It helps to consider your career before marriage to avoid some of the most challenging parts of being in a relationship. All things being equal, your partner deserves to be included in things as well. From financial goals to moving for your job, here are some of the major reasons to think about (and talk about) your career and future career plans with your partner.
Some jobs are extremely stressful
Pretty much any job provides some level of stress. But there are jobs out there that can cause extreme stress to the point of mental health issues. Of course, these include law enforcement, armed services and medical.
This is why law firms offer things like teams with experienced police divorce lawyers. Stress at work can also come from office management, crunch times in the games industry and care work. Your partner needs to know what they are getting into first.
Reaching financial goals
Money doesn’t buy happiness, but we all know it’s still pretty important. We need money for bills and food, and having enough can provide a sense of security. So, we all have financial goals that we aim to achieve at some point.
This could mean getting a mortgage, having enough for what we need and sending our kids to college. Your career can determine the likelihood of reaching these financial goals, so it must be discussed when getting married. It also allows you to make accurate plans around income.
Making decisions as a couple
If you’ve been on your own for a while then you’ll be used to making decision by yourself, but of course that’ll be different once you’re married. Although, one poll found that as little as between 16% and 30% of couples actually make major decisions together, which isn’t ideal.
Bilateral decisions are a sign of a healthy relationship and, at the least, show respect for each other. And there are few decisions in life other than what you want to do for the rest of your career. So while decisions about your career are ultimately your own, it’s definitely something to discuss with your partner.
You may have to move for work
There are many jobs where you may have to move in order to carry out your work. This is always made clear by your employer, and you may be expected to comply if you have signed a contract. But it isn’t fair to spring this on your partner out of the blue.
So make it clear that you may have to move or are expected to if needed. This helps get your partner on board with your job, and you can then make the necessary plans for moving if you eventually have to later on.
Managing the family home
We all know that your day doesn’t begin and end with the start and finish of work. Even working full-time, you are still responsible for your share of the things that need doing around the home. For example, cooking and cleaning now and then is fair, and looking after the kids shouldn’t even be questioned. If your career will get in the way of other responsibilities then you need to talk this over with your partner so you can both work out a plan together.
Some jobs are very stressful, which is why you it’s important to discuss your careers before marriage. You will also find that you need to make decisions together as a couple if you are to stay in a healthy relationship. And there are responsibilities outside of work you also need to address.
