Now, anyone who knows me will know that I’m not the sporty one in the family. Those genes went to my siblings I’m afraid.
I’m not particularly coordinated and never really enjoyed team sports due to the fear of letting everyone else down by not being very good.
But I do remember quite enjoying playing tennis when I was younger.

We were lucky enough to live in a quiet village, with various places where we could go to hit a ball around.
We used to go to the garage courts closest to us and practice hitting balls off one of the walls, and there was even a tennis court just across the field from our house.
I remember warm summer evenings spent out of the house, with my sister, tennis rackets and some balls. She would be trying her best to teach me some kind of technique and I just wouldn’t quite be getting it!
And I remember tennis lessons at school.
When we were lower down the school we would go to the courts on the school grounds with our old wooden rackets to practice our skills. The best thing though, was when we got higher up the school we were trusted to leave school grounds to walk round to the grass courts nearby.
Oh the sense of freedom!
I loved that little walk from school, feeling so grown up but also knowing that I could get away with not really playing much ‘good’ tennis.
Yep, I may never have been very good at tennis but I do have fond memories of it as part of my childhood. And so I would love my children to get to experience how much fun it can be too.
So I think the Great British Tennis Weekend is a wonderful idea.

Have you heard about it? It’s happening next weekend, the 16th and 17th July, all across the UK and it basically involves tennis clubs opening their doors to let people have a go and see how much fun tennis can be, for free.
There’s all sorts of sessions on offer, including family time, free play and cardio tennis and rackets and balls are provided so all you have to do is book and show up and enjoy yourselves!
Sounds like a great way for all the family to spend some time together, out in the fresh air and learning new skills (or dusting off old ones!).

The brilliant thing about tennis is that the whole family can play together – regardless of their ability and fitness! I think #GBTW is a great idea too!
Yes, it is a good one for the family to do together. x
I think this tennis weekend is such a fantastic idea to get families to try out a new thing. Who knows, there may be some new British tennis stars in the making this weekend!
It’s a great idea isn’t it! x
I had a few tennis lessons at school, but I didn’t really get much from them. I would love to take proper lessons as an adult.
I do wonder if I would be any good now if I had some proper lessons, but I’m just not sure I’m coordinated enough! x
I think that’s what it’s all about isn’t it. Getting stuck in and giving it a go. Making memories with your kids.
Yes! x
Ah your memories remind me a lot of my own childhood experiences, but it was less tennis and more badly organised rounders!
Haha, oh yes that sounds familiar too! x
