A child is always going to need to think critically in order to manage their own expectations and be able to come in the face of adversity.
Schools all across the globe, and including when a child is in nursery school, will deliver a number of lessons and tasks that help children learn to think critically.
Similarly at home, parents can use a range of activities and real life situations to help their children learn. Here are some ways you can make this happen.
Giving your child the chance to take charge
Part of allowing a child to think critically is going to be in the opportunities they’re given.
A parent that doesn’t allow their child to make any choices for themselves is less likely to know when their input is even needed.
Critical thinking goes beyond making small decisions at home, it also comes down to what your child might want to eat one evening, what game they want to play, where their rubbish goes.
Play games that help your child make tough choices
Life is full of tough decisions, but it doesn’t mean your child can’t grow to become used to these sorts of scenarios in the future.
A safe way to do this would be through games and activities that ensure your child’s decision won’t have a real world impact.
Many online games and board games will help your child understand how they can take a step back and decide for themselves.
Help your child with chores
Giving your child a small handful of age appropriate chores will give them a lot more confidence. A good place to start is learning to clean up after themselves.
Show them how they can do the same around the home and how you define a clean and happy home.
This is also great for helping a child’s confidence and independence.
