Teaching your child to become more independent

Picture this. It’s 7am. Your child has been awake for some time, and is waiting to have their teeth brushed, outfit chosen to be dressed, fed breakfast and driven to school to begin their day.

However, your schedule is a lot more hectic, as you need to ensure their lunch is made and the first load of laundry has gone into the washing machine before you even leave the house.

It’s in times like this that you either wish for another pair of hands, or that your child is independent enough to get on with small tasks themselves.

Sound familiar? Independence is a valuable trait that not only will ensure your workload is eased, but ensures you child can take on responsibility and make effective decisions.

Continue reading for some tips on teaching your child to become more independent, as advised by one of the best independent schools in Surrey.

Age-appropriate responsibilities

Give your child the chance to take one some age-appropriate responsibilities around the house.

Tasks such as brushing their own teeth, getting themselves dressed, making the bed and helping set the table are all ways to encourage a sense of responsibility in your child.

As your child grows up and gets more used to completing certain tasks, you can increase the complexity of them, ensuring that they get the life skills needed to help them in the long run.

Teach them problem solving skills

The main reason that children are reliant on others and struggle to be independent, is because they come across obstacles that they don’t know how to overcome.

Rather than running to your child’s rescue and immediately solving their problem, guide them through finding the solution independently.

Encourage them to come up with their own ideas and show them how to weigh the pros and cons of each.

By incorporating the strategies above, you can empower your child to become more self-reliant, confident, and most of all, capable of overcoming any challenge that gets thrown their way.
