As humans, we all have feelings and knowing how to be compassionate towards them is an essential social skill.
Raising your child to show compassion towards others can help them to become a kind and more thoughtful person that you can be proud of. We have some guidance below from a pre prep school in Buckinghamshire on how you can do this.

Get a pet
Pets bring so much joy into a family and can teach your child a thing or two about caring for someone else.
Doing something nice for their pet will help them to feel good in themselves and develop a loving bond.
Empathy
As your child grows older, they will encounter situations where they see others sad and find themselves having to comfort them.
This can be difficult to do not having seen it before. By treating your child as well as those around you with empathy, you can teach them how to do the same.
Self-compassion
Being kind to yourself is just as important. Children should learn how to take care of their emotions and be gentle on themselves. Exercising self-care can help them maintain good mental wellbeing.
It’s also in the words that they use to talk to themselves. You can encourage them to think kindly about themselves by doing so yourself
Volunteering
Doing something nice for someone other than themselves can teach children to be kind and gain enjoyment from it. That might be something like a charity bake sale or something small like litter picking to keep the neighbourhood clean.
Gratitude
Acknowledging what they have to be grateful for can encourage children to give back and help others. It can also make them more aware of the kindness that they receive and do so in return.
