Is 2024 the year to move house? Here’s what you need to assess

Deciding to move house can feel like a big deal. You’ll literally need to pick up your entire life and move it, not to mention the social impact of being in a new area or, of course, the financial aspect.

There are a number of things you need to keep in mind when making your decision. From assessing the current housing market to deciding how much room you have for added stress, here are some of the main things you might want to think about.

Assessing the housing market

One of the most important factors when it comes to working out when to move is the current state of the housing market. If you have any control over when you move, then it’s worth looking at whether now is a good time to move to the area you’re looking to move to.

As you’ll likely have noticed, the housing market is prone to intense fluctuation at the moment, and if things don’t look great at the moment, it could be worth holding off for a few months. Equally, if you spot a good deal, it could be worth taking the plunge.

Capacity for added stress

Moving house is notoriously stressful. While moving might be unavoidable, you can at least make sure you do it when you have enough capacity for some added stress in your life.

For example, if you’re exhausted from work and have a newborn child, now might not be the best moment. While moving services such as Bright Movers can make it a lot easier for you, it will still ultimately require a lot of energy.

If, on the other hand, you’re between jobs and just got back from a restful holiday, then maybe now would be a good moment to capitalise on that extra energy.

Impacts it will have on your life

If you’re moving somewhere else in the same city, moving house might not have such a big impact on your life. You’ll likely maintain contact with the same friends and stay working at the same job.

Should you decide to move across the country, or even to another country altogether, this could have far bigger impacts on your life.

You’ll need to think about whether you’re ready to engage with a whole new social circle, look for a new job, and just generally rebuild your life from the ground up. This can obviously be a wonderful experience to go through, but you need to be in the right state of mind to take it on.

Clearly, the decision as to whether 2024 is the year to move house is a highly personal one. Even if we look at housing trends, they differ so much across the country that it’s hard to give a single straightforward answer.

If you think now is the right time, and you have the energy and resources to move house, then that’s a good sign that this is your moment. It’s a big decision, but if you get it right, it can positively transform your life.
