Birthdays are a fun and happy occasion meant to celebrate milestones in your life as well as your personal growth.
With how fast time flies, birthdays allow you to reflect on your life’s journey and see how far you’ve come over the years.
Despite them being a yearly occurrence, there’s something about birthdays that I find makes each and every one of them special in their own way. From throwing a big party to receiving presents, and spending time with your family and friends, there are so many ways to make your birthday a day to remember.
However, I feel everyone has that one special birthday that they look back on fondly. For me, that would be my thirteenth. Although I wouldn’t say it was exactly a conventional birthday, it was certainly one that formed a lasting memory in my and my family’s life.
This is the story of my thirteenth birthday and how it ended up turning into quite a disaster, but one that I will never forget.
Let’s travel back to the past!
A Normal Birthday Morning
My thirteenth birthday started out rather uneventfully. It was a Saturday morning, the birds were chirping and I was awoken by our family pet cockapoo, Lucy. I love Lucy, but I could’ve done without the slobbery wake-up call as she covered my face in licks and kisses.
After lying in bed and contemplating my life up until that point, I decided it was time to get out of bed and start my day.
As I made my way downstairs and to the kitchen, I could hear my mum and dad discussing who would be attending my party later that day. Meanwhile, my older brother, Terry and my sister, Lilian were having one of their morning tiffs over the last breakfast scone.
Soon after I entered the kitchen to a chorus of birthday wishes, everyone went back to their regular morning routines and so did I.
I will confess, as I entered the realm of being a teenager, I expected things to feel different, but I was a bit disappointed at how much everything stayed the same.
The Party Begins
After setting up decorations and passing time with some cockapoo grooming (we couldn’t have Lucy looking anything but her best!) and watching the telly, it was finally time for the party. My family had decided to keep it relatively low key that year and invite only some close friends and family.
Dressed in my finest outfit, one that looking back was frankly a crime against fashion, I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to celebrate my day.
At any family gatherings, we often encourage our relatives to bring over their pets as Lucy loves having some furry friends to play with. However, we didn’t plan on my great aunt, Gertrude bringing her feisty Calico, Charles, the only pet Lucy never seemed to get along with.
Nonetheless, to ensure the party went smoothly, we decided it would be best if we let Lucy run about in the garden with our family’s dogs until the party was over.
As more and more family members began to arrive, the party was finally getting into the groove of things.
From Party to Pandemonium
My aunt was yet again retelling the story about the one time her company forced her and several employees to participate in a yoga retreat and how it completely ‘changed her life’.
Meanwhile, Terry, who had only recently gotten engaged, was being targeted by my uncles to discuss stag do locations. He did his best to avoid running into them, but he was outnumbered and eventually ended up ensnared in far too many tiresome conversations.
Aside from once again having to listen to family affairs I couldn’t care less about, everything was going smoothly.
That was until my dad brought in the cake from our car and Lucy seized the opportunity to run through the door, her eyes laser-focused on Charles.
My sister tried to grab onto Lucy’s leash only for it to slip right out of her hands as our family pet dashed up the stairs. Lucy was a dog on a mission and Charles was her target.
From the top of the stairs, we chased both the pets into my brother’s room. Charles had taken shelter on top of Terry’s shelf of Tubbz collectables while Lucy had found a new target, one that was much easier to catch.
For context, Lucy loves to chew on Terry’s Tubbz and because of that my brother always kept them locked up within his sturdy bookshelf. However, in what I only assume is the rush to get ready for the party, he had carelessly left his brand new Tubbz fallout figure lying on his desk.
Using our distraction to her advantage, Lucy immediately snatched the Tubbz figure and dashed out of the room, my brother frantically chasing after her. I recall him spending a good fifteen minutes trying to get Lucy to release his figure to no avail.
From my perspective, the series of events until then had been rather hilarious to watch as a bystander. That was until Lucy decided it was time to bring me into her web of chaos. Having her toy wrongfully stolen from her, she then made her way to the base of the table to lie down. Breathing a sigh of relief, our family assumed she’d finally tired herself out.
With things finally more calm, my mum and dad ushered everyone around the table declaring it was time to cut my cake. Little did we know, Lucy still had one last antic up her furry sleeve. Laid below the table, she had noticed a stray ribbon dangling from the table and as any good dog would, she decided to tug on it.
Now ordinarily, this would’ve been fine, however, this particular ribbon was attached to the cardboard base beneath my cake. After tugging on the ribbon a couple of times, and becoming frustrated at the lack of movement, she gave one final tug that flipped my cake up into the air and down onto our living room floor, leaving all of us staring in disbelief at the crumbled mound that was supposed to be my cake.
Fortunately, my mum was able to run out and get another cake from the local bakery and my party was saved. Lucy was put on a time-out, while my brother stayed heartbroken over his wet and chewed-up figurine for the rest of the evening.
The End of an Eventful Day
After everyone had their fill of our second birthday cake, the party soon wrapped up as everyone took their leave.
While many of our relatives were just relieved that they hadn’t been casualties in Lucy’s unexpected rampage, my aunt Gertrude swore that this would be the last time Lucy ever saw her precious cat, and I think that was the last time I ever saw Charles myself.
From time to time, I still vividly picture the horror-stricken look on my brother’s face as Lucy grabbed his precious figurine as well as the awe-struck look of disbelief of my family as the cake tumbled to the ground, and chuckle to myself. That truly was a birthday party unlike any other.
While my birthday party may not have gone as I expected, Lucy’s wild and wacky antics at my party are ones that I will never forget.
