The dream of one day becoming a parent is a deeply felt aspiration that many people and couples share as part of their lives’ journeys. It’s a chance to share one’s love with a new little life and to give someone a real opportunity in life.
Over the years, the available options for individuals and couples with dreams of parenthood have grown, and while there is variation between the ways these dreams are achieved, the love that they demonstrate is the one thing that never changes.
Traditional paths to parenthood
For many, the journey to parenthood begins with the natural process of conception, awaiting the good news from a shop-bought pregnancy test and then getting confirmation from a doctor.
There are so many thrilling steps along the way, but even if you are fortunate enough to conceive conventionally, it isn’t an uncomplicated path.
Few stories about pregnancy and childbirth really prepare you for how much of a test it is physically, so there will be times when you may feel overwhelmed. Just remember that it’s natural to feel this way and it will be worth it in the end.
Assisted reproduction
In seeking to become parents, many couples turn to assisted reproductive technologies, and developments like IVF and IUI have opened the door for innumerable parents in the last half of a century.
Among the many options now available to couples who are struggling to conceive in the traditional way, embryo donation is one path that is gaining in popularity, allowing generous donors to give anxious couples the chance they’ve been waiting for.
In many cases, the children who are born as a result of these technologies are all the more cherished, because they have been awaited so long.
Adoption
The process of adopting a child can be gruelling, but is worth it. For a child who has not been able to remain with their birth parents, it represents a chance for a life filled with love from new parents.
For those adopting a child, either newborn or older, it is an opportunity to take on a little life and give it all the opportunities other kids have.
This process is often portrayed as being filled with anxiety over the child learning about their history and feeling somehow less, but the reality is that adopted children most often come to feel immensely grateful for the opportunities their adoptive parents have given them.
Surrogacy
Surrogate birth is an option for couples who may not be able to carry a child to term for physical reasons, and can be approached in a number of ways.
The couple can agree with a friend or loved one to carry the baby on behalf of the couple, and make an agreement that may include financial recompense for the physical toll.
They may alternatively decide to appoint a surrogate who isn’t initially known to them, but who they get to know both before and during the pregnancy.
This path works best when all parties share a common desire to give this new life the best possible chances in life.
