6 ways to make your home feel extra cosy this winter

I love getting out for a walk and a blast of fresh air at this time of year.

There’s something so lovely about bundling up in scarfs and gloves and going for a walk through the park or the woods.  And there’s something especially lovely about then coming back to a warm, cosy home.

If your house isn’t quite ready for the change in seasons, here are 6 things you can do to make it feel extra cosy this winter:

6 ways to make your home feel extra cosy this winter

1. Pile up the throws and blankets

Cover your sofas and chairs with gorgeous soft and warm throws and blankets, perfect for curling up on cold winter nights.

Go for hand-knitted blankets for warmth, and fluffy fleecy throws for a cosy tactile experience.  If you’re shopping online then you can get some great deals with voucher code sites like dealsdaddy.co.uk.

Add in some soft and squishy cushions too, and you’ll never want to leave the sofa.

2. Warm up your colour scheme

If you feel like taking on a bit of a winter project you could repaint the plain magnolia walls in your home with deep, rich colours like navy blue or emerald green.  Or go for something different like a warm exposed brick look with brick slips.

For more of a quick fix, use warmer colours in the accessories in your home and add a fluffy, deep pile rug to rooms with bare floors in a deep red or warm orange.

3. Soften the lighting

With the dark evenings drawing in we’ll all have the lights on more at home.

The thing with overhead lighting is that it can be quite harsh, and not so cosy.  So get a few table lamps and floor lamps and use those instead.

If you want to really create a cosy atmosphere then use twinkling fairy lights and candles as well.

4. Change up your bedding

If you haven’t already done it, now’s the time to change your light weight summer duvet for a heavier winter one.

While you’re at it, change your duvet cover and pillow cases for a warm jersey or brushed cotton set, and add an extra throw or blanket for the nights that it gets super cold.

5. Use scent

If you’re going to be lighting candles to create a cosy atmosphere, then make them scented ones to fill the house with delicious warm and wintry aromas.

I absolutely love gingerbread scented candles at this time of year.

If candles aren’t your thing then pop a few reed diffusers around the house instead.

6. Get cooking

Another way to fill the house with gorgeous smells is to get cooking.

At the weekends spend some time baking delicious biscuits and gingerbread men.  You don’t have to do anything too fancy, even simple chocolate biscuits will fill the house with a lovely chocolatey scent.

Then during the week put the ingredients for a sausage casserole or beef stew in the slow cooker before you head out to work.  You’ll come home to a house that smells amazing and a dinner all ready to be served.

So there you have it, six ways to make your home extra cosy this winter.
