My funny girl

Last year I was participating quite frequently in the ‘wicked Wednesdays’ photo linky, hosted by the lovely Emma at Brummy Mummy of 2.  The linky is based around the idea of sharing a photo each week that shows the real, and funny, side of parenthood.  Think snotty noses, cross faces and disaster-zone living rooms!

Recently though, I’ve not really had any photos to add.

I would love to say that this is because my children have been angels, but I think it’s more down to the fact that we’ve had so many bugs and viruses that they’ve been too wiped out to do anything worthy of a Wicked Wednesday photo.

So, I was strangely pleased when I looked at my daughter sitting in gorgeous light in our kitchen and tried to take a lovely photo of her, just for her to go and do this!

Apparently she’s learnt to pull silly faces.

A space of my own

Last week I wrote a list of my happiness non-negotiables.   A list of things in our lives that we need in order to feel happy.  One of the things on my list was clear surfaces.

Oh I long for a house full of clear surfaces!

Unfortunately our house, while lovely, is just a little too small for the four of us and all our ‘stuff’.  So I have a feeling my surfaces will always be a little bit cluttered while we’re still here.

I’m working on chipping away at our clutter and clearing off at least some of the surfaces, but it’s a real work in progress.

In the meantime I’m starting to daydream about a new house, and a little space of my one.

Picture

I’m picturing a beautiful house, with a playroom for the kids and a separate living room that’s just for the grown ups – no toys allowed.  I’m imagining a home with 4 bedrooms; enough for the kids to have a room each and a spare room so that my family could come and stay with us.  And I’m dreaming of a den for my husband and an office space, just for me!

In this dream house, my office is tucked away in an attic room where I could get some peace and quiet, and have the best views in the house of the sea.  Well, I need inspiration!

Here’s what else my perfect home office would have:

  • A lovely big desk to work at, with plenty of space for a computer, various papers and a large mug of coffee.

  • A coffee machine, so I wouldn’t have to venture down to the kitchen when I needed a caffeine fix.  Seeing as we’re talking ‘dream office’ here I’m picturing a really fancy bean to cup machine to make serious coffee for serious work!

  • Speaking of coffee, I’d have a little collection of fun and pretty mugs just for my office.  Most likely with quotes from my favourite tv programmes on them!

  • A proper filing cabinet so that I could get all my paperwork in order and start to feel more organised.  And a bookshelf for more storage and maybe to put a few pretty things to brighten up the room.

  • A giant whiteboard!  Seriously, I would have a huge one on the wall so that I could scribble down all my ideas and plans where I could see them all the time.

  • On the same note, I’d have a big pinboard so that I could create a dream board to focus on all the other things I want to create in this life!

  • At one end of the room I’d have a super comfy sofa.  I know, I know this is meant to be my office, a place to go and get work done, but let’s get real, I’d need to take the odd break, to flick through a magazine (for inspiration of course!).

  • Actually, this is my little haven, so I would install a blackout blind from VELUX so I could curl up on my sofa and take a sneaky daytime nap now and then!

  • Big, framed photos of my family.  I’m picturing this office as being quite clean and white, with beautiful clear surfaces, but I don’t think I could work that well in a completely blank space.  I need some colour and life in there to get the creativity flowing.  So I would have big photos of my family on the walls to bring that joy to the room.

  • Some artwork or quote prints.  I wouldn’t quite go so far as to put up one of those motivational posters that you see in offices (like Barney has all over the walls in his office in How I met your mother), but some positive and fun quotes on the walls would be great to keep me inspired to work!

I’ve created a Pinterest board where I’m starting to pin all sorts of things that I would love to have in my dream office.  Go and check it out!  I’m hoping that it might act as virtual dream board for me and give me something to aim for!

Do you have a special place in your home that’s just for you, either to work in or just to escape to?  What would your dream space be like?

Nerys is our little copycat at the moment.  Everything Rhys does, she tries to do too.  Everything he says, she repeats.  It’s really quite sweet.

Knowing this, I wasn’t really surprised by what she did on a recent trip to the beach, but it did make me laugh.

Rhys had been clamouring all over the sand dunes and then complained that his wellies were full of sand and asked Nana to empty them for him.  So of course, Nerys then complained about the same thing.

What made me laugh though was that after her boots had been emptied she then sat down, grabbed handfuls of sand and started to fill her boots up again, just so she could get Nana to help her again!

Happiness non-negotiables

My happiness non-negotiables

I’ve been nominated by Obliviously Awesome to write about my happiness non-negotiables; the things in life that we need to make us happy.  The things that we must make time for, and make a priority, in order to make life that little bit better and brighter.

So, here is my list:

My happiness non-negotiables

Coffee and tea.
This is a little thing that’s definitely a big thing for me.  I need a cup of coffee in the morning to feel like I’m ready for the day.  If I ever head out on the school run without having had a cup I feel really strange!Coffee for me is also a real comfort.I associate it with cosy afternoons in the University bar and mornings curled up on the sofa with my best friend watching Gilmore Girls.  I can’t go a day without it.  Unless I’m ill.  Then only tea will do.  I think my tastebuds go funny and coffee loses it’s appeal.  That’s when tea steps in to save the day!

A proper, long shower in peace.

I’m sure this is a common thing among parents.  Most of the time I shower in a bit of a hurry, with my daughter watching and my son (more often than not) popping in to use the toilet.

At the weekends though, I always request a shower in peace.

I take my time washing and conditioning my hair, I shave my legs, and generally luxuriate in the moment of peace and quiet.  If I’m feeling really indulgent, I’ll smother myself in moisturiser afterwards, and sit on the bed, browsing Facebook on my phone, while it sinks in.  Such luxury!  And I really do feel more relaxed and happy afterwards.

Clear surfaces.

Now, this is one that I need to start making non-negotiable in my life.  At the moment, all the surfaces in my house are covered in ‘stuff’, and honestly, it gets me down.  That visual clutter really clutters up my mind and I find it hard to relax or fully focus on what I’m doing.

I know that we’ll never have a clear, minimalist home, but I would love to have a few clear surfaces around to calm my mind a bit!

Taking (and then looking at) photos.

This is maybe pretty obvious seeing as I’m a photographer, but I love taking photos.  Capturing my children as they grow and change makes me very happy.  And sitting down and looking back at old photos every now and then just fills me with good feelings!

Being by the sea.

This is a bit of a funny one, as I didn’t grow up by the sea, yet there’s always been something about it for me.  I loved when we went on holiday to the South of France when I was younger and we would be straining in our seats as we neared the coast, to be the first to shout “I can see the sea!”.

And, honestly, I think a big factor in me choosing to go to Swansea Uni was that the campus was literally across the road from the sea.

Now we sometimes go a few weeks without getting to the beach, but when we do go, and I stop and take a deep breath of sea air and just watch the waves for a few minutes it does me the world of good.

So that’s my little list of things in life that really do have an impact on my happiness and well-being.

Nothing too extravagant on there, which goes to show it generally is the little things in life that make us happy!

stop offering false hope to parents of babies who don't sleep

Maybe we need to stop offering false hope to parents of babies who don’t sleep.

For the first 4 months of my daughter’s life if someone asked me ‘how is she in the nights?’, I would answer ‘brilliant…for now’.

See, at the beginning she would sleep for a good 5 hour stretch every night.  But I just knew it wouldn’t last.  I knew that something would come along and it would all go to pot.   And that something turned out to be the 4 month sleep regression.

It was crazy, in the space of about a week she went from sleeping these lovely long stretches at night to waking up every 2-3 hours (at best).  On our worst nights she woke up pretty much every hour.  And each time she woke, she fed.

This carried on until she was about a year old and I finally managed to cut out her night feeds.  She still rarely sleeps all through the night, but the days of 2-hourly wake ups are behind us.

Those 8 months were some of the longest, hardest months I’ve ever had.

There were days where I was so tired I felt dizzy.

I constantly craved caffeine and sugar.

A lot of exhausted tears were shed.

And one thing that really didn’t help?  False hope!

offer false hope parents babies don't sleep (1)

When you tell people that your baby is waking a lot in the night, they’ll more often than not offer you some advice.  And the internet is full of suggestions and miracle cures.

And you get your hopes up.  You start to believe that your baby will sleep better if you just do this one thing.

The thing is, some of the advice will work for some babies, but not for others.  Sometimes you can try everything under the sun and still get nowhere, because your baby just isn’t a ‘sleeper’.

And sometimes, the advice being handed out isn’t even right.

One big thing that we hear a lot is that your baby will start to sleep for longer stretches if you switch them to formula, or start feeding them solid foods.

And I remember reading this and being told this and really getting my hopes up that Nerys would sleep better once she got to 6 months and was starting to eat solids.

But, it made absolutely no difference to us.  I would give her a bowl of cereal before taking her up for her bath, in the hope that it would fill her tummy and get her to sleep for longer.  But it didn’t make the slightest bit of difference.

So I was really quite relieved to read this research from Dr. Amy Brown at Swansea University that found that switching to formula or giving solid foods had no effect on how many times babies wake in the night.

The study involved asking over 700 mothers with babies aged 6-12 months how often their baby woke up each night, and whether or not they fed them each time.

Dr Brown found that “there was no difference in the number of times babies woke up dependent on whether they were breast or formula fed, how many feeds they had in the day or how many solid meals they ate.”

So, basically, no matter what you feed your baby if they’re going to wake in the night, they’re going to wake in the night.

And I think there’s some comfort in that.

I mean, it’s not what you want to read at 3am when you’re desperate for an answer (and some sleep), but there is some comfort in knowing that it’s just the way it is.

You can easily drive yourself crazy by worrying about what you’ve done wrong to make your baby a ‘bad sleeper’ and putting together plans of attack to solve the problem based on bits of advice you’ve read.  But maybe it isn’t a problem that needs to be fixed.  Maybe it’s just the way it is.  Just the way your baby is.

I know that my approach in the end was to try my best to just accept the sleepless nights.  To steer into the skid.

It’s not a miracle cure or a perfect solution to your sleep problems, but here’s what helped get me through it:

  • Accepting the situation and keeping in mind that, one day, it would improve.

  • Coffee.  Lots of coffee.  And sweet things.  My body was craving sugar and energy, and while I’m sure there are healthier ways to get what I needed I was too tired to do more than grab a handful of skittles.

  • Having other people to talk to who were going through the same thing.  This is huge.  A good friend of mine was dealing with the same thing as me at the same time, and seeing her every morning on the school run and comparing stories from the previous night (and knowing I wasn’t in it alone) really helped get me through.

  • Taking naps.  Whenever and wherever I could, I would shut my eyes.  And at the weekend I would head back to bed for a good few hours and let my husband have quality time with the kids so I could catch up on some sleep.

  • Netflix.  When Nerys woke up for a feed in the night I would grab the ipad and prop it up in bed next to me and at least be entertained while she fed (and fed and fed).  I got through all of Prison Break, Orange is the new black and Charmed (along with few other shows) in those 8 months of endless night-feeds.

So those are my thoughts on the whole thing, and my advice for getting through it.

I’d love to know what other people think about this.  If you had/have a baby who wakes a lot in the night, have you found any advice useful, or did it just give you false hope?

A month of photos (#showyouwerethere)

I apologise in advance for this being a photo-heavy post.  There are 31 photos to get through and they all feature me, so I’m sorry if you’re a bit tired of looking at me by the end!

I’ve written a few times about how important I feel it is for us, as parents, to get in enough photos.  We’re so often there, capturing memories for our children, but we seem to forget to include ourselves in those memories.

Sue Bryce says it best, One day your children will look for photographs of you. What will they have?

I for one want to make sure that my children will have enough photos of me when they go looking for them.  I want them to find photos of me with them, at all the stages of their lives.  I want them to have those reminders of the person I was when they were little, along with all the hundreds of photos of them!

So for the last 2 years I’ve spent the month of March making an effort to get in a photo every single day.

I’ve mixed it up this year, with some candid shots, some posed shots, some self-portraits, some detail shots.

And here are the results.

So, how did my month of daily photos go this year?

It was fun, and I absolutely love the end results.  I love the variety in the photos, and the story they all come together to tell about our lives right now.

But, honestly, it was also a real challenge.

I’m still getting my head around all the reasons why it’s so hard to do it, and to come up with ways to get past those obstacles and in front of the camera.  I’m working on it though.  Because this is important.  It really is, and not just for me.

This is important for all you parents out there. So watch this space; I have several ideas for posts to help us all get in more photos, and would love to get an Instagram community up and running for everyone to get involved with.

I’m already using #showyouwerethere for photos that I’ve taken of me for my children, so please do start using that if you’d like

Living arrows – 14/52

Sometimes I look at Nerys and she seems so old, so grown up already.  I think maybe because she so badly wants to be like her big brother she’s picked up words, and expressions, and habits that make her seem a little older than she is.

But then she has her moments when my baby girl is still there.  Normally when she’s tired and can’t get her words out clearly, and the scribble talk comes back, and her legs can’t keep going and she just wants to be carried.

This photo of her resting her head on her Daddy’s shoulder is a real mix of the two for me.  A tired toddler, just wanting to be held, but who, moments later, was back in the thick of it, wanting to run with her brother.
