it now he’s not quite so tired. x

Both of my boys have done Water Babies (Ted is still going) and we always get them to practice what we can in the bath. It’s good to have continuity. Such a lovely photo too! x
