Top tips for supporting your child during exam period

Exam period is tough for young people and it’s important that they have supportive parents to help them get through it.

They are under a lot of pressure to perform well and get the grades to take them onto the next level in their academic journey, which can take it’s toll on their mental and physical health.

Here are some tips on how to support your child during exam period from a sixth form college in London.

Praise their hard work

Focussing on your child’s grades will only add to the pressure they’re already feeling and will make them feel self-conscious if they don’t get the results you were all hoping for. Instead, it’s better to focus on the effort they’re putting in as that is ultimately more important than the end result.

As long as they are trying their best, that’s all you can hope for. With that said, be sure to praise your child for revising hard and let them know how proud you are of them.

Create a revision timetable

Help your child prepare a revision schedule so that they know what they should be studying and when.

Be sure to include more time for the areas they are struggling with, as there’s no point in spending equal amounts of time revising something they already understand as something they don’t understand at all.

Also factor in regular breaks into their revision timetable, as it’s important that the continue doing the things they love to keep their spirits high.

Encourage a healthy lifestyle

If your child stays up late cramming in revision, or snacks on junk food to save time rather than eating a proper meal, they will feel sluggish and find it hard to concentrate.

What’s more, poor lifestyle choices might compromise the immune system, which certainly won’t do them any favours.

With this in mind, make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time so that they are getting at least eight hours of sleep, and ensure they eat a healthy balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated should help them focus.
