How to foster a growth mindset in your child

In order to develop a good mindset in children that promotes better ways of thinking, it’s important to show your child how they can overcome anything that is thrown at them.

A growth mindset is something children will become aware of as they attend school, just like at this Sixth Form in Devon, and can be encouraged further at home as well. Here is how you can do it.

Allow your child to take risks

A child won’t be able to handle the complexities of many tasks if they can’t take a risk.

Where you can it’s good to let your child push themselves out of their comfort zone and rise up to a challenge if they can. This will test your child on how to take on new experiences without feeling afraid to pursue them.

There will be many times where your child feels uncomfortable, but there’s also the opportunity to learn from these experiences and see where skills can be further developed.

Teach your child about mistakes

Mistakes happen and they are a very common part of learning how to adapt to common problems. Your child will have made plenty of mistakes without even realising sometimes, from spilling food when they are little to making a mess on the table.

But they should never be viewed as poor aspects of development; this is where your child can learn from others how to handle a mistake and where to put their focus for next time.

Encourage your child to enjoy the process

Even when making a mistake your child should feel like they have gained something from that experience.

It’s very natural to feel uncomfortable about taking a risk, or making a mistake, but it’s a part of how we all learn to overcome difficult situations. It should therefore be something to enjoy; it will give your child a better understanding of their own skills, and improve their confidence.

Give your child a reward for doing their best, you’d be surprised how much this helps drive them forwards in their studies.

The growth mindset is how a child is able to see growth in their studies. If they can’t see that then it can cause issues for their development.

Bring up a child that knows they can try whatever they fancy, and make them feel proud of the choices they do make. These things alone can help your child with their development for the future.
