Last week I wrote a post about the things I want my children to say ‘yes’ to as they grow up. One of the big ones for me is that they say ‘yes’ to being true to who they are, to embracing all their quirks and really just being themselves.
As I was writing that part of the post all I could think of was this poem by Shel Silverstein:
I came across it ages ago and pinned it straight away. I just love it so much, even though it actually makes me feel quite sad. The idea of two people searching for each other, but missing out on finding one another because they were both hiding their true selves just breaks my heart!
I do think the poem has an important message though, and one that is ultimately uplifting – we might feel like we’re the only people who look a certain way or think a certain way, but unless we own it and show it to the world then we’ll never find the others out there that are like us or that are looking for someone just like us. So whoever you are, just be YOU, be the most you that you can possibly be!

I think it is kind of a lovely quote and not sad as it is an opportunity for those it reaches to get them to be confident in who they are…. let the world see them. There was a great thing on facebook today also about redefining beauty that this reminded me of. We have to stop trying to fit in a box.
That’s probably a better way of looking at it, rather than finding the poem sad! It does have a great message in that sense. x
Such a powerful message in such a short poem. So important to have the confidence to be true to yourself. #candidcuddles
It’s such an important message isn’t it! x
This is so tragically beautiful. One of the reason I have always believed in speaking to as many people as I can and asking questions as you never know what is buried beneath xx

That’s such a great way to go through life, trying to uncover things people might not be showing on the surface! x
I love the message behind this quote, and the way you have explained it. It is quite sad but uplighting at the same time, like you said. It’s amazing what opportunities await us when we are ourselves! Thanks so much for sharing this with #candidcuddles x
It’s a lovely message isn’t it, it’s so important to embrace who we really are and show it off to the world! x
Wow! Our quotes this week are on the exact same topic! What a fabulous message. It is SO important to teach our children to be who they truly are. It’s really the best thing a person can do to stay happy 🙂 #candidcuddles
I’ve just been and read your quote, so funny that we chose the same message! Shows how important that message is! x
Oh I love that poem. You are right it is kind of sad, but it does give a positive message. no matter how different you are, embrace it! Someone will love you for it 🙂 #candidcuddles
