3 ways to protect your home this winter

Is your home ready for winter? With the temperatures seemingly dropping each year in the UK and the winters becoming colder, preparing your house for the onslaught and increase in bad weather means you can ward off any excessive damage or issues pertaining to the changes in seasons.

Typically, people spend more time at home and inside in the winter, meaning homes must be up to the challenge of the increased pressure this brings.

These tips can help you ensure your home is ready for the cold season and try to eliminate as many nasty surprises as possible.

Check your roof and gutters

From falling leaves in autumn to freezing water in gutters and damage to roofing from debris blown around in high winds, your roof and gutters can come under intense strain during this time of year.

So, getting out and checking your roof visually or physically, if you can do so, can alert you of potential issues and get them sorted before they become bigger jobs. Look for missing slates or damaged gutters, blockages and piles up on the roof or water running in places it shouldn’t be.

From here you can get them rectified so you don’t experience massive issues once the weather really does change at the start of the new year.

Boilers

Plumbers experience more callouts for boilers during the winter than at any other time of the year. This is simply down to the fact that most people don’t use their boilers so much during the warmer months. But they suddenly put the heating on when the temperature drops and increase the pressure on the system.

Having your boiler serviced or checked can alert you to any issues and help you avoid having to suffer in silence should it break down this winter.

Servicing can find out if there is anything wrong with your boiler, get repairs booked, and avoid complete system failure. You can also get a new boiler if it’s determined that yours isn’t fit for purpose at the service.

Increase insulation

Lastly, assessing your current insulation levels and adding to them can be beneficial to prevent your home from becoming colder and using more resources to heat up.

From adding draught excluders to doors, seals to windows to block out draughts (typically only beneficial on older single pane windows if they are installed and not required for newer double or triple glazed windows), adding floor-length curtains or external doors and to your windows, increasing loft insulation or adding rugs or carpets to flooring are all options you can consider to improve insulation to your home and make it as warm as possible.

Getting your home ready for winter is something you can do anytime, and it’s not too late to get things checked out and repaired if necessary.

Not only will your bank account thank you for presenting any issues and getting them resolved before they become worse, but you can enjoy your home this winter without worrying about any damage that might be caused or repairs you need to worry about.
