Simple ways for just about anyone to take great family photos

As a parent I bet you take a lot of photos of your family, but do you find they end up looking a bit dull and uninspired?

Or maybe they just don’t look as professional as you would like them to? If either of those things sound familiar, now could be the ideal time to take some steps that will allow you to take better family photos. And they’re easy too.

These are things that anyone can do to start taking great family photos.

Understand the importance of lighting

The importance of lighting should never be underestimated.

Photography really is all about learning to master light, so if you’re going to learn about taking better photos then lighting is a great place to start.  Whenever possible take photos of your children in natural light.  And look for soft, even  light rather than harsh, bright sunlight.  Overcast days are often the best for taking photos because the light is so lovely and soft and even!

Take part in courses and workshops

If you really want to go the extra mile and do more to become a better photographer, you should think about taking part in a course or a workshop. These can be found pretty easily in many local areas, so see if you can find one near you. The best photography workshops allow you to learn from people who really know what they’re talking about. When you’ve completed them, you should notice the difference in your photos almost immediately.

Find the equipment that meets your needs

There’s a quite famous quote about the best camera being the one you have with you, which I agree with up to a point.

After a while though, if you really want your photography to improve you will need to invest in better gear.  If you want to take better photos of your family, you might want to look at investing in a DSLR, and a decent prime len.  The 50mm lens is a great place to start when  you’re ready to move on from the kit lens that will come with your camera.  I personally noticed a big improvement in the quality of my images when I switched over to prime lenses.

Be imaginative

If you want to stop taking dull photos you need to try being a bit more imaginative when you take them.  There is, of course, nothing wrong with taking the classic family portraits. But it can get a little boring and repetitive after a while. It can be much better for you to try something different, to help you expand your skills and capabilities as an amateur photographer.

Make it Fun for Everyone

Sometimes, the biggest challenge of all is getting your whole family in the same place at the same time in order for you to take a photo. It’s genuinely difficult to make that happen at times. So, make it fun. Set up family activities that you can do together, and then take the chance to take some photos while it’s ongoing. Or do something out of the ordinary to get a good photo, and make it entertaining for everyone.

Taking family photos should be a joy and a pleasure, so make it that way. If you take note of each of the points mentioned above, you should be able to have some fun with it and produce great shots you’ll treasure forever.
