I’ve been a parent for about 4 and a half years now, and am constantly learning how to be the Mummy that my children need me to be. A lot of the time I’m just following my gut instincts, trusting that they will guide me in the right direction.
The rest of the time? I seem to be following my children’s lead. Watching to see where their interests lie, what their personalities are like, what they need from me. I’m very conscious of not wanting to push them in a direction they don’t want to go, and to let them explore the world, their interests and their capabilities in their own time.
So when I came across this quote it really resonated with me.
For me, it’s really important to let my children learn things and do things in their own time. I’ll show them things, of course, and encourage them to try and face new challenges, but I won’t push and I won’t force.
Surely doing that is just asking for resistance and resentment?

Popping over from #candidcuddles =) What a great quote! Dont’ push over the edge, just push far enough. Helps if you let them think it was their idea.

Haha, very good point about letting them think it was their idea to face their fears! x
What a beautiful thought provoking quote. And I totally agree with it. There’s a fine line between encouraging our children and pushing them and as parents it’s our role to find that line and respect it. Thanks for sharing x #candidcuddles
It really is a fine line isn’t it. Thanks for your lovely comment. x
I like this, I’ve only been a parent for 8 months and I do worry about how I will bring up my son to be a confident little person. This is one to keep in mind! #candidcuddles
I think as long as you listen to his needs and respect who he is as a person as he grows then you’ll both be fine! Sounds like you’re a great mum if you’re already worrying about these things! x
This is a really thought provoking quote. It’s a great reminder not to push little ones into things they aren’t ready for or are afraid to do. I think you are right on with the way you are raising your kids. Thanks so much for sharing your quote with #candidcuddles x
Thanks so much for your comment Becky! It’s a great quote isn’t it. x
Hmm, food for thought! I think sometimes we are guilty of minimising the fears of other…especially our children for fear that it may limit them in the long run when we should be helping them understand their fears so that they can work through them. Thank you for this quote! ‘#candidcuddles
It’s tricky isn’t it, because we want them to face their fears and not be limited by them, but I do love this quote and the message that we need to respect their fears and not force them to deal with them before they’re ready. x
