STEM is the acronym used for science, technology, engineering and maths. There are many things that you can do at home to explore STEM subjects with your young inventor at home. A prep school in Hampshire shares more.

Family budgeting
To help your child be on their way to becoming a mathematician, you can challenge your child when you’re out and about. Set them the task of working out your bill at a restaurant or working out how much more you need to spend at the supermarket to use your voucher. This is a fun way of getting your child to do some maths while getting to see the practical side of the subject.
Coding games
Who said that learning couldn’t be fun? To help your child improve their knowledge and skills of coding, many games are available to play online. Games such as Code Combat teach software programming basics and coding within the games themselves. You can only progress to the next level once you have demonstrated your knowledge. Other games include Code Monster which have interactive tutorials and Codemoji that focuses on web development.
Cooking
A great way to carry out science experiments at home is by cooking. There are so many lessons that can be taught from evaporation to the convection of heat when baking brownies. To demonstrate how convection currents work, create several batches of brownies, each at the same temperature but located on different shelves. The colour and texture of the brownie batches will determine which area of the oven gets the hottest. Spoiler – Closest to the fire, the bottom, should prove to have the least heat whereas the top should have the most. This is because of density that makes hot air rise and cool air sink.
