Choosing the right shoes really does matter

Why choosing the right shoes really does matter

The other day I was browsing through some clothing sites, when I came across the shoe section of Simply Be. I was getting distracted by a pair of sandals, but the thing that caught my attention the most was the fact that they sell 246 different styles of footwear. At first, that seemed like a lot of choice. But, when you think about it, that level of choice is actually essential.

When it comes to footwear, we all have very different tastes and needs. So, modern retailers need to offer us plenty of choice if they are to get our custom. As you will see, when you read on, choosing the right footwear really matters. It has quite an impact on your life.

Why choosing the right shoes really does matter

Your choice of footwear says a lot about you

The type of footwear you choose to wear says far more than you realise about who you are. In 2012, Dr. Omri Gillath from the University of Kansas published a study called “Shoes as a Source of First Impressions”.

During the study, he and his team asked participants to provide them with a photo of the shoes they wore most often. They were also asked to complete a questionnaire that uncovered key facts about their lifestyle and personalities. Coders combined the two sets of details to reveal the relationship between key footwear features and certain personal details.

Other participants were then asked to look at photos of each pair of shoes, boots or sandals. They then had to determine the age, income, gender and attachment anxiety of the wearer. Amazingly, most of the time, they were able to come up with the right answers.

Therefore, as you can see, your choice of footwear actually does say a lot about you. If you want to make a good first impression, you need to choose what you wear on your feet carefully.

The connection between footwear and health

The type of footwear you wear has a significant impact on your long-term health. If you do not choose wisely you can suffer from quite a range of health issues in later life. Here are just a couple of examples.

Avoid bunions

Wearing shoes that cramp up your toes or cause you to put too much weight on the balls of your feet, can lead to bunions. They don’t look nice and, later in life, they will become quite painful.

Choosing the right footwear helps you to stay active as you age

Once your feet start to hurt, staying active becomes incredibly difficult. Being in pain when you stand or walk just a few steps is no fun.

It makes you want to stay at home, which can lead to loneliness and mental health issues. Because you are no longer getting enough exercise your physical health will soon start to deteriorate.

The right footwear for good posture

Wearing the wrong shoes can also have a very negative impact on your posture. When you stand or walk your entire muscular-skeletal system is under quite a bit of strain and pressure. If your posture is not right, everything is pulled out of shape.

Eventually, this leads to wear and tear and can cause you to develop issues with your joints or spine.

So while it might seem like a small thing, actually the shoes that we choose to wear can have an impact on so many parts of our lives.  Sounds like a pretty good reason to go shoe shopping if you ask me.
