The siblings project – April 2018

One day last week I took the children into town to get a few bits and bobs.

We took the bus in, mainly because there is apparently something really exciting and fun about getting the bus when you’re little.

As we were waiting in the bus station to head back home I noticed a woman standing next to me, smiling while watching the children playing together with little toys they’d just bought with their pocket money.

She commented on how lovely it was to see them having so much fun together.

And it reminded me once again how lucky they are to have each other.  Especially now they’re that bit older, they can really play together well.  Some mornings I’ll wake up to the sound of them both in Nerys’ bed, happily playing with soft toys together, and it always makes me smile.

During the Easter holidays we went for pretty long walk from the Guildhall into town, and then back along the seafront.  When we stopped for a little snack Steve lifted the children up onto the wall so I could get a few photos of them together.

I absolutely adore the photos of them with their arms wrapped around each other, although I can’t actually take credit for them.  Steve was the one who took those photos, I was the one hiding behind his back and making Rhys and Nerys giggle.

The last photo is one of mine though, and I love it too, mainly for the way Nerys is throwing her head back and laughing.  I just wish I knew what it was that she was finding so funny!

We’ve all had such a great time this Easter, not really getting up to much but just spending time together away from the usual day to day routine.

I think we’ll all miss each other a bit tomorrow when things go back to normal.

stress-free family holiday

How to have a stress-free family holiday

When it comes to family holidays, sometimes it feels like you need a holiday after the holiday. As parents, we layer up the expectations of ourselves, our children and the world on our family getaways. For them to be peaceful, but exciting, to be adventure packed but brimming with quality time too.

The truth is though, to get all of that you need to lay the groundwork. It is about the planning. Once you have the details down, the big stuff begins to take care of itself.

Below you’ll find handy checklists and information to make your next family holiday fabulous.

how to have a stress-free family holiday

Where Shall We Go?

The most obvious starting point is where do you want to go? Somewhere new maybe, somewhere that is renowned for being family friendly? Sandy beaches or rocky walking trail? Destination and location matter. The truth is though; there is a holiday for everyone – it just takes a little time to find it.

A couple of things to take into consideration:

  • Weather – do you have any sun sensitive souls travelling with you? What about the cold? Many families try to get somewhere not too dissimilar to the UK regarding temperature – just with a bit more sun.
  • Teaching opportunity – mixing up fun with some new culture and local language can be a lot of fun. Think about the things you loved to learn about when you were little, bring some of that magic into your holidays too.
  • Are we nearly there yet? Travel time can be a huge factor in the final decision. This is going to depend on your children, their ages, and temperaments. It is also a perfect time to check out some online articles for tips on what to pack to keep the kids entertained while travelling.
  • Local Amenities – Perhaps you want the full bells and whistles shopping arcade within walking distance, or maybe you’re after a bit more of the free-range fun vibe. Either way, be sure to take a look in advance.

How to Plan it to Perfection.

Planning is the best way to make sure the whole process goes as smooth as possible. Getting the children involved with things like booking, making the lists of what needs to be packed and even helping pick where you stay will keep them feeling involved and aware of everything going on.

  •    Book well in advance
  •    Remember your insurance – with children; there is a high possibility of illnesses or cancellations – so make sure your money is safe. If you’ll be driving then make sure your auto insurance covers everything you’ll need.
  •    Skip the heaving hotel, and opt for something a bit more private. For example, Spain is a typical holiday destination for millions of families, but hotels can make quality time a little difficult to come by. The same sunny location, but booked via  Holiday Homes & Villas Spain | Interhome is going to reap some serious rewards.
  •    If opting for the convenience of a package holiday, call around once you have your starter quote. Saving a bit of money is always great!
  •    Once you have the location, do some research on the area and arrange trips to local attractions, by booking well in advance you can sometimes skip queues and get a lower entry price – perfect.
  •    If going abroad, get your foreign currency in advance. Exchanging currency early gives you time to shop around for the best rate. If you’re organised, you can arrange a prepaid money card. These steps can help you save in the run-up to the holiday, avoid hefty airport charges and means you won’t be carrying a wad of cash around.

tips for stress-free family holiday

What else?

A top tip is to get a few Ziploc bags, label them up and put in the following items. It will be the ‘every eventuality bag.’

  • Papers
    • Flight/travel details
    • Travel money documents
    • Insurance documents
    • Emergency Contact list
    • Hotel or apartment details

Top tip – give a copy of all of that to a trusted family member or friend.

  • Electrics
    • Charger cables – phones, tablets, camera
    • Adapters for the country you are visiting
    • Bathroom Pack
    • Toothbrushes
    • Toothpaste
    • Bug repellents
    • Wet wipes
    • Mini shampoo / conditioner / body wash
    • Sun lotion
    • Plasters
    • Sanitary products
    • Aftersun (just in case)
    • Tweezers
    • Nail clippers
    • Antihistamines
    • Savlon

Phew! It seems a lot to do, but honestly, once you have a handy checklist and tick it off as you go, it will feel amazing to know you did it all with minimal worry.

Don’t forget – you deserve a stress-free holiday too!

simple framed rainbow coloured flower pictures

2 quick and easy rainbow coloured flower crafts #BostikBloggers

The seasons seem to be a bit confused so far this year, but there are signs that Spring will be here soon and I really can’t wait to see the world come into bloom again.

While we wait for the flowers to start appearing outside I’ve made a couple of rainbow-coloured flower crafts to brighten things up inside.

2 quick easy rainbow coloured flower crafts

Simple rainbow flower picture

What you’ll need:

  • Plain white card
  • A picture frame
  • Flowers made from coloured cardboard, one of each colour of the rainbow
  • A green pen
  • Scissors
  • Glue dots (or glue)

rainbow flower craft what you need

First of all you need to cut the piece of card to the right size to fit your frame.

Then get your flowers ready.

I used pre-cut flower shapes, but you could make your own using coloured card and a flower shaped punch.  You could even cut some out yourself just using scissors, although it might be a bit fiddly doing it this way.

Arrange the flowers in a line across the piece of cardboard, in the same order as the colours of the rainbow.

You could put them in a nice level line if you like order, or you can off-set them a bit like I have.  Once you’re happy with how they’re arranged, stick the flowers down with glue dots or glue.

Then draw in the flower stems with the green pen.

Then all that’s left to do it put the picture in the frame and find somewhere in the house to display it!

Easy 3D rainbow flower picture

What you’ll need:

  • White card
  • Cardboard flowers in the different colours of the rainbow
  • Photo frame
  • Glue dots or glue

If you’re using a normal picture frame then take the glass out and put it somewhere safe, or throw it out (responsibly).  If you’d rather you can just get a box frame for the project.

Next, cut your piece of white card to the right size to fit in the frame.

Then gather together your flower shaped pieces of card in rainbow colours.  Like I did with the first picture, for this project I used pre-cut flower shapes, but you can make your own from coloured paper if you prefer.

Once you have all your flowers, start bending the petals in towards the middle to give a 3D look to them.

Once you’ve prepared all the flowers start arranging them on your piece of card.

I stuck with the rainbow theme by placing them across the card in order of the colours of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.  When you’re happy with the placement of the flowers, start sticking them down using glue dots or glue.

Pop the finished picture in your glass-free frame, and you’re done!

So there you have it, 2 lovely, bright and colourful flower pictures than you can make to bring a bit of Spring into your home!

If you’re in the mood for even more flower themed crafting, then take a look at this flower photo frame that Nerys and I made last year.  It’s just as easy to do as these pictures, and the result is perfect for a child’s bedroom.

Living Arrows 2018 – 15/52

We’re halfway through the Easter holidays here, and we’ve all been really enjoying the break from the normal routine.

Steve was off work all of last week and it was so nice to have all that time to just pootle about together.  We had a few really chilled days at home, which I think we all really needed.  On the days we headed out we ended up walking for miles and were really impressed with how well both the children did.

We popped out to Swansea marina one day and had a good walk around before visiting the Tram Shed and the Waterfront museum.

The Tram Shed is tiny, but has an old double decker street tram that you can get on and pretend to go for a ride.  There is also the last surviving part of a Mumbles tram from the 1960s that you can climb into.  The children loved exploring the vehicles and learning a bit about how people used to get around Swansea.

At the weekend we drove down to the Guildhall and then walked from there to get a few bits from the shops, and then walked along the beach back to the car.  We walked a fair distance in the end, with a stop for cookies and a drink and a few photos.

Nerys had a little moan once or twice about how far we had to walk back to the car, but for the most part she was brilliant and just kept going.

We didn’t plan to go as far as we did but it worked out really well, and we all got home feeling so much better for the exercise and the blast of sea air.

Now we’re into the last week of the holidays and I’m hoping things will be just as chilled, so we can get back to the school routine next week feeling nice and refreshed!

Have you been up to anything exciting this Easter break, or have you been just taking it easy too?

#ShowYouWereThere round up

‘Show you were there’ round up

It’s been a few weeks since I last did a #ShowYouWereThere round up, and I’m planning on changing my schedule a bit so that from now on the round ups will be once a fortnight instead of every week.

In case you’ve not heard about it before, #ShowYouWereThere is my Instagram community for sharing photos that feature YOU in some way, and I started it as a way of encouraging more parents to be in more photos.  In my round ups here on my blog I pick out four photos that have been shared over on Instagram that I’ve really loved.

Here are the four photos I’ve picked to share this time round.

First up is this lovely selfie from Nadine at Then I Became Mum.

I think this is a gorgeous photo and that she should most definitely get in more photos both with and for her family in the future!

My next pick for this round up is from Cath at Passports and Adventures.  It’s such a lovely photo of Cath and her son, and it sounds like they’ve had a really busy time together over in Ireland!

Next up is a picture from Kerry at Kerry Louise Norris that might just make you want to pack your bags and hop on a plane to visit some new and  beautiful places!

My final pick this time round is from Abbey at The Son and The Moon, and I challenge you not to smile when you see the grin on her son’s face, it’s so infectious!

Thank you so much to everyone who is using #ShowYouWereThere, I love seeing your photos popping up over on instagram, they always bring a huge smile to my face!

Now, my turn.

I have quite a few photos to choose from this time round, because in March I challenged myself to get in a photo every day.  So I have a whole month of photos that show me in one way or another.

The one I’ve chosen though is from last week when my sister and her girls came to Swansea to visit us for a day.

show you were there

I’ve never really thought that we look that much alike, but looking at this photo and the way we’re smiling I wonder if we’re more similar than I think!

Can you tell we’re sisters in this photo?!

If you’d like to join in with my little community and possibly be featured in my next round up (with a nice link back to your blog!) then just share a photo of yourself over on instagram using #ShowYouWereThere.  It’s all about getting more parents in more photos.  And if you’d like to take part in my guest post series ‘The photo I’m thankful for‘ then take a look at this post or email me at thisgloriouslife@gmail.com for more information.

Living Arrows 2018 – 14/52

With it being Easter weekend I felt like I really had to go with some Easter themed photos for this week’s Living Arrows post.  So when we had a break in the rain that has been falling for most of the week I asked the children to pop outside with their Easter bonnets on so I could take a few quick photos.

They had made them for the Easter bonnet parades that they do at school, and they were both so pleased with their creations.  Rhys had made his bonnet pretty minimalist to start with, but the day before his parade he decided to add quite a few more stickers and flowers to it.

I’m so pleased he did because it looked so bright and colourful when he had finished!

Nerys on the other hand went to town with hers from the start.

She had flowers and stickers and feathers and bows all over it, and was so proud of her efforts.  Which made it even more of a shame when her parade was rained off.  I was really looking forward to seeing her and the other children in her class, there’s something so sweet about seeing the little ones show off their creations.

I did get to see Rhys’ parade though which I was really pleased with because it’s the last one he’ll do at his school.  He’ll be moving into the Juniors next year and they don’t do parades, which I’m partly sad about and partly happy because it’s one less bonnet to have to worry about organising!

Not that I have much input to honest.  I buy the plain hats and dig out various spring-themed stickers and decorations and let the children pretty much do what they want.

Do you take this approach to Easter bonnets for your children, or do you normally get stuck in and create something for them?

Living Arrows 2018 – 13/52

British summer time arrived yesterday and brought with it a day of glorious blue skies and sunshine.

For the first time in a long time it was warm enough out in the sun to brave leaving our coats at home and it was just wonderful.

We made the most of it by heading to Cwmdonkin Park for an Easter egg hunt.

By the time we arrived not long after two o’clock there was a bit of a queue to register and get started, but the children were really patient and happily waited to get going.

The whole thing was really well organised and the queue moved pretty quickly and then we were off, searching the park for four letters to make into a word to then claim a chocolatey prize for the children.living arrows

It took us a while, and a lot of walking round (Cwmdonkin Park is surprisingly big!) but we eventually found all four letters and Rhys worked out that G-S-G-E could be changed around to make eggs!

We had a sit down in the sun for a few minutes so Rhys and Nerys could devour their chocolate prizes, then they had a few turns on the slide and zip wire before we headed home.

The park was the busiest I think I’ve ever seen it, and it was absolutely lovely.  There’s something about things like this, when the local community all gets together and has fun, that just makes me smile.

Now I’m just hoping the nice weather sticks around for next weekend so we can carry on the egg hunting fun at Brynmill Park.  I think the children are hoping we’ll do a little egg hunt at home too.  We did one last year and they enjoyed it so much, I seem to remember re-hiding the eggs a couple of times because they had so much fun looking for them!

Are you and your family heading to any fun events this Easter?  Or do you organise an egg hunt of your own at home?
