5 ways to spruce up your garden for spring

It might not seem like it, with the cold weather not looking like it’s going anywhere any time soon, but spring really is just around the corner. And if you have a garden that’s been looking a little sad over the winter months then now’s the time to start showing it some love and sprucing things up ready for the new season.

Not sure where to start? Well here are 5 things you can do in March and April to get your garden cleared up and ready for spring.

1. Tidy up

First things first, give your garden a pre-spring spring clean.

Before you do anything else have a good tidy up in the garden, so you can start again with a clean slate. Here are some things to include in your clean-up:

  • Clear out fallen leaves and debris from your flower beds, patio areas, and lawn
  • Cut back or trim any perennials that you didn’t deal with at the start of winter
  • Pull up any weeds from your flower beds
  • Sweep and wash your garden paths and patios

2. Take care of your lawn

Once the garden in general has been tidied up it’s time to show your lawn a bit of love. The grass might not have grown much over the winter but it’s still worth giving it a trim and a tidy.

If you don’t own a lawn mower then it might be worth looking into lawn mower hire so you can get it looking shipshape without a big investment (or worrying about where to store a mower!).

You might also want to tidy up the edges of your lawn and rake up any leaves and debris from the grass.

3. Sort your seeds and check your tools

Make a plan for the plants you want to grow in your garden this year and get your seeds sorted.

Some can be planted straight into the garden while others do better when they’re started in pots inside the house or in a greenhouse. So think about what you want and do a bit of research into the best way to get your seeds started.

Now’s also a great time to check on all your gardening tools and make sure they’re clean, sharp, and ready to use.

4. Take care of your furniture

You might not want to be sitting out in the garden quite yet, but it won’t be long until the weather starts to warm up and you start thinking about coffee on the patio, alfresco dinners, and weekend bbqs.

So give your outdoor furniture a bit of care and attention now so it’s ready to use when the sun shows its face. Most garden furniture can be brushed down to clear off dirt and then given a good scrub with soapy water.

5. Add some colour

While you’re waiting for your spring flowers to appear you can still add a pop of colour to your garden with some new accessories.

Think about adding some bright flower pots, a cheerful bird house, colourful windchimes, or some fun bunting. You could also hang some colourful fairy lights, paint your fences, or even add a mural to a wall in the garden.

Whether you decide to tackle all the tasks over a weekend or spread them out a little, with a bit of work, planning, and creativity you’ll soon be on your way to a gorgeous garden that’s ready to be enjoyed when the spring sunshine appears.
