7 interesting facts about eyes that you might not know

Eyes are amazing little things, aren’t they? They let us see the world, connect with others, and communicate without saying a single word. But there’s so much more going on with them than you might realise. So let’s take a look at some fascinating eye facts that’ll make you appreciate them even more.

1. Eye colour is a lot more complicated than it seems. For years, scientists thought it was a simple genetic lottery, with brown eyes always trumping blue. Turns out, it’s not that simple at all. Eye colour is influenced by loads of different genes, meaning you could end up with an eye colour thanks to distant relatives, not just your parents. Speaking of eye colours, did you know only about 2% of the world has green eyes? TheraTears has written a great article all about the origins of eye colour, which is definitely worth checking out if you’re curious.

2. Your eyes are ridiculously good at picking up light. In fact, on a completely dark night, they can detect the flicker of a candle flame from 14 miles away. So, the next time someone says you’re not paying attention, just remind them how amazing your eyes are, even in the dark.

3. Here’s a fun one: the eye contains the fastest contracting muscle in your body. It can react in less than 1/100th of a second. That’s faster than you can even blink. Pretty impressive, right?

4. Ever seen someone with two different coloured eyes? That’s called heterochromia, and it’s incredibly rare – less than 1% of people have it. There are a few different types too. Complete heterochromia means one eye is a totally different colour from the other. Partial heterochromia is where part of one iris is a different colour. Then there’s central heterochromia, where the inner ring of the iris is a different colour from the outer bit. Sometimes it’s genetic, but it can also happen after an injury or because of certain medical conditions.

5. While the brain gets all the glory for being the most complex organ in the body, the eyes aren’t far behind. Each one has over two million working parts, and they’re connected to the brain by more than a million nerve fibres.

6. Did you know over 1 in 8 men are colour-blind? It’s much less common in women, but it’s still a lot more frequent than people think. So, if someone’s having a hard time matching their socks or figuring out if that light is green or red, they might not just be distracted – their eyes could be seeing things differently.

7. Here’s a cute fact to end on: newborn babies can’t actually produce tears when they cry. Their tear ducts aren’t fully developed yet, so even though they’ll cry plenty (as every parent knows), the real waterworks don’t kick in until they’re about six weeks old.

And there you have it – seven fascinating facts about eyes. So, next time you’re gazing into someone’s eyes or just checking yourself out in the mirror, take a moment to appreciate how incredible they really are! What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about eyes? Let me know – I’d love to hear!
