You’re redesigning your bedroom – or you’ve just moved into a new house – and you’re faced with a bit of a conundrum. What do you use to cover the windows? Should you opt for curtains or will blinds be a good bedroom choice?
Blinds have lots of positives that can make them better than curtains. In many other areas of the home, you will be perfectly fine with a set of blinds. For instance, they’re perfect in kitchens or bathrooms where curtains aren’t great choices because they get too dirty. Still, a bedroom is significantly different as it serves a different purpose and is often located in less private areas of your home.
So, are blinds a good choice? To be honest, it’s a yes and no answer…
Yes – when paired with curtains
Blinds are good for your bedroom when you pair them with curtains. You get the benefit of blinds – the ability to change the natural light levels in your room, the added style and privacy during daylight hours without plunging the whole room into darkness.
At the same time, you get the benefits of curtains. Curtains can block out more light at night, making it easier for you to sleep. They also add insulation, which is helpful during the summer nights. A set of domestic blinds can be installed on your windows while the curtains fit over them, so the two can be used in conjunction with one another.
To put it another way, you get the best of both worlds.
No – when used on their own
As much as I love blinds, they aren’t a fantastic bedroom addition on their own. A bedroom with just blinds and no curtains is only optimal in a few scenarios. If your bedroom is located at the back of the house or you’re using blackout blinds. In the second situation, choosing blackout blinds means you lose out on the other cool benefits of blinds anyway!
You see, blinds by themselves are not great at blocking out light. This is perfect during the day, but it’s bad at night when you’re trying to sleep. Light from street lamps and cars can filter through, meaning the room feels a bit too bright and it’s hard to shut off.
Sure, you could wear a sleeping mask, but that doesn’t take care of other blind drawbacks. They’re not the most insulative, so you can feel cold when the temperature drops. This isn’t an issue right now, but come the winter time you’ll feel it.
Overall, pairing blinds with curtains is the best approach for the bedroom. Blinds on their own can be perfect in kitchens or bathrooms as you don’t need them to block out all the light or be overly insulative. Some people even like to use them in the living room. But, when it comes to the bedroom, you need some curtains to compliment the blinds. This way, you get all the benefits of blinds without any of the drawbacks getting on your nerves.
