Don't grow up too quickly quote

Don’t forget how much you love the beach!

I’ve written a few times recently about our trips to the beach here in Swansea and on the Gower, and how much both my children absolutely love it.

We were there again yesterday, enjoying the sunshine and the sea air.

And as I watched my children run around, and dig in the sand (covering themselves in the process), with huge smiles on their faces, I thought of this quote:

“Don’t grow up too quickly, lest you forget how much you love the beach”

Don't grow up too quickly quote

I think every parent wishes time would slow down every now and then; none of us want our children to grow up too fast, and I love this quote’s spin on that idea.

At the moment Rhys and Nerys get so much excitement and joy from going to the beach, I hope they never grow out of that!

We can all learn a lot from our children

I honestly believe that we can learn a lot from our children.

You learn a lot about yourself when you become a parent, including things like how much patience you really have and how capable of dealing with sick you actually are!

But I think we can learn so much about life from them too.

We can learn to see the world through their eyes; to see the awesome beauty of a rainbow and the stars, to gaze in wonder at the crashing waves at the beach, and laugh at the sensation of snowflakes falling on our skin.

We can learn so much about how to be happy from them too.

Children seem to find happiness so easy to come by, and I think part of the reason for that is summed up nicely in this quote – “children are happy because they don’t have a folder in their minds called ‘all the things that could go wrong’.

As adults we so often over-think things, analysing situations and worrying about all the possible outcomes.

Maybe we should take a leaf out of our children’s book sometimes and just stop thinking so much.  If we want to do something, maybe we should just go for it – we might feel much happier as a result!

Testing our courage

I wrote recently about facing our fears and taking chances, and how doing these things is pretty important to our personal growth.

During the process of writing that post I read several great quotes about fear and courage, most of them were really quite inspirational.

Then there was this one, which just made me laugh:

“All of us have moments in our lives that test our courage.  Taking children into a house with a white carpet is one of them”.

I’m pretty sure most parents would agree that’s an  utterly terrifying thing to do!

You have brains in your head quote

Where will you go?

Today my son turned 5.

I look at the amazing little boy that he’s becoming and I do start to wonder about his future.

Who will he be when he’s older?  What will he choose to do with his life?  Will he decide to spend his whole life in Wales or will he end up somewhere completely different?

But, while I’m curious, the answers to those questions honestly don’t really matter, as long as his choices are his own.  As long as he makes the decisions that are right for him, and goes in a direction that brings him happiness.

I know some parents have big dreams for their children.  But the one dream I have for mine is for them to be happy.

Whatever job, or partner, or lifestyle my son chooses, as long as he’s not hurting anyone, and as long as it’s HIS choice and he’s happy with it, then I will be happy.

He can steer himself in any direction he chooses!

If you're not scared Ted Mosby himym quote

Are you scared?

I’m not a natural risk-taker.

I like it in my comfort zone where things are familiar and safe.  But the problem with that is, it’s quite hard to grow in your comfort zone.

Since having my children I’ve definitely started to creep out of that comfort zone more.  I feel like I’ve taken a lot of chances and faced a lot of fears.

I was so anxious the first time I went to babygroup with Rhys, but I did it, and made some wonderful friends as a result.

I was terrified the first time I drove the car to a new place for a photo session, but I did it, and I was so proud of myself afterwards!

I had really cold feet when I was about to hit ‘publish’ on my very first blog post, but I did it, and a over a year later I’m really proud of what I’ve created with this blog.

I’ve been scared of a lot of things over the last 5 years, but I think that’s a good thing.  It shows that I’m trying something new, pushing myself, growing.

There’s a quote from How I met your Mother which I love that sums it up quite nicely:

“If you’re not scared, you’re not taking a chance.  And if you’re not taking a chance, then what the hell are you doing?”

If you're not scared Ted Mosby himym quote

I’m still not a natural risk-taker, but I suppose I’ve become more of a chance-taker over the last few years.  It’s a good place for me to be; it still feels comfortable but with that little edge of fear that lets me know I’m doing something.

What about you?  Do you relish feeling scared and taking chances?

There is no such thing as bad weather

There’s no such thing as bad weather

We went out for a blast of fresh air this afternoon, and it was seriously a BLAST of fresh air!  We drove down to the seafront and tried to go for a walk on the beach but it was so windy Nerys and I had to turn back.

You know the kind of wind that, when you try and talk into it, it just takes your breath away?  It was like that.  But with sand.  So not ideal for a tired 2 year old.

Instead we headed to the little park across the road from the beach which was a bit more sheltered and the kids had a great time running around.  I was glad I’d wrapped everyone up though, because it was still pretty damn cold out.

And the thing is, it’s easy to fall into the trap of complaining about it.

Where’s Spring?!

It got warmer the other day, why is so cold again now?!

Seriously though, where’s Spring?

My husband gets really annoyed by people complaining that the weather is rubbish.  He really believes that there is no such thing as bad weather, there are just different kinds of weather.  And as long as you’re prepared and dressed appropriately, it’s all good!

While leads me to this quote:

There is no such thing as bad weather

I have to say I’m inclined to agree.  I mean, sometimes the weather doesn’t quite suit the activities we might have planned for that day, but does that make it bad weather?

Some people will talk about rain as if it’s ‘bad weather’.  Well, I personally love the rain.  I love the sound of it falling, I love the smell of a rainfall after a really hot, dry spell.  I love the cosiness of being inside during a rainstorm.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t relish doing the school-run in the rain, mainly because it makes juggling a child, a toddler and all their stuff that little bit harder.

But then I see Nerys taking her time getting back to the car after we’ve dropped Rhys off,  and there’s a big smile on her face as the rain falls on her hood and adds to the big puddles she’s having a blast jumping in.  And I’m reminded of that quote.  As long as she’s dressed appropriately, it’s all good!

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I think I would get really bored if I lived in a country that had hot, sunny weather year-round.

I love the changing seasons here.

I love all the weather that comes with that.  I mean, I love hot, sunny days in the middle of summer when we can spend our time out in the parks and beaches.  But by the start of September I’m ready for it to cool off a bit.  I’m ready for the cosiness of Autumn and Winter.  And by the time April rolls round, I’m ready for the sun to come out a bit more again and to be to pack away the hats and gloves.

Hmm, maybe I’m fickle?  Maybe I’m just British, I don’t know!

What do you think?  Do you agree that there’s really no such thing as bad weather?  Or do you dispair at the cold and rain and long to emigrate to somewhere hot?!

I need caffeine. Gilmore girls quote

I need caffeine.

We’ve had a rough couple of nights.

Both the children are poorly (again!), with snotty noses and high temperatures.  Which means that they’re both waking in night.

Needing comforting.  Needing attention.  Needing us.

So we’ve been there.  Playing musical beds to try and get as much sleep as we can.  But it’s not quite enough sleep.  So today’s post is short and sweet, and dedicated to my good friend caffeine who is helping me make it through the day!

I give you a quote from one of my all time favourite shows, Gilmore Girls.

I need caffeine. Gilmore girls quote

Anyone else have this kind of relationship with caffeine?!  I’m not sure it’s an entirely healthy relationship, but, it is what it is some days!
